This is the alternate ending. The ending I saw has him escape the room after it's set on fire and after recovering writes his story. At first his wife doesn't believe him but then he plays the recorder and it has their daughters voice on it from the hotel incident proving it all did happen. I like that ending better.
Yeah this is the ending I saw. Why is this one shown in the video an alternate ending and not the original? The original is what I saw in theaters too.

This is the ending I saw. It's more bleak but also more realistic to King's original meaning
funny enough, I have a friend back in college and we have seen this movie different time & place, and we fvcking argue about the ending for years haha, turns out there are different ending version of this movie, and yeah, the one I saw is where he escaped the room while the version he watched is the same as this recapped

This was one of the more terrifying movies I've ever seen... it helps if you understand it's an allegory for addiction. Like a self-made prison where others try to reach you, but can't, and you're tormented by your own demons.

I remember a different ending... The firefighters save him from the room, then he and his wife live together, believing the whole event to be a hallucination. The protagonist writes a book about it and finally checks the package containing his dictaphone. He plays the recording together with his wife and you can actually hear his daughter.
Apparently there were multiple endings to this movie.
Yeah meaning he died and she's now trapped in the room hallucinating
Funny thing is, the first time I watched this, it was the ending in which he was able to survive and wrote the story. Then some years have passed and this movie came to mind and watched it again, not realizing I was watching a different ending that time, I didn't mind it and thought to myself maybe I really just remembered the movie differently during the first watch. Then I came across this and read the comments, realizing it really has two endings.

There are four endings to this film. In addition to the ending that appears in the theatrical release (also the default ending of the DVD), three other alternative endings were shot. The incentive for this was based on the director's belief that King's intention, in his original short story, was to leave the conclusion ambiguous. None of the four endings matches the ending of King's original short story.

It’s weird that the director would think that. There was nothing ambiguous about King’s ending. Mike was totally out. He was deeply traumatized and dealing with long term health complications related to being burned but he was out.

Edit: A couple of articles have stated there are _two_ filmed endings, not four.
They also state the ending in the video is the original, but test audiences didn't like it, hence the ending that some people remember (where he survives), which was in the released version.
@@Mythraen it just doesn’t make sense for anyone to think that King’s intention in the original story was for the conclusion to be ambiguous. Whatever speculation there is in a Wikipedia article, I’ve read the story more times than I can count. There was no ambiguity in the way it ended. More than a year had passed, Mike had quit writing permanently, and was dealing with significant physical and psychological trauma. But he was indeed out.
Not that this is the most egregious claim out there. I’ve seen someone try to defend the crap sandwich that called itself the new Pet Sematary by claiming that King originally intended for Ellie to be the one who died, not Gage. Which is not only false but offensive if one knows what actually inspired that story.

This is the best depiction of horror in my opinion. A shapeless evil that turns into your worst fears.
Damn, thats not how I remembered it ending! I remember him making it out with his wife, the wife doubted his story but glad he survived the hotel fire, but he plays the burnt recorder and they both hear the voice of his daughter come out together before the credits roll.

This was a shock! I've watched the movie on DVD at least twice and the ending is completely different! Now I have to take a look to see whether there is an alternative ending on the DVD I have, that I never looked at.
There are four or five fully finished endings.

@@ccatarinajm7114 There's two versions floating around, the DVD release version (he lives, ex hears the daughter on the tape recorder and freaks out) and the director's cut version (he dies, funeral etc.).
If you buy the movie digitally now, you'll get the director's cut.
There is another filmed ending where he does escape but the ex doesn't hear the daughter's voice on the tape and goes about her business. The other supposed filmed ending is him dying and his publisher receiving a manuscript of the book that couldn't have been written.
@@Koowluh I have it on DVD with the daughter and the tape recorder and such. I have never seen or heard of the director's cut ending until this youtube video. And the other two versions you write about are a variation of the two, which I hadn't heard of either. Why don't they release a Blu-Ray with all 4 versions on it?

I looked it up and apparently the ending when he survives is the ones in the movies and on dvd, it was changed to this because the director thought it was a "downer" and so he changed it. There are actually 4 endings to the movie which can be found on its Wikipedia.
There is a CLAIM of four endings which can be found on Wikipedia. Citation _very much_ needed on any besides two of them.
ScreenRant has an article making the same claim, but also doesn't explain how the author knows that.

The multiple endings was really a good idea for a horror movie I remember seeing this ending the first time and I watched it a second time just hoping it would end differently somehow but knowing it wouldn't, except it did and the second time I watched I got the good ending. It was crazy because here I am watching about a room that's messing with this guys mind and perception wishing it would end differently and then it actually does...really freakey.

that helicopter looks suspiciously like a plane
The thing is, the room never actually tries to kill him in any way. It's purely mental, making the person inside kill themselves. Even with the cold weather I don't think he would have died

For some reason I started focusing on the fact that there’s no way a hotel would have a window capable of opening on the 14th floor. I literally couldn’t focus on the horror aspects because I kept thinking about that

In the end he's ghost is in the room, yeah, but then his daughter's voice calls to him then he answers and follows the voice OUT OF THE ROOM! He didn't survive in this version of the film, but his ghost wasn't trapped in the room either. Watch Out and Take care

Those deaths took place over the course of 100 years (give or take). Obviously he has not been managing the hotel that long. And since he doesn’t own it, if the key went missing, he’d probably get fired, a new key would be made, and everything continue but under the watch of someone who doesn’t understand the room.
@@starkman78 Actually it doesn't matter how long did he run the place, it's enough he knew about it. 56 deaths in the same room - even if in a hundred years - is very weird. It must got attention widespread, also the authorities must knew about it.
However, the manager should simply keep deny access to the room, but instead he raised the man's curiosity.
If no one else, the owner or the authorities should find out what the hell is going on there and put an end to it.
Depression is way scarier.
