I appreciate the effort put into the science of what the parts do, and what they mean. Thank you. It seems that very few people explain the why, and most only explain the how when talking about cooking stuff. Thumbs up.

i used a pressure cooker for the first time. i live alone and was so scared to use it and the manual for the cheap model i used was useless plus came with several spelling mistakes so i searched for videos to help me out and this by far has been the most helpful video. i put some beans that i had soaked overnight covered with 2 inches water and only added salt and some vegetable oil. i waited for 2 whistles then i turned the stove off after the second whistle and waited for it to natural release.about 20min for the whole process and took about 12 min for the pressure release. beans are cooked to perfection! thankyou very much🙏

I would use 1/4 of a white onion ( do not chop) and 3 garlic cloves. once beans are done fish out onion/garlic put in a blender with bean broth and a few of the boiled beans and liquefy it. add it back to your beans and mix that thoroughly for lots more flavor.

I think the purpose of the oil is to hold down the foam the beans create.

Enjoyed viewing the pressure cooker help-I'm using black beans in a Mirro-Matic that had belonged to my mother-in-law. I had all kinds of fun this summer using the cooker and mom eating up what I would cook. She past away a couple of months ago, but I still like to use my pressure cooker. Your video instruction was really great, because I felt like I was in the kitchen with you. Thank you

I use my Granny's pressure cooker often it is 1930s and its heavy as all get out but does the job even on my 1879 wood cook stove. I have a large family so I usually have to go for 3 lbs of beans at one time in that old thing at about 10 lbs pressure for an hour and half. Was thinking about getting a modern one like yours but its not big enough for all my kin. Much obliged for the video.

You helped me find out that I assembled my pressure cooker wrong... lol the manual didn't come with any instructions on how to properly put it together so in the end there was an extra piece - discovered that it was the valve that's supposed to seal the pot. No wonder the beans were cooking for 30 minutes already and the steam wouldn't go to the regulator... thank you for this!

My mother had one of those "old" type units. When I say old I mean back in the 50's.
She did not know about cleaning the dancing weight and some food got stuck in it and the emergency plug blew out and welll ..... we needed some sheet rock work in the kitchen ceiling !
For Christmas this year I got one of those Power Pressure Cookers XL and they work great. They are all automatic and it does not have a dancing weight on top. It some how keeps the steam in.
The food in a pressure cooker is a whole lot better than I remember. I have been using mine to make chili, soup, and stews.
Carrots and snap beans only take 8 minutes.
    Great video..... Thanks

      D. Hansel Have you seen my newer pressure cooking and slow cooking videos? Last April, Hubby gave me an Instant Pot for my birthday. It's one of my best friends in the kitchen. It's a pressure cooker, a slow cooker, a steamer and a yogurt maker. LOVE IT!

I just remember the old pressure my mother had back in the 50's. These new Power Pressure Cookers XL are great.
I am going to make some refried beans today. it is about 36 deg here in Houston and I saw a good recipe for that. I have been digging through our chest freezer to find stuff in it to cook. It is definitely soup, stew and chili weather...
      later....

Not sure if this was mentioned but when you mentioned adding the oil I hear it actually helps it where you don't acquire the froth/foam on the surface. I think it has something to do with surface tension. I'm making pintos tonight and I've seen your video before and have made beans in pressure cooker but just wanted a refresher hahaha..
I have that same presto 6qt pot that my mom got me, unfortunately I've only used it like 5 times in the last 2 years and am constantly looking for new meals to cook in it. I've done whole chicken, beans, artichoke and attempted pressure fried chicken with less than desirably skin and really oil logged.. Anyways cheers !!

Hi Michelle, you need to get your hands on the owner's manual for your pressure cooker. Google around or contact the manufacturer. The owner's manual has all the cooking charts and recipes you need to properly cook food in the pressure cooker. I've kept my all these years and I STILL refer to it because I can't possible remember how long each veggie or beans take to cook.

Hi, I loved your video. You had mentioned that you add oil to your pot but you didn't know why. Oil is added to the water in a pressure cooker to change the surface tension of the water so that it is less likely to foam up and come out the vent hole (long pipe thinggie).

Excellent video! I'm a vegetarian and I bought my pressure cooker ions ago in the hopes of making cheap bean dishes. Three years later, after I cleared the dust off of it and got angry at the manual- I searched and found your video. Very well done! I tried the recipe almost immediately. Results? I added way too much water (I think...I'm very very accident prone, so the threat of exploding stuff scared me to death), so the beans are cooked, but bland. You gave a great explanation that even I couldn't fudge up (well, not a lot anyways). I will definitely check out your other pressure cooker vids. Hoping there are vegetarian ones! Thanks a bunch!

Hi beans have 9 grams of fiber per 1 c & we need 21-30+ grams of fiber daily. When we get enough fiber a day it cuts down on the gas/musical fruit as SDR calls it.

@tomisnt I hear ya loud and clear. I tell my kids all the time about the importance of knowing how to grow their own food. We don't live in the country, but inside the city limits. We keep a small garden. When our favorite fruits and vegetables are in season, I go to canning and freezing. I figure if it's part of me, it has to rub off and become a part of them.

