She didn't pay for it though. While it's messed up, isn't it more messed up we accepted this behavior in our society, in fact it's the norm. You can shame all you want but we all contributed to her eviction and society. Because we allow business to thrive in monopolistic control. We can't pass up any good deal in the US. Like TH-cam, we're all on here cause creators and viewers said hey this is free and cheap. But now we've witnessed the consolidation of technological power and infrastructure under a few major corporations, notably Google. This consolidation has led to the demise of numerous competitors and alternative platforms. Why cause internet free and cheap, as we see TH-cam force more and more ads cause where you're going to run to now? Nowhere left to run. But hey it was free right?? Now creators complain and viewers alike but we both contributed to this, blame the other half but take some blame at yourself. Not thinking about how every aspect of your life dominos into practices like this. Like we mix recycling in one bin, kinda insane, you think it goes in the magic "recycle sorter machine"? But convenience right? Out of sight out of mind. Until China said they didn't want our trash anymore? Remember when the news freaked out? Oh wait another country accepted nevermind forget the unsustainable model. Similarly look at The suburban dream, with its emphasis on single-family homes and reliance on personal vehicles, represents another facet of these intertwined decisions. While appealing for its promise of privacy and space, this model has proven unsustainable as it does not scale with population growth, leading to inflated housing prices and increased living costs. Yet, it's crucial to acknowledge our collective role in these developments. Consumer choices, whether it's the embrace of TH-cam, the purchase of single-family homes, or the acceptance of car dependency. These have all fed into systems that prioritize short-term convenience and profit over long-term sustainability and equity. In the eviction of an individual today can be seen as a culmination of decades of collective decisions, where convenience, corporate interests, and unsustainable urban and societal models have converged to create a reality where housing is not guaranteed, but a privilege increasingly difficult to secure. But while companies and businessmen make those decisions, we as the public have bought into them. Giving tips? Giving homeless money of your pocket? Buying a car? What choice do I have? You ask. That right there is what societal mindset is. You feel regardless what you do, you won't impact because society forces you participate in one way or another. Those who blow it off simply kick the problem down to the next generation. Alternatively the up hill battle gets tougher and tougher. Don't get a car? Well enjoy poor public transportation (which car industry helped destroy). What medicaid to die affordably? Well enjoy the government taking every remaining penny you have left so that you leave your descendants with nothing.
@@Scythe_Voltage well I've had this conversation tons of times. Especially when it comes to Los Angeles. There are essentially two groups of people here, each facing distinct challenges. First, there are those who seem unable or unwilling to grasp the complexities of the situation. They're often so deeply entrenched in the ideals of the American Dream that they'll go to great lengths to pursue it, even if it means turning a blind eye to the flaws in our system or relocating to a new city. However, they soon find themselves confronted with the same issues they sought to escape. As cities expand, many of the systems we've come to accept as "normal" simply fail to scale effectively. Coupled with exorbitant healthcare costs, this perpetuates a cycle wherein individuals struggle to accumulate wealth, and even if they manage to do so, government policies can quickly deplete their assets, leaving little for future generations. Then there's the second group, which likely encompasses most of those who resonated with my comment. We understand the shortcomings of the system but feel trapped by the lack of viable alternatives. Refusing to buy a car, for instance, means relying on a flawed transportation system that puts us at a significant disadvantage. Similarly, forgoing homeownership means missing out on potential investments and financial stability. It's a sobering reality, and one that prompts the question: will anything truly change? I don't think so. Partially because "professional yapper", but also people who can't even understand their local government system. Is that by design? who knows.

So they bought a building knowing it had rent controlled units, for the express purpose of evicting them and selling the building for a profit. Sounds like a contributing factor on why housing is so expensive.
No, the reason why housing is so expensive is because of rent control. Economists almost universally agree that rent control reduces the number of rental units. This here is a perfect example. Because of rent control, the landlord is not able to raise rents to a level where he can at least break even. As a result, the landlord would rather remove the property from the rental market than continue to lose money. Less supply means higher prices, this is basic economics.

