I think the reason why chan and felix’s accents are still really thick is because they have each other to talk to. I remember chan saying he talks to Felix in English bc Felix really brings out his accent. And before Felix chan said he was kind of losing his accent. So for Jake, he doesn’t really have an aussie friend (or
Aussie in the group) to interact with on a daily basis, and since he’s been immersed in Korea he kind of loses it. But if he is around an aussie friend he’d get a thicker accent in that moment.

    • @Dev.85

Neither Chan or Jake would lose their accent completely. I know a person who moved from England to Australia as a teen. Has a thick Aussie accent but completely reverts to English accent with family. Quite literally just switches and doesn't realise she has until I laugh at her.

    • @kelvinzhang36

Wait, if that’s the case then why is Rosé not losing her accent? She has no Aussie member to talk to in the group.

@@kelvinzhang36 occasionally she drops her accent when speaking but Jennie has a New Zealandish accent. Some of Jennie's words are pronounced similar to Rosé so that might help a little. Typically someone in their mid teens and older find it harder to lose their accent.

To be honest, its hard to lose the accent - if u were born and grew up in the western countries. For those who’ve claimed to lose their accent due to no one to talk to in same accent - it’s pretty weird. People who wasn’t raise/born outside would mostly claimed so.
No matter how long you’ve stayed in Korea/other asian countries - its damn hard to lose the accent

Jake's first language is English and he is from Australia, but he moved to Korea more than a year ago for training and he learned Korean and only spoke Korean during that time. Now, most of the time he only speaks in Korean and sometimes in English like in awards speechs, etc. Also, Jake speaks in Korean with ENHYPEN members, so he doesn't have close people to talk in English, maybe Jay (another ENHYPEN member) since Jay was born and raised in America until he was like 9 years old, but Jay said his English is raw and a little broken bc he does not remember that much so there are not many options. Finally, ENHYPEN also has a Japanese member and he also communicates with the other members in Korean so it would be difficult if Jake only speaks in English all the time knowing that more than half of the members are Korean and one is Japanese, it would be very confusing, so they all use Korean to communicate almost all the time so it is understandable that sometimes Jake gets a bit confused when speaking in English and occasionally he also gets confused with some Korean words.

@@elixx2677 I don’t think that’s true though because your first language is normally the one you grew up with not the one your parents speak, like most of asians in other countries he must have spoken korean (mixed with some english) with his family (maybe tv and friends) and solely english for the rest. He said his korean was not good when he was a trainee, so that mean he rarely talked in korean and it doesn’t make sense that someone’s “first language” is one they don’t really know how to speak properly, and that he didn’t use as much.

      @sharielane 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@janij3696 Honestly, from what little of his English speaking that I've seen, he sounds like an urban Australian speaking in that polite phone/retail "voice" that people put on when speaking in such situations. Which makes sense since much of the video that's shown of him speaking English is during interviews or of him speaking in some sort of formal capacity.
It'd be interesting to see some video of him speaking in a relaxed informal environment with other English speakers to see if his accent becomes broader when not making a conscious effort to be well-spoken, but I haven't come across any (admittedly I didn't try very hard to find some).
If you watch videos of Bindi Irwin she also speaks in that same sort of manner. Interestingly enough Bindi Irwin grew up 3hrs north of Brisbane in Beerwah.

I respectfully disagree, but I get what you are saying. Living in Brisbane, there are individuals who speak like Walter. Jake seems to be toning his accent because staff or his group may have trouble understanding his accent. And secondly, the way Jake speaks reminds me of the city folks in Brisbane. Also, there isn't single accent in Australia. There are so many different types of Australian accents.

These guys’ critiques don’t seem too credible to me. I’m bilingual myself and know that you naturally adapt to your environment. When I’m in the Philippines it takes me about a week to get fluent in Tagalog again. Then in a few weeks I start thinking in Tagalog. Same when I come back to America, within a few weeks I start forgetting Tagalog words. The accents come along with it naturally.

I’d also like to add that i basically have my own dialect which is a mix of cebuano, bol-anon, and surigaonon which is why my friends sometimes struggle to understand me 🥲 i grew up speaking all of them at the same time so yeah.

well english is Jake’s first language and he actually revealed in a vlive that before his audition he barely knew any korean, he even played an audio clip of him practicing (it was adorable), it’s just that unlike Rosè and Chan and Felix, in Enhypen, Jake is the only fluent english speaker (there is Jay as well who is also fluent in english but Korean is more comfortable for him), Chan and Felix can use english with eachother and Rosè has Jennie and Lisa to talk with, and you know what they say, use it or lose it, the less he speaks in english and the more he has to speak in korean, the less and less he’ll be able to remember english and his accent will get weaker and weaker, if you compare his accent now to the video from his audition, it’s definitely gotten softer and less apparent.

The closest to a British accent that I know of in KPOP is Ten from NCT (he’s in the subunit WayV), he went to Shrewsbury International School, a private school in Bangkok that is affiliated with Shrewsbury School, an independent boarding school here in the UK in a town called Shrewsbury (say shr-oh’s-bree). He definitely has a Thai accent when he speaks English but you can occasionally hear British English influences in his speaking. But YangYang from NCT (also in the subunit WayV, which is actually a Chinese subunit (NCT is very confusing!)) lived in Düsseldorf, Germany for 6 years of his teenage life. As such he speaks English with a German accent, which I think is pretty cool. And if Ten and YangYang are speaking together without the rest of the group around they’ll often (but not always) speak in English with each other, with some Korean and some Mandarin thrown in just for good measure 😉.

It sounds like an Australian Accent with (what I assume is) a more Korean melodic way of speaking. Which would help explain why they heard a mix of accents.
When I went to France on exchange, I found when I spoke in English I would still speak melodically in French. It would help French speakers understand my english.

I knew people in highschool in Brisbane who had only ever spoken aussie english but had similar, very slight accents because their parents and community members were not native australian english speakers. I'm not sure but could be the case.

Sam Carter is british kpop singer who was in lunafly. I'm not sure if they are still active. Other aussie kpop stars are prince mak (former JJCC), kevin kim (ZE:A), christian yu (former cclown), hayana (former Evol), Hanbyul Jang (former ledapple and former host of arirang after school club). I hope this helps!

What Walter said about pretty much everything is how I felt after Jennie’s cover of When Will My Life Begin.. it sounded a bit awkward especially her r’s. It sounded like anㅏorㅓ instead. Idk she has a mix of NZ, British and American. lol but everyone knows I’d get wrecked if I commented this on her cover 💀

As an Australian he has the slightest “Asian” accent which I think is what you were talking about in the beginning. He doesn’t sound fully Aussie. Probably because his guest language was Korean.

When he first came to korea, he said that his accent was very thick compared to now, but then he first learn korea just years after he came from korea. Since he is still bad and learning korean, he is trying to speak korean and be familiar with it, but then he is also like losing the accent a bit since he is immersing himself with korean more than english,
