Droitwich Spa - Salt Town

  • Droitwich has been inhabited since prehistoric times when salt springs were first discovered along the River Salwarpe. The Romans and later the Saxons exploited this resource, the Romans calling the town Salinae ("The Saltings") and the local name being Wic - the Spring - which variously became Saltwic and, when the town received its Charter in 1215, Droitwich.
    In the 19th century it became a spa town along with others in the country. The salt industry persisted until 1922; some relics of that industrial past persist and there is a Salt Museum.

    The Tudor buildings are marvellous and the barge area and flowerbeds are great…