Wonderful video. I used to pressure cook everything. The best recipe I never quite got right though is pressure fried chicken. Have You ever done this one? Pressure fried chicken from my mother in laws hang out years ago was the only one and we used to travel over 2 states to get it for dinner. I would love to see that recipe. It was the best chicken I remember next to barbeque. I now have an electric pressure cooker. It is very pretty and does; yes it does work just like a pressure cooker for stoves.

can't tell if the time is 15 or 50 minutes, i know 15 will work, but may seem a little undone but 50 min. in a pressure cooker is a very long time, usually reserved for canning?
Almost no matter the food i always use an inside no handle pot on bottom seperator with water enough for time required, plus water for the food being cooked. preventsany burning, regards

    • @JillMcKeever
      @JillMcKeever  11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It's 50 minutes for dry pinto beans. If the beans are soaked in hot water for an hour, then the cooking time is only 25 minutes.
I'm not sure I follow your tip. You place a pot inside the cooker surrounded with water, and put the food inside the inner pot? How large is your pressure cooker? How much food is being cooked at one time?

  • @kcl060

Is something wrong with my pot? It's new and it never chattered. It just made a few huge steam releases almost like a train and I saw some foam come up. Did I not put enough oil in with my beans? I never saw any constant rocking or chattering. :o

I just bought a 6qrt presto and I am so nervous to use. We are vegan and beans are in our daily diet! We also don't use oil so is it necessary to use it? The directions say so to prevent foam but I just can't phantom adding oil to our meals. Please tell me I can get away without adding it! Great video though and I feel much more confident now. I will be using it tomorrow!

You're welcome, Salobrena. Now you know what to expect. From here on out, it's all about learning how different beans cook up. And for those times, when the beans don't cook up tender in the alloted time, just put the lid back on the cooker, get the pressure back up, and cook another 15 minutes or however long you think it would take to get them tender.

Doodles Pachesco I'm sorry I haven't replied sooner. Your question was hidden in another folder. When it comes to brown rice in the pressure cooker, I have consistent results with 2 cups rice, 2 1/2 cups water. Once the pressure is up, cook 20 minutes, remove cooker from heat source and set aside 10 minutes. Depending on the your pressure cooker (stove top or electric) release the remaining pressure as directed by the its manual.

I have cooked only with Basmati rice white and brown. I will give you both recipes. I take a steel bowl(flat/round) .take one cup of rice. rinse for 3 times. Drain all water. Now for white rice add 1 + 3/4 cups of water. For brown rice add 1+ 1/4 cup of water. Add 1 cup of water in the pressure cooker. Now let the steel bowl full of rice and water float on the water. close the lid and cook. Remember brown rice takes double the time to cook. cooked Rice comes out prefectly fine, Don't have to worry about rice sticky or stuck on the pan and easy to clean . This way you can cook batches of rice over and over again for a large group of people within no time.
I prefer not to cook direct on the pressure cooker pan to avoid cumbersome cleaning.

Hi Steven! I'm sorry I didn't respond sooner. These new YT channel changes have me confused. To answer your question, I'm a Presto gal all the way. My grandmother used Presto... they're built to last. I'm not completely sold on the electric cookers, mainly because they would take up valuable counter space. (I really use my pc several times a week.) However, my single aunt lives in a small place & LOVES her electric cooker bc it doesn't heat up her place. If you have a family, go with a 6-qt.

I laughed when she said her daughter does not like to see onions in her beans. I'm not a fan of cooked onions at all - they creep me the hell out - and refuse to eat anything with visible onions.
Glad there are others like me out there. :)

THANK YOU, Janet! My ease in front of the camera comes from being an only child growing up. I spent A LOT of time in front of the mirror keeping myself company. Is that too much information? ;D Now you think I'm a nut-job, right?

    @msgamerette86 What's the tip?
1 teaspoon of what per cup of rice? or is it a tablespoon?
What does the rice have to do with the beans?
I've never had a clogged gasket from cooking beans. I could see how foam from rice would clog a gasket or vent pipe. Then again, I've never tried cooking rice in a pressure cooker. Presto instructs us to place the water and rice in a boil wrapped with a tight fitting foil lid then the bowl is set inside the cooker. Water is then pour around the bowl.

I would like to also add that my wife and I are recently retired, fixed income, and all the baggage such stuff brings. We bought a small travel trailer to get away in. When we learned about the energy savings a pressure cooker provides we bought two of them. A larger GSI pressure cooker for the house and a smaller GSI pressure cooker for use in the trailer while on the road. We like to travel to remote areas that typically have no services. In such places we rely on propane from a couple of five gallon tanks. We like beans for all their goodness but cooking them for 2 to four hours is a huge propane consumption. The little GSI pressure cooker cuts that time down to less than 10 minutes if we presoak them overnight... easy enough to do no matter where we are. I am keen on the GSI pressure cookers because they are quite compact (no extended handles to deal with), light weight, and pack away quite nicely. GSI is an outdoor company that caters to backpackers, campers, and hikers. A Google search will find them... and no, I have no affiliation with GSI whatsoever. I just like the products they make.

My grandmother had a pressure cooker and her beans were our favorite meal. We were poor but to us, that was filet minion! I found a mirro pressure cooker and have already purchased/ordered 3 gaskets and it still will not pressure cook. I enjoyed your video, maybe you can give me some pointers? 😊

      Back in 2014, I upgraded to a 6-quart Instant Pot® DUO 7-in-1 Pressure Cooker. I own three Instant Pot®, a 3-quart, a 6-quart, and an 8-quart. I use the 3-qt and 8-qt several times a week.

ddd123, you can use that extra cooking liquid in your next chili dinner. Store the cooking liquid in a good freezer container and put it up in the freezer until you're ready to make chili.

    kcl060, I'm sorry I didn't respond quicker. I just found your questions.
What brand of cooker do you have? I know they are not all made the same. Do you still have the instruction manual? (Don't ever toss it away.)
