This is one of the most beautiful vehicles in the GI Joe collection... I will have one like this someday when I move to a bigger place. It was a shame we were not able to see this great vehicle in the cartoon...
Thank you for doing a review. I got this vehicle in a large lot of Joes from a yard sale when I was about 13. It was missing a lot of parts, and I always wondered how it all was intended to function. I believe the small bombs in the main missiles were inspired by cluster bombs, which were fairly well known from the Gulf War at that time.
The exposed aspect of the figures shouldn't be an issue. This is not a front line fighting vechicle. This is a behind lines mobile rocket strike. It would be supported by wolverines, Armadillos, Vamps and the like in a convoy scenario. It's armament is not for ground defense, but anti-air. Awesome review Kevin. Love seeing the toys from long after I stopped playing with G.I. Joe.
I created this in 87. I drew it up from my imagination. My mom helped me blue print and mail it to Hasbro. It took me about 4 or 6 drawings to show everything. The only difference in my drawing was my front was round. I only requested they give me one if they actually created it. This came out a year later and I got nothing!!! Lol. I'm happy though because something I created as a child actually came to reality!!!
awesome review, I love the old gi Joe line and I've still got a lot of my old Joe's. and for fun I go to kokomo toys and collectibles to get any weapons or pieces of vehicles I've lost over the years
People who dont have #RollingThunder in their Top10 arnt with it IMO. I remember the 1st time I scene it & played w/ it in 90/91 I was Shocked by its Size an all around playable Awesomness. NTM the Bombs w/ in another Missile- I thought "Brilliant" way back than.
Ok you can tell after 1985 things got real,on both sides . Cobra was invading countries and holding large regions of territory and holding it down with easy to build prefabricated terror domes, backed up with hiss tanks, maggot, artillery, and asp anti aircraft guns, as well as many support vehicles that could provide over lapping defense.Gii Joe had to up their side with door kicking fire power and armor. The moat and mauler were no enough as main tanks so they drop this thing off the backside of a low flying c5 transport and let it run with mean dog, havoc, wolverines, and other medium and heavy armor and hope cobra suffers from the "storm trooper" effect when it comes to shooting. Which is why even the soldiers came with more than 1 gun.because cobra just was playing for keeps.
Never had one but it looks pretty damn fun. Though you wouldn't want to be either of the dudes sitting in the turret if that rocket on the cannon ever fired...
Great job, looks like a lot of work went into this review. This thing is a truly devastating asset for the Joes. Though I do wonder how such a behemoth was deployed on missions, especially to remote areas. Possibly air-lifted with a couple of Tomahawks? Do the comics elaborate on the logistics? Also, I wonder if Armadillo's belt buckle might give a clue as to the obscured details of his pants. Might he be wearing some kind of modified rodeo chaps to go along with his cattle-head buckle?
+redvitaminblue In #76 it was shipped to Cobra Island by a Landing Craft. But in #80 it was air-lifted by one Tomahawk (!). Thanks for the chaps idea, I didn't even think of that!
+formbx257 Also, the mammal that shares the figure's namesake is an iconic animal native to the southern US, particularly in Texas, where rodeos are a popular sport.
Did anyone else notice the box and the vehicle are actually the Canadian versions? The box has English and French on it and the vehicle has a sticker of the Canadian flag.
Great review again, love the stop motion action at the end! My Rolling Thunder has a bit of a different color scheme to it, the lighter green differs. Maybe european version? I have also seen that in the gold on the Iron Grenadiers vehicles.
+Lucyan71 The UK version was a brighter green according to Isaac Wilson (who commented on the Quick Look video). I really need to check out more of the color differences in European toys. The photos on BloodForTheBaron Action Force collector site don't look any different but it might just be lighting.
Awesome review, answered a lot of questions I had about the Rolling Thunder. Thank You. As for his shirt, it looks more like a sleeveless t-shirt to me ;-D
Its weird how the toon just skipped over the Rolling Thunder while The General(an even sillier vehicle) got love in the DIC run. I'm not a huge fan. Monstrous vehicle/play sets like the MCC and Defiant seemed bizarrely logical, while this vehicle seemed an exercise in excess. Guns!Missiles! Bigger Missiles! Bigger Guns! It just seemed ridiculous. great review though, especially considering how much crap they stuffed into the play features.
I can't ever find a review or anything on wiki that mentions this, but the body of that thing is actually based on a gigantic prototype vehicle built by nazi germany (thing had solid metal and concrete wheels and was apparently dreamed up as an anti-mine vehicle that just ran over anti-tank mines without taking damage. Here's a picture i.pinimg.com/originals/e0/cd/5e/e0cd5e39eb78923a4aa7d67060212b05.jpg
The figure with this set sucks, I would have this to have it but it sucks in my opinion. The first thing I would change is taking those 4 guns mounts off, then the missile center piece doesn't need to be there, Finally the Howitzer missiles replace with detachable reactive armor and smoke launchers on both sides, also detail it , so one figure may stand up using a periscope, moreover the other two are seated at the gun station and com station. Have a saw mounted gun on the cupola .
The 80's, a great time to be a kid!!!!!
Man I remember how big this box seemed at 8 years old. I felt I could ride in this thing.
fun fact I learned when I was younger, the Rolling Thunder floats very well.
I wanted one of these SO BAD when I was a kid. Great review.

