The way he described the motel situation really reminded me of Shia LeBeouf's movie that was based off his childhood (it's called honey something I can't remember rn) would make a good "A24 esque" depressing comedy.

It’s good seeing an idol who never wanted kids decide to have kids and come to grips with themselves and their ideas as a result. It’s a constant push to be better for our children; but it gives me confidence as a young father.

Funny how Ryan mentions being embarrassed of the ticket. I was the opposite. When I was 5, we made a move to another state, and $ was tight for a while, and I was aware of it even at that age, but my parents refused to accept any help. I saw some kids at school with the free lunch tickets (theirs were green, and ours were like a reddish thing), and I asked my mom, like, why can't I just get those? She let me do it for a little while and then stopped it again, but I was like, "Dude, we can get breakfast and lunch for free. Let's do it!" I was jazzed by the idea, lol.

David's story about playing video games with his daughter really hit home for me. I remember playing one of those Lego games with my daughter and I got so frustrated with this stupid game I told my daughter we had to stop because I was getting too frustrated with the game. I think about that all the time and feel like a huge piece of shit.

I have a shit parent memory too that haunts me. My kid is about to be 13 and this happened when she was 5... We were decorating the tree and I was trying to micro manage what she was doing and after she went to bed, I took apart the whole thing and redid it. I was able to use the Elf of the shelf as my cover. "He" left a note saying he knocked over the tree and had to redo it.
I couldn't stop myself but I feel like a piece of shit whenever I think about it. I just told her a few months ago what i did. She didn't remember at all.
Parenting man, we just try our best not to screw them up.
      I bet you're a great parent.

You're not alone. The other day my family member mentioned how I talk to my children like adults. Even my toddlers. Its harder for some of us to let down our guards and be emotionally vulnerable. It doesn't mean that we dont love our children. Parent apologies are huge here..

Him explaining his parents sounds exactly like me and my ex. I was with him for years, and I’m so glad I didn’t stay in that relationship. I’m sure he would’ve done all the things his father did.
He was a pathological liar and so charming. Couldn’t keep a job, and nothing was ever his fault. And he would just disappear to different states, and then try to convince me that he told me he was going there beforehand.

I asked my parents what brought my grandparents here. It was an autopart manufacturer and an airforce training base
