  • In this Beginning Beekeeping Series video, Doug the Bee Guy explains making pollen substitute the easy way. Doug shows how to mix dry sugar with AP23 pollen substitute and 1:1 sugar syrup to make a pollen sub dough for honeybees. Doug will discuss some additives that he adds when mixing pollen substitute.
This beekeeping for beginners series will cover all the topics needed to become a beginning beekeeper, basically a Beekeeping 101 course for new beekeepers.
Thanks so much for watching the video. My passion is to help beekeepers have an extraordinary journey in beekeeping by avoiding common pitfalls.

Humbly suggest placing the lid on the orange bucket; with a cut-out slot from edge to middle (just wide enough to passthru the shaft).

To keep from making too much of a mess, punch a hole in the lid of the bucket to stick your mixing paddle into. Then attach the paddle to your drill and secure the lid.
When you're finished, put a piece of tape on both sides of the lid to cover the hole.

I'm going to make a small batch of pollen substitute/patties from scratch this year and see how the bees like it. I know substitutes like Ultrabee are well regarded but it's also expensive. Worth a try making my own with a soy flour/sugar base; a $10 expense vs. $100. Anyone else here make their own?

In the future to prevent the spinning bucket problem, I'd suggest putting a sheet of that shelf liner (the grippy nonskid stuff) under it for a bit more friction, I use that stuff everywhere from under cutting boards while kneading dough and table cloths to jar lid opener... Thnks for this series, I'm learning a lot :)

another way is an old kitchen tip. lay a damp towel down and place the bucket/bowl on it. The moisture provides enough friction to keep the container from spinning.

Hello ,have a question about taking bee pollen. On many places I read it is good not to take pollen continually but with pauses let say: 3 months taking and 1 month pause, then again 3 months taking then 1 month pause. What is your stance on that? Is this correct or it can be taken everyday all year round ? What problem it causes if it is taken constantly/uninterrupted?

With regards to preventing 'interrupt of the brood laying' how often would you have to have this stuff out? 1/week, 2/month, etc?

Hi Doug, I've been binging your videos and it's all very interesting stuff. How quickly do you go through syrup and patty dough, and how long do both of those things keep? For someone with only a few hives, would it be better to make smaller batches, or would a batch of this size keep long enough to use it?

Thanks for the great question. If you have a couple of hives just make small batches. They both last for 3 weeks or so if you don't contaminate them with fungus and yeast. Then they will start to ferment.

Is the AP23 organic? I would never use veg oil. It's a saturated fat.

Hey Mark thanks so much for commenting and watching. I try and keep about 50 of the double nucleus colonies going each year for honey production and create another 20 to 40 for overwintering depending on time and weather.