I was lucky enough to have one of these as a kid. Thanks Dad. 😀
I had this as kid! Wow, amazing to see!
Thanks for the review, and battle scene!
I got a real kick out of it.

Pretty sure these were nukes, G.I. Joe's version of a MIRV haha
The small missiles inside the big one are like "Multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles" as in ICBMs...
Never had one but it looks pretty damn fun. Though you wouldn't want to be either of the dudes sitting in the turret if that rocket on the cannon ever fired...

Im glad you went and made videos past the original 13. I thought you were not gonna get this far.
Great review Kevin! This is an awesome toy! it's big enough to have come with 2 figures, it should've for the price.
Love your reviews really awesome vehicle and cool info about the rolling thunder
Is it me or does vehicle look like the Havoc's big brother. I could see the Havocs working with the in a convoy.
Great review again, love the stop motion action at the end!

Awesome review of a very amazing vehicle.
Awesome review, answered a lot of questions I had about the Rolling Thunder. Thank You. As for his shirt, it looks more like a sleeveless t-shirt to me ;-D
My Dad bought this for me for Christmas, I thought it was the coolest. Put a lot of play wear on it,Good times.
those nuke rockets launched would blow up the Rolling Thunder!!! hahahaha...

Could the cattle head belt buckle also denote the sound a herd of them stampeding makes, like "rolling thunder?"
Awesome review. I've just discovered your channel, and looks fantastic.
Yes "Ligtning & Thunder" i.e. what happens to the weather around the dropsite during (artificially) & after (naturally) A real world Nuclear Blast.
I'm sorry but just watching the big missile enter the terrordrome just made me spit out my drink!!!!
Thank you I am so glad you did this one love it
I enjoy your videos. Do you know where I can get replacement stickers? I have a few vehicles I would like to clean up. Thank you.
.
Another great review!!
what type of string should I use on Gi joe Parachute when it has no string after it was bought on eBay?
Any thin cotton-twisted cream-colored string will work. You can find that type in craft stores.
HUGE.
Rolling Thunder seems to be even bigger than Cobra Hammerhead and that one is already big vehicle.
Nicely done Kevin how are you
+TheDarthValen Thanks, man! Love your videos too!
+formbx257 thanks brother keep them coming
Fixing to look up but Transformers Optimus Prime was a Rolling Thunder in a crossover right? !
That thing is a monster. Just one of the guns would one shot a Hiss tank.

Its a great collector's item but If u look at it scientifically and imagine what if someone really builds this thing for real, u would laugh out loud

Cool set, but the figure it came with is so damn ugly