That simple figure is why my dad fought so hard from entering into one recently when he had a recent hospitalization due to a really bad pneumonia. Because of the time spent in ICU and in hospital bed he was having issues walking, so we had no choice but to look for assistance for rehab via at the nursing facility because my mom and I didn't have enough to have him rehab from our tiny house. He worked really hard to get to a point where he could push to leave. I agree. At 94 years old, she should have had ample time to buy something that was hers. Even if it was a small trailor or something that she could call her own. When it comes to renting, you are never secure. You don't own that property and they can do what they want when they want to. No living space is 100% secure, but when it comes to renting, that is very wishy washy on how long you really will be there. Literally had this a little over a year ago in the Richmond District. Building of elderly, retired, various ailments.. and myself. It was a 4 unit building. We were offered a measly buyout. Did not accept and the landlord's lawyer said that was fine that he was instructed to Ellis Act the bunch anyway as they wanted to make it into a TIC. Being under the age of 65 and fairly healthy, I got the minimum to time allotted to move and did so. The rest got the full year. My unit went on the public market for about a month then was pulled. My apartment was sold under the rader I think around Thanksgiving and the rest of the tenants luckily got their evictions reversed. The gal that lived above me was in her mid to late 90s, I believe. I am happy that they don't have to move but I am not happy they have to live under this landlord still since she already put them through so much within the first year of grabbing the property. Some additional notes about the building. 1920's building. Total rent monthly coming from the building was barely $6k. Fixes to the building in the last 10 years: - Replacing the HVAC. Total overhaul for all units. - Unit across from us needed new sheetrock in the entire unit. They lived there for at least 3 decades without major renovations. - Sewerline from apartment to street replaced a few years ago. - Building was repainted in like 2012. Not sure if that helps at all to the situation, but extra details I suppose.

"Mytle feels bad about the tenants being kicked out" Really? You knew what you were getting into and eviting them was all part of the plan from the get go. You are going to hell.
My mom and sister are being evicted. They been there for almost 40 year's. The unit was sold and new management will remodel and raise ro higher rent. Now to get a new place is a burden because rent is so high for retirement income. Like $1800. I know other places are higher but this is for what can be afford. Hope she doesn't get evicted and all those who are struggling same story.

Nursing homes can cost $3000 - $10,000+ PER MONTH. San Francisco is probably on the expensive end at about $5000+. So really, Helen will have no where to go unless her insurance covers it. You are right about the $10,000. Assisted living is $5000-$$8,000. She is beyond the assisted living being bedridden. It would be $10,000 to $12,000 or more in the area.
That's a problem with San Francisco. The more they try to make housing affordable the more they end up making it cost most. Liberals simply don't understand how an economy works.
I understand both sides. But how do you keep running the building if the current rent doesn't cover operating expenses/profit. People don't buy rental property without intent of making a profit.
Exactly. I feel for the tenants. If I was a millionaire celebrity this is the type of situation I’d sink my money into. Not designer shoes and handbags. Helping people. But the landlord should not be forced to lose money every month. People need to be charitable with their OWN things. Not volunteer charity with the things of others.
Biz is biz to a certain point. This is one of those special situations where u can't remove someone after 80y of living in the same place who is bedridden. It's not like these tenants are drug addicts. These are genuine, pure hearted people. This is just wrong and the city needs to do something.
I agree but they will only allow her to stay because it hurts their reputation. These "investors" building "luxury" units don't care that the local income can't support what they are charging
I agree with u, except when you implied that people struggling with addiction are somehow not genuine, pure hearted people. Substance abuse is a disease, I've met addicts who are the most generous, kindest, most empathetic ppl I've ever known, who would literally give u the shirt off their back or be willing to suffer through the physical hell of withdrawal just to make sure that u have enough change to get yourself a meal. While it's certainly true that in many cases, renters who are dealing with drug addiction (including alcoholism ofc) can be very unreliable or disruptive, I'm positive that there are plenty of drug addicts who are perfectly rule-abiding tenants who pay rent on time and don't bother their neighbors, in fact, I know of several. It really depends on the severity of their addiction and if the tenant has access to resources (like outpatient rehab or regular counselling) they need in order to keep their addiction manageable & imperceptible to their neighbors and building owners.
@ElleLillian the only addicts I see are the ones breaking in houses, vandalizing property, freeways, littering everywhere and not cleaning up, smashing car windows, burning encampment, stealing cars, defecating in the streets, etc. Shall I continue bc I have a long laundry list... we pour money into housing "homeless" when it is a lost cause as over 80 pcnt relapse and cycles all over again.. that money should be used for our public schools, first responders and teacher pay, fixing the roads. U r more than welcome to fund addicts but not on the majorities dime. U just talk about compassion and scold people who speak the truth, yet u do nothing about it yourself. Why don't u put ur money where your mouth is and house homeless addicts yourself so we don't have to look at their filth
I live in Montreal Quebec and a law has recently passed over here that if you are 70 up and have lived in your dwelling for at least ten years they can't kick you out. They would have to buy you out.
To be exact, there are many exceptions to that protection under article 1959.1 of the Civil code of Quebec, it does not apply to all 70+ tenants. For exemple, if the owner is also 70 years old +, the tenant can be kicked out. Also, for that protection to apply, the 70+ tenant must not earn above the bare minimum income which is determined by law.

