      She didn't pay for it though. While it's messed up, isn't it more messed up we accepted this behavior in our society, in fact it's the norm. You can shame all you want but we all contributed to her eviction and society. Because we allow business to thrive in monopolistic control. We can't pass up any good deal in the US.
      Like TH-cam, we're all on here cause creators and viewers said hey this is free and cheap. But now we've witnessed the consolidation of technological power and infrastructure under a few major corporations, notably Google. This consolidation has led to the demise of numerous competitors and alternative platforms. Why cause internet free and cheap, as we see TH-cam force more and more ads cause where you're going to run to now? Nowhere left to run. But hey it was free right?? Now creators complain and viewers alike but we both contributed to this, blame the other half but take some blame at yourself. Not thinking about how every aspect of your life dominos into practices like this. Like we mix recycling in one bin, kinda insane, you think it goes in the magic "recycle sorter machine"? But convenience right? Out of sight out of mind. Until China said they didn't want our trash anymore? Remember when the news freaked out? Oh wait another country accepted nevermind forget the unsustainable model.
      Similarly look at The suburban dream, with its emphasis on single-family homes and reliance on personal vehicles, represents another facet of these intertwined decisions. While appealing for its promise of privacy and space, this model has proven unsustainable as it does not scale with population growth, leading to inflated housing prices and increased living costs. Yet, it's crucial to acknowledge our collective role in these developments. Consumer choices, whether it's the embrace of TH-cam, the purchase of single-family homes, or the acceptance of car dependency. These have all fed into systems that prioritize short-term convenience and profit over long-term sustainability and equity.
      In the eviction of an individual today can be seen as a culmination of decades of collective decisions, where convenience, corporate interests, and unsustainable urban and societal models have converged to create a reality where housing is not guaranteed, but a privilege increasingly difficult to secure.
      But while companies and businessmen make those decisions, we as the public have bought into them. Giving tips? Giving homeless money of your pocket? Buying a car? What choice do I have? You ask.
      That right there is what societal mindset is. You feel regardless what you do, you won't impact because society forces you participate in one way or another. Those who blow it off simply kick the problem down to the next generation. Alternatively the up hill battle gets tougher and tougher. Don't get a car? Well enjoy poor public transportation (which car industry helped destroy). What medicaid to die affordably? Well enjoy the government taking every remaining penny you have left so that you leave your descendants with nothing.

      @@KOSAMAGAMES professional yapper 😂

    • @KOSAMAGAMES
      @KOSAMAGAMES 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Scythe_Voltage well I've had this conversation tons of times. Especially when it comes to Los Angeles.
      There are essentially two groups of people here, each facing distinct challenges. First, there are those who seem unable or unwilling to grasp the complexities of the situation. They're often so deeply entrenched in the ideals of the American Dream that they'll go to great lengths to pursue it, even if it means turning a blind eye to the flaws in our system or relocating to a new city. However, they soon find themselves confronted with the same issues they sought to escape. As cities expand, many of the systems we've come to accept as "normal" simply fail to scale effectively. Coupled with exorbitant healthcare costs, this perpetuates a cycle wherein individuals struggle to accumulate wealth, and even if they manage to do so, government policies can quickly deplete their assets, leaving little for future generations.
      Then there's the second group, which likely encompasses most of those who resonated with my comment. We understand the shortcomings of the system but feel trapped by the lack of viable alternatives. Refusing to buy a car, for instance, means relying on a flawed transportation system that puts us at a significant disadvantage. Similarly, forgoing homeownership means missing out on potential investments and financial stability. It's a sobering reality, and one that prompts the question: will anything truly change? I don't think so.
      Partially because "professional yapper", but also people who can't even understand their local government system. Is that by design? who knows.

    • @tommys231
      @tommys231 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +53

      No, the reason why housing is so expensive is because of rent control. Economists almost universally agree that rent control reduces the number of rental units. This here is a perfect example. Because of rent control, the landlord is not able to raise rents to a level where he can at least break even. As a result, the landlord would rather remove the property from the rental market than continue to lose money. Less supply means higher prices, this is basic economics.

      That simple figure is why my dad fought so hard from entering into one recently when he had a recent hospitalization due to a really bad pneumonia. Because of the time spent in ICU and in hospital bed he was having issues walking, so we had no choice but to look for assistance for rehab via at the nursing facility because my mom and I didn't have enough to have him rehab from our tiny house. He worked really hard to get to a point where he could push to leave. While the conditions at his nursing home were better than plenty I've seen, I can definitely understand why he hated his time there. While there were some working through rehab, there were many other patients bedridden and near death. I recall at least 3 that were removed within the 3 week period he stayed in the home that died in their beds. It was depressing.

