Iraq Christians: Catholics and Muslims find harmony in Mangesh

  • Hundreds of thousands of Christians have left Iraq, driven out by war, poverty and persecution.
    Many of those who remain behind feel bitter and abandoned. But in the semi-autonomous Kurdish region in the north of the country, Christians live in harmony with other religious communities.
    Al Jazeera's Mahmoud Abdelwahed reports from Mangesh in northern Iraq.

    This is an Assyrian village. Kurds have moved in to this village afterwards!

      What a way to add to that harmony my friend, accuse the Kurds of every problem Assyrians face. Assyrians have left because there is nothing for them to do in Iraq. Even more Kurds are leaving Iraq to go and live abroad. It’s the situation of the whole country.
      But sure, go ahead and blame Kurds and live your fantasy of victimhood

    • @VanWilshere2134
      @VanWilshere2134 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@Spinosaurus44 The comparison between Assyrians and Kurds leaving isn't even close. 90% of Assyrians have left, so as a % it's a massive amount and more than Kurds or anyone else. It's hard to find any country or region that has had such a large exodus of a specific people leave their region.
      Kurds have their own region, Assyrians don't have anything to govern with.

    • @Spinosaurus44
      @Spinosaurus44 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@VanWilshere2134 sure the ratio of Assyrians leaving vs staying might be higher than the ratio for Kurds, but you basically blamed the Kurds for Assyrians leaving their hometowns, which makes no sense! The first wave of Assyrian migrations started during the Kurdish-Iraqi conflict, and continued all the way through Saddam’s rain in the Iraqi-Iran War. Then in 2010’s ISIS was the cause of another huge wave of Assyrian migration. Kurds weren’t responsible for any of that!
      Sure, I am not denying that the KDP has been known to harass Assyrians, and to have assassinated Assyrian figures who were trying to take the side of the Iraqi Army over the peshmarga during the early Kurdish-Iraqi conflict, but it makes no sense to blame every misfortune that your people face on us Kurds.
      The main contributor to Assyrians leaving if you ask me is the current economical situation in Iraq and Kurdistan as a whole, followed by safety + discrimination concerns with them being Christian in a 99% Muslim country.
      I know you’d rather have Northern Iraq be called Assyria instead of Kurdistan, trust me I know and I understand. I know that there were even Assyrian peshmarga who shed their blood for the independence of that land, but the problem is there are too few Assyrians remaining in the Assyrian homeland in comparison to us Kurds who are still the majority in Kurdistan. I wouldn’t mind you governing yourselves as a nation at all and I would actually support you, but both you and us are currently nothing but pawns in the dirty political games. Which is quite unfortunate for both sides.

      Iraq was secular from 1933 to early 1990's. Following the first gulf war in 1991, Saddam hussein turned Iraq into an islamic country with islam as the state religion to get support from the rest of muslim world against USA.
      But Following more than a decade long civil war and sectarian violence (2003 to 2017), Majority of the Iraqis, specially the youth are strongly in favor of secularism again. A recent study has shown the almost 87% of Iraqi youth want some short of secularism while only 3% want a theocracy.