I understand that business is business, ppl don't invest money to lose it, but the new owner knew there were ppl living there under rent control before he signed on the dotted line to buy it. He needs to abide by that rent control and write off the tenants as a biz loss each year. These ppl have have abided by their contract, they have not trashed the place, they pay their rent, they care for one another, you couldn't ask for better stewards of the place as far as tenants go
The report explains that the landlord has a legal right to evict the tenants if they keep the property off the rental market for at least 5 years thereafter.
Think about this, if the apt was not rent controlled, there would be no reason to evict good long term tenants. Still think that the govt telling you how much you can charge for rent is a good thing?
These are called "Reno-victions" and they're happening ALL over the country! They're legal but they're NOT HUMANE! My building is undergoing the exact same problem with our Property Management company. They're Reno-victing local area residents so they can do cosmetic renovations (not structural or necessary) so they can target Marquette University students who's families will pay the nearly DOUBLE rents in the renovated units so their students can have housing near their school. This means lower-income, working-class, local area residents are being forced out of affordable housing. It's a disgusting practice!
same 💩 in DallasTX except here they mostly tear down what used to be functional affordable Apts houses & build "luxury" expensive units WORKING CLASS LOWER MIDDLE CLASS have NO WHERE TO live. People need 2 3 jobs to pay these rents. I'm an owner & landlord but I don't like the 💩 I see happening to others. I grew up poor in an affordable apartment or my family would have been on the street. Every city should have affordable housing available to people.
Gentrification, Zoning and moral laws shut down the nickel a bed flophouse, men's working hotels, and women's boarding houses. San Francisco should go back the way it was in the 1870s. Or even the 1970s.
@@pearlperlitavenegas2023.. These kind of laws favouring the renters and the difficulty in evicting renters is the reason why no one is investing their money to construct affordable rental houses.. Due to these laws, no one wants to invest his money to construct new houses to give for rent.. Even people who already own vacant residential land are not ready to invest their money to construct new houses to give for rent,, because they are afraid that the renters will not vacate.. This leads to shortage of houses available for rent. And increases the rent of existing houses because demand is more than supply. No one is constructing new affordable houses to give for rent, due to these laws.
I pay $101 a month in rent for an 800 square foot 1 bed/1 bath furnished kitchen/washer and dryer apartment in the SOMA part of San Francisco (actually, it rents for $2930 a month, but Section 8 pays the difference). If she was on Section 8, then Section 8 could pay market rate while she'd end up paying very little.
That’s what they forgot to mention. They want to keep their low priced apartment that doesn’t match reality’s cost of living in today’s market. I wouldn’t want to keep renting to you for a fraction of what I could get from someone else either. 🎉
This is where the rental model breaks down. This lady is now going to be a cost to the California taxpayers so that a private landlord can make millions of dollars in profits .
He forgets that the millions he seeks is *speculative* as San Francisco has been emptying out and vacancies are at an all-time high. I wouldn’t be holding my breath if I were him🤡
If you did even basic math, you'd work out that the landlord is losing about $5,000 per month on this property. Rent controls that allow prices to be locked in for decades aren't reasonable. The property directly across the street charges $3800/month for a 900 square foot 2b/1ba unit. Those four renters are paying less than that combined.
Update (3/7/24, 9:13 am): The management of a Mission District apartment building has sent SFist a statement saying they will not evict 94-year-old Helen Byrne from her apartment. "While the initial decision to purchase a rental property was made with the intention of investment, the goals for this property have since changed - with a focus on people over profits. Upon deep reflection of the situation, we have made the decision to allow the residents of 3050-3058 Cesar Chavez Street to stay," manager Daniel Mytels said in the statement. "When we learned of 94-year-old Helen Byrne’s long history in this building and saw her new health condition and felt her deep community there, we decided we had to commit to keeping Ms. Byrne and the other residents in their homes," the statement adds. "In the coming weeks, we will work out the specific details and next steps regarding the future of this property and we will make every effort to ensure that residents can stay in their homes long-term.
They say that now for the media but there's a pretty good chance they will either proceed with the eviction or try again literally a year from now with less attention - and faster.