      I agree. At 94 years old, she should have had ample time to buy something that was hers. Even if it was a small trailor or something that she could call her own. When it comes to renting, you are never secure. You don't own that property and they can do what they want when they want to. No living space is 100% secure, but when it comes to renting, that is very wishy washy on how long you really will be there. It's amazing that someone 30 or 40 years ago didn't come in and buy all of that just to put something else in. She's been lucky cause most places you rent come in go in a matter of years.

Being under the age of 65 and fairly healthy, I got the minimum to time allotted to move and did so. The rest got the full year. My unit went on the public market for about a month then was pulled. My apartment was sold under the rader I think around Thanksgiving and the rest of the tenants luckily got their evictions reversed. The gal that lived above me was in her mid to late 90s, I believe. I am happy that they don't have to move but I am not happy they have to live under this landlord still since she already put them through so much within the first year of grabbing the property.
    Some additional notes about the building.
    1920's building.
    Total rent monthly coming from the building was barely $6k.
    Fixes to the building in the last 10 years:
    - Replacing the HVAC. Total overhaul for all units.
    - Unit across from us needed new sheetrock in the entire unit. They lived there for at least 3 decades without major renovations.
    - Sewerline from apartment to street replaced a few years ago.
    - Building was repainted in like 2012.
    Not sure if that helps at all to the situation, but extra details I suppose.

While it's certainly true that in many cases, renters who are dealing with drug addiction (including alcoholism ofc) can be very unreliable or disruptive, I'm positive that there are plenty of drug addicts who are perfectly rule-abiding tenants who pay rent on time and don't bother their neighbors, in fact, I know of several. It really depends on the severity of their addiction and if the tenant has access to resources (like outpatient rehab or regular counselling) they need in order to keep their addiction manageable & imperceptible to their neighbors and building owners.

U r more than welcome to fund addicts but not on the majorities dime. U just talk about compassion and scold people who speak the truth, yet u do nothing about it yourself. He needs to abide by that rent control and write off the tenants as a biz loss each year. They're legal but they're NOT HUMANE!
    My building is undergoing the exact same problem with our Property Management company.
    They're Reno-victing local area residents so they can do cosmetic renovations (not structural or necessary) so they can target Marquette University students who's families will pay the nearly DOUBLE rents in the renovated units so their students can have housing near their school.
    This means lower-income, working-class, local area residents are being forced out of affordable housing.
    It's a disgusting practice!

People need 2 3 jobs to pay these rents. I'm an owner & landlord but I don't like the 💩 I see happening to others. @@pearlperlitavenegas2023.. These kind of laws favouring the renters and the difficulty in evicting renters is the reason why no one is investing their money to construct affordable rental houses.. Due to these laws, no one wants to invest his money to construct new houses to give for rent.. Even people who already own vacant residential land are not ready to invest their money to construct new houses to give for rent,, because they are afraid that the renters will not vacate.. This leads to shortage of houses available for rent. And increases the rent of existing houses because demand is more than supply. No one is constructing new affordable houses to give for rent, due to these laws.

The property directly across the street charges $3800/month for a 900 square foot 2b/1ba unit. Those four renters are paying less than that combined.

    Update (3/7/24, 9:13 am): The management of a Mission District apartment building has sent SFist a statement saying they will not evict 94-year-old Helen Byrne from her apartment. "While the initial decision to purchase a rental property was made with the intention of investment, the goals for this property have since changed - with a focus on people over profits. Upon deep reflection of the situation, we have made the decision to allow the residents of 3050-3058 Cesar Chavez Street to stay," manager Daniel Mytels said in the statement.
    "When we learned of 94-year-old Helen Byrne’s long history in this building and saw her new health condition and felt her deep community there, we decided we had to commit to keeping Ms. Byrne and the other residents in their homes," the statement adds. "In the coming weeks, we will work out the specific details and next steps regarding the future of this property and we will make every effort to ensure that residents can stay in their homes long-term.

    Same thing happened to me. The new owner tried many ways to empty our 6 unit building, with the exception of a buy out. Finally he used the Ellis Act and he was successful. 2 tenants had cancer, 2 more were teachers, the others had lived there over 30 years and were seniors. We tried to fight it, but with all the Tenant Groups, our district supervisor , etc. it was fruitless. My family also owned an apartment house with tenants who had lived there a long time. They never thought of eviction. When a tenant finally moved out, they were able to raise the rent to market rates. You have a responsibility being a landlord and if you expect to make a huge profit disrupting people lives, this is NOT the investment for you.
