She had surgery after being diagnosed with Reinke's edema, which is a swelling of the vocal folds that can be caused by overuse of the voice. She was performing since she was a child. Disney didn't give her time to breath. And her songs were always challenging to sing. Also around that time she was going through that breakup after she lost her house. I think her voice got lower after surgery but her emotional state also was the reason. After surgery she put out plastic hearts and entered her rock era. After the recent album she didn't do many live performances, except the backyard session. I wonder if it's because this time she wants to really take time to take care of her voice more.