Did someone put a gun to your head? There are many other places you can live ya know. I moved and sold my house in SF 4 years ago. Timed it perfectly. Rent was never cheap in SF.
I agree it doesn't. As a property owner in SF with a 4 unit, our rent increases are constrained due to rent control. Our expenses is going up yearly and it is hard not to raise rents. Yes its sad, but what about the property owners who are taking all the risks.
Sounds like the previous owner was going bankrupt ... When the owner can't pay mortgage or taxes, the building will be foreclosed, and people will get kicked out anyway. It's just a matter of time. @@grumpyoldlady_rants
If the rents made owning the building "unfeasible", then he shouldn't have bought it in the first place. This is everything that's wrong with unregulated capitalism, in microcosm.
How is the Ellis Act applied here? The landlord has already stated intentions to rerent, not take the apartment building off the rental market for 5 years. What they are doing is illegal.
They also said they’re willing to put it on the market. So, once those tenants are out, they can calculate the future rent at market value, which increases the property value of the building.
Mrs. Helen look great at her age, she looks like 60 years old. No one deserves be in this situation in they're elderly age, is really sad. My prayers for this sweet and beautiful lady. My heart is broken 😢
Why has she been renting for all those years? She has literally already paid the entire mortgage for the previous owners. She could have paid off a 30 year mortgage of her own ling ago. And housing was a lot more affordable 50+ years ago. Wtf?
(as a rent control renter myself) I think when your a renter you always have to ask yourself , if this renting situation changes what is my plan B, and plan C? , life isn't forever and forever is not an option, life changes,(earthquake, fire etc) this is an example- just my thought
@@PhilMoskowitz Don't pull that "personal responsibility" crap. This is about greed and the insanity that society has allowed real estate to become. No, I am not a liberal---they make me want to vomit. But, you "personal responsibility" types make me just as sick.
Same thing happened to me. The new owner tried many ways to empty our 6 unit building, with the exception of a buy out. Finally he used the Ellis Act and he was successful. 2 tenants had cancer, 2 more were teachers, the others had lived there over 30 years and were seniors. We tried to fight it, but with all the Tenant Groups, our district supervisor , etc. it was fruitless. My family also owned an apartment house with tenants who had lived there a long time. They never thought of eviction. When a tenant finally moved out, they were able to raise the rent to market rates. You have a responsibility being a landlord and if you expect to make a huge profit disrupting people lives, this is NOT the investment for you.
They won't be able to find anything they can afford in San Francisco. At least Helen and her caregiver might find a two-bedroom place some distance away, but even that will be expensive. When you're 94, that kind of change is a death sentence.
This is the problem with greed and humanity just not caring about each other just we can or can't get out of them . This is a damn Shame my heart breaks for her .
I'm pretty sure they find out what the deal is... these aren't naive first time owners, they are investment corporations who buy up properties and businesses.
Squatters can't be evicted but lawabiding citizens can be evicted.
Its ridiculous. The nerve of the owner to complain about operating costs, I bet my life he doesn’t do shit to the building and he’s getting huge tax breaks for owning a rent-controlled building.
For real , that’s so freakin unfair!! That shows you how much of a joke the legal system is , so flawed and ridiculous!!

