I took delivery of a '65 Mustang with a 289 cid, 4 barrel carb., 4 speed manual transmission on Sept. 22, 1964. Because of it's performance, I thought Ford had put the 271 horsepower motor in it by mistake. I street raced at every chance I got. That was stupid, but I had a lot of great times!

I love this car for the visceral feel that it is projecting. I grew up in a strong Ford family in Detroit. This car brings back the strong memories I have of that glorious period between 1963 and 1968 when Caroll Shelby and Ford ruled the racing world. I remember seeing pictures and talking to Ford engineers about the Mustang IRS. These guys are not BSing, it is the real deal. I always wished Ford had green lighted the IRS for production or as an option for the Mustang. I owned a 1966 K-Code hardtop. Jay is right the GT350 and engine pulls you into the driving experience. If I have one complaint with this car and it deals with switching out the original solid lifter camshaft for a high lift roller rocker camshaft. I have nothing against the roller rocker. I have one in my 1987 Mustang GT 5-speed Convertible. It does what it supposed to do perfectly in a 87 Mustang but not in a 65 or 66 Shelby GT 350. If you ever owned K code Mustang the beautiful sound of a solid lifter making power at any speed is truly intoxicating. It was part of allure of the 289. I know roller rocker makes more power but who cares. The car is an historical throw back to an era that a few great men got together and made something historical and unforgettable. The manual steering, high pressure plate clutch, un- silenced air cleaner, noisy exhaust and solid lifter cam was the strong allure of the Shelby GT 350 and 289 K-Code engine . I hope the Venice Crew will give the buyer the option to have a solid lifter cam in his GT350. Outside of that the car is perfect in its execution.

I got to experience a little bit of these cars, as I had a 66 back in the day when I was a senior in high school and man, those guys look a lot older than me. Jim goes to the same barber as I do, besides sharing our first name. Didn't ever meet Carroll Shelby though. They were real rust buckets in KY, where they salt the roads in what we used to call "winter". We don't have winter anymore around these parts. The undercoating was a single coat of paint. Never heard of a competition model. I am glad Jay is documenting this story, because after these guys are gone, it could be lost forever.

If it works it will still be better than most other cars these days with tape players still in them.
That high quality tape reel just waiting to jam up and get stuck inside......lol
At least you aren't forced to have a wireless connection to listen to your own music like in some modern cars.....

My buddy used to have a 90's Thunderbird, and when he bought it, there was a Lynard Skynard tape stuck in the cassette deck. Every time "Call Me The Breeze" came on, he'd drive a little faster. Good times.

This is great, I just came from another site where a guy in Australia was driving a ‘65 with a 500hp 289 and a ‘69 with a 625hp 351W. Mustang Mornings can’t be beat and those Torque Thrust Wheels are the most beautiful Mustang Wheel ever made! That thing sounds so sweet it’s orgasmic!

This was my high school dream car back in the early 80s. I still have a Revell model in this color scheme that I put together in high school. As a widowed teacher and father, this car will never make it up my driveway, but I still love it.

I was 6 yrs old and sitting on my front porch , the neighbor 15 houses down the road came driving by in one same white and blue , my dad had a 68 cornet 440 rt. That stang just caught my eye and the sounds wowed me. I think that was when I fell in love with cars and started a life log career, I had to know why and how motors worked. A broken rusted out lawn motor was the first engine I took apart and some how put it back together at 8 and it ran ,all it needed was a new spark plug but , I got to see the inside and I was the only kid that had his own engine in our neighborhood . Funny how 1 car affected my life so much.

To be fair, the SCCA designed the GT350 more than Carroll Shelby did. Ford wanted to go sportscar racing in 1965 (Lee Iacocca in particular) and they tried to shove the Mustang on to the SCCA but the SCCA were having none of it. Quite correctly they told Ford the Mustang was NOT a sportscar and to go away because they were dreaming. Facing this situation, Carroll Shelby went down to his buddies at the SCCA and asked them "What do I need to change on a Mustang before you'll accept it as a sportscar?" And they laid out all the changes which needed to be made. And from there, Shelby American made those changes happen in the form of mass production. Of all the Shelby Mustangs, the 1965 car was the only car which truly adhered to the SCCA's homologation requirements.

Love these old guys being absolutely pleased from ear to ear about their passion and heritage, and being equally happy from Jay's experience with this gorgeous ride.
Tech and speed nerds can obsess over the latest, being demoed by younger people trying their best to be cool, as opposed to straight history and performance info.
Jay, you and Harry Metcalf have created my love affair for older cars, as well as my distaste for computers on wheels. Bravo for keeping true driving spirit alive.

Oh my gosh I wouldn't have thought so many people would freak out about a date typo by some social media or video editing assistant. Relax everyone! It's not like Jay himself made the mistake. They'll probably fix it soon and then the comments won't even make sense. It's really not a big deal. Are you car people, or trolls? Seems hardly anybody cares to comment about the car itself.

I was watching an interview with Carroll Shelby yesterday and he said he never actually wanted to build a Mustang & he hated when the Mustang got more muscle & heavier. He loved his sport cars. He actually never even wanted to develop the 427, but had to because Chevy was pushing their big blocks.
