  • Hey guys, in today's video I'm planting tomatoes a little bit different. I give some basic facts about tomatoes and use some different amendments to fight my clay soil. I hope you enjoy it. Here's the link to my video on Nitrogen for tomatoes

Hi guys, I hope you enjoy the video. I didn't have much luck with tomatoes last year so I hope this helps. I've used fish before and I tried dry milk on one plant last year but I've never never tried planting in manure. Lets see how it goes. Thanks for watching.

Can’t wait to see how these plants are doing now! I’m hoping you’ll be having lots of mater sandwiches soon…

Well, that's the funny thing. I like making salsa and using tomatoes for sauces, and I absolutely love growing tomatoes, but I don't eat them on sandwiches or salad. I'm weird.

Hello Jon. It sounds logical. I don't see any reason it wouldn't work. I fortunately never have had to worry about clay soil. I have pretty much been in sandy soil which has it's own issues. I amend the heck out of it and get good results. I also at one time lived in Louisiana and that was a bear. Soil was always always border line wet. That was when my neighbor got me into raised beds. He was a native Cajun and a wealth of knowledge. Us gardeners seem to always help someone needing to get on a program that will work in a different region than they're used too.

I hope you're right. It does sound logical but I'm kind of worried about excessive nitrogen. I guess we'll find. I worked with a guy who gardened in sandy soil and it seemed like just as many problems as clay just a different kind of problem. It is nice when people are willing to share what they know. Not all people do that and I never understood why. Good to hear from you.

@@jonbussey5353 One strange thing I always did because I wanted better soil than I had, I would till deep and wide. I would amend it hard. That was just to give the roots nutrients down deep. When it came to tomatoes, I planted some where we had never planted them before. We, thru the season, didn't like them there so we didn't do it again. Two years later they grew on their own.

I have to agree about the tilling and amendments. I honestly believe you can't put too much organic matter in your garden. It's funny you mention that the other day I found some volunteer potatoes and what I think is a zucchini but the zucchini wasn't where I planted them last year. Just goes to show you never know what's going to happen.

@@jonbussey5353 Mother nature is funny that way. You never think about plants self germinating from past crops until it does. The tomatoes we got from the new past crop weren't as big, plentiful, or as good, but they were still usable and canned well when paired with new growth. Gardening is always a surprise. Good or bad.

Well I hope everyone has more good surprises than bad. Lol

If you don't have or want to waste your dry milk you can save up all your egg shells, you should wash them off before storing if you don't want that rotten egg smell. But its a nice alternative just bake them a little to make them more brittle and kill off any bad things that could be growing on it. Then grind them into a nice powder.

That's a good piece of advice. How much did you use for each plant? Thanks for the comment and watching.

@@jonbussey5353 kinda depends on the plant really and your soil conditions. I just add 1/4 cup at the bottom or mix with other fertilizer options, like manure or compost.

Thanks for answering. That's the great thing about organic gardening you get to use experience and make your own decisions. With chemical fertilizer all you have to do is read the back of the bag. Thanks again, it gives everyone a good starting point.

@@jonbussey5353 Yeah, when you kinda make your own compost and stuff you don't have to worry to much about over doing it as what is left over just goes to make the soil better in the long run and takes a while to degrade.

I couldn't agree more. I say it in my videos you can't add too much organic matter to your garden. Thanks for commenting and I hope you're garden is doing great.