80 years paying rent, she probably bought the house twice by that point
Probably more.
@@KOSAMAGAMES professional yapper 😂
Is that by design? who knows.
@@KOSAMAGAMES there’s people that live in a spotless house and clean twice a day, and people that live in filth and couldn’t care less, there’s people that live below their means to save for a house, and people that blow money like it’s a video game. So they bought a building knowing it had rent controlled units, for the express purpose of evicting them and selling the building for a profit.
Sounds like a contributing factor on why housing is so expensive.
It sounds like it should be a crime.
Yes and these are people sitting on their ass all day extracting from the middle class. I say they need to get a real job and quit hurting our citizens.

Hopefully Nancy Pelosi, a CATHOLIC will put down her drink and use her white privilege to help her elder.
While the conditions at his nursing home were better than plenty I've seen, I can definitely understand why he hated his time there. While there were some working through rehab, there were many other patients bedridden and near death. I recall at least 3 that were removed within the 3 week period he stayed in the home that died in their beds. It was depressing.
They're elderly, not stupid. They know full well the old age homes are just short stop overs and the path to death. Many just want to get on with it.

Either she’s not “low income”. Or that’s why she’s leaving. Couldn’t imagine renting for 80 years. She could’ve bought the place more times over then I could count.

Fixes to the building in the last 10 years:
- Replacing the HVAC.
Fuck this money grab ! As if it’s not already expensive as shit to live there

This world is upside down
I agree with u, except when you implied that people struggling with addiction are somehow not genuine, pure hearted people.

Thank you. I have seen this happen over and over again with senior residents of many years being ousted.
"People aren't just numbers to be discarded."
THE RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH
You should buy it and lower the rent for people
Did someone put a gun to your head? There are many other places you can live ya know. I moved and sold my house in SF 4 years ago. Timed it perfectly. Rent was never cheap in SF.
So is buying a home/condo
@drflat9223 she didn't say she lived there, she just said the rent was too high
@@craigime same. if you think it's too high, don't live there. simple.
How does $3,800 a month even cover the property tax, insurance, and maintenance on that building??
Insurance is ridiculous in California
It probably doesn’t but they knew when they bought the building that it was rent controlled.
The tenants are paying $3800/month now…was that per person or all together? Then he said he can get $2500-3000k more per month?
If the rents made owning the building "unfeasible", then he shouldn't have bought it in the first place. This is everything that's wrong with unregulated capitalism, in microcosm.
It's not just the rent but the neighborhood, the sense of community.
Absolutely unadulterated greed. I can't believe we live in a country that allows people to be treated this way.
Only in America. This doesn't happen in Europe.
We live in the only country on earth that despises its own citizens
Leave her alone.
New Owners leave her alone
She needs her home... she been there all her life ❤
Yes. Leave her alone.
How about we evict the investors?
On est comme ca les étrangers. On est humains mieux eduquer MENTALEMENT SURTOUT SENTIMENTALE. NON PAS POUR DES ECUS.
How about we go back to the only people who have rights and get a vote are, those who own property?
Why has she been renting for all those years? She has literally already paid the entire mortgage for the previous owners. She could have paid off a 30 year mortgage of her own ling ago. And housing was a lot more affordable 50+ years ago. Wtf?
(as a rent control renter myself) I think when your a renter you always have to ask yourself , if this renting situation changes what is my plan B, and plan C? , life isn't forever and forever is not an option, life changes,(earthquake, fire etc) this is an example- just my thought
Bingo.
But that's personal responsibility which liberals don't believe in.
Can't argue with that. @@PhilMoskowitz
@@PhilMoskowitz Don't pull that "personal responsibility" crap. This is about greed and the insanity that society has allowed real estate to become. No, I am not a liberal---they make me want to vomit. But, you "personal responsibility" types make me just as sick.
I haven't been able, nor do I ever expect to be well off enough to live in San Francisco. That's not a big deal. They need a new plan.
Prayers sent for all🙏❤️
Same thing happened to me.
WHO R THE NEW OWNERS
This is the problem with greed and humanity just not caring about each other just we can or can't get out of them . This is a damn Shame my heart breaks for her .
before u can buy the building u shud be told that this is the situation and can’t be changed
I'm pretty sure they find out what the deal is... these aren't naive first time owners, they are investment corporations who buy up properties and businesses.
