My parents were friends of the late and honorable Adam Clayton Powell Jr. and his Hazel Scott. I remember going to church and listening to Rev. Powell and seeing all the dignitaries on Sunday mornings. This was all before my parents made their final separation from one another and the great Adam C Powell Jr. and affectionately called by me my Aunt Hazel. I would love to have those days again, fighting for the right to be Free and respected, while keeping our own selves and communities clean, respected yet inequitable...But one thing We had pride in who we were and we were united. Fast forward some 50 yrs later...Look what we have poverty, a false sense of pride, children who believe they are entitled to whatever they ask for; disrespect for ourselves, our communities, each other. Preachers with big churches who play the same "Ol-G role as do the rappers our children worship. Mega Pastors who have forgotten where they have come from, and still expect the poor members to pay for their airplanes, Rolls Royces , and cover up their sexual misconduct...Sounds like politics to me.
Or maybe it's just what you ask for when you seek a King and you backstab your true friends and fail to vote. Et tu Brute.

I watched this movie two times. Although it was a good move, (Harry Lennix nailed it as Adam Clayton Powel), it only gives an overview of his life. Now I have to read his biography and autobiography. There's obviously more to this man than any movie can reveal.

Thank you for posting this film. I was the Producer and it is the culmination of a 10-year journey. It was nominated for 3 NAACP Image Awards (Best TV movie, Actor, Actress); won Best TV Movie from the cable executives at the National Association of Minorities in Cable (NAMIC); a Golden Satellite Award to Vanessa Williams (Best Actress in a TV Movie); and a Reel Images Award to Harry Lennix (Best Actor in a TV Movie). The deepest statement in this movie was at the end when he was told he should leave that island catch up with the times and he replied "the times need to catch up with Me".... And he was right. We are STILL not caught up to where he was then.

I've heard of Adam Clayton Powell Jr. before, but never truly knew of his contributions to civil rights. I was googling Harry Lennix which guided me to this movie. Anyways, we need more focus on our unsung heroes of the movement outside of the mainstaples such as Dr. King. Both men stood for justice for people of color, albeit in their own ways, but nevertheless fought a good fight that changed the laws of the land. My prayer, is that we continue the fight that our ancestors started because there is more work to be done.

Harry Lennix played the heck out of this role. Adam Clayton Powell was beyond Dynamic. He was a man who could never be contained by societal rules - all for the good of others. My son acted with Harry Lennix in a short film called Keep Pushin'. Harry Lennix was the supporting lead, my son, Jadon Woodard, was the lead.

Never heard of this man in my life, I was just browsing through Vanessa Williams Instagram and saw a picture of the film, searched for it, and it took me here. I was not expecting the content of this film at all. Thoroughly enjoyed the film and appreciate the educational history lesson. Dare I say this man in the heart of racism probably done more for African Americans than Obama did. He challenged head on, to evolution ignorant folks. Great man! Now I am convinced Obama could have done more for African Americans in his time of Presidency, If Powell was in his position then or today, he would have.

David Johnson Powell was responsible for the passage of more civil rights legislation than any other political figure, black or white. It’s very sad that you had to hear about him from a movie rather than a history book taught to you in school.
Obama pales in comparison to this great man. He was a true black hero to me and others of my generation. He also baptized me as well as thousands of other black kids back in the day.

David Johnson; he was a racist in college (passing for white several years) until some black classmates found out and were outraged. Besides being a " window dressing Christian, he was a typical career politician who get drunk on power and addicted to the perks of the job. He cheated on his wives and stole from taxpayers. Disgusting.

Antonella Davis Dr. King was social justice warriors he forced politicians to do what was right by sacrifice and demonstration.
Secondly, Adam Powell was a politician that was his job. He was an effective politician that wasn’t about to play with his counterparts. He’s a gem.
But, we need to learn to distinguish the differences in leaders. Especially between those who are electeds and those who are not. Period.

There is a difference between humility and rolling over and kissing ass. He did have humility, however, when you have to walk among the Pitbulls,Rottweilers, and Doberman Pincher, you must not flinch not even an inch. If you did not know Rev. Powell you can't judge him from a film that tries to give you a glimpse of who he was to the country and to the people of proud to say HARLEM.

A TH-cam video simply titled, "Rev Adam Clayton Powel" posted by JohnHenry1869, is an excellent companion piece to Keep The Faith Baby. Actual words Mr. Powell spoke in the movie can be found there. I love looking at archival stock footage of our great Black leaders. Ironically, I was reunited with Keep The Faith Baby on today… after having stumbled upon the JohnHenry1869 posted video about Mr. Powell on yesterday. It's amazing how TH-cam catalogs then presents like topic content that's viewed by its users!

EXCELLENT MOVIE - THANK YOU. However, I remain amazed that in order to find anything about Mr. Powell, you really have to dig, dig, dig! It's as if he was deliberately erased from history. It is rare that you hear about Black people who were not the stereotypical downtrodden, uneducated, poor souls that are so often portrayed from this time period. He was an iconic example.

Great depiction , of a committed man to serve the people in a practical manner. Personally very thankful for this, however did not like the show excessive drinking at every stage. It is the drinking that destroyed this gem of a man from serving fully , and cutting short his beautiful life , and brain. Was a waste this alcohol creates.!!!. The farther you keep this drug from the newer generation the better it is. That is one best service that can be done in my humble opinion.

🤨 How come I’ve never heard of this film?
That A. Phillip Randolph speech was treacherous. 😂 This man was slick but for a good cause. Then, when he moved up, he upgraded his wife. He seemed so strategic about everything. This is a nice film to gain wisdom, except the wife upgrade. 🤦🏽‍♀️

For some reason, they cut info I offered for Tom Degan--which was a link to a site "Hundreds of Mourners Pay Respects
To Powell". Simply, there WAS also a casket and ceremony. Look it up if you care to--easy to find.

Hes a pretty good actor. Adam was the man. what a time to be alive. Black folks was just beautiful back then. Some white folks got alot of explaining to do before a Holy God and on bended knee at that.

Funny they mention Hazel Scott even though she was his second wife and second one that was in the entertainment business but he didn't even stand by her while he was at Congress during the McCarthyism situation how is it that he was still able to keep his seat during McCarthyism yet she was blacklisted things that make you go HMMM

  • @kaleahcollins4567

Their portrayal of Hazel Scott is a farce first of all yes she was born in Trinidad but her so cold grandiose or feelings of superiority with only educational and that's only when it came to fellow White she came to this country at 4 years old she considered herself African-American of Trinidadian descent but never use that it was outside of such as Adam Clayton who decided to differentiate and met her Superior because she was from Trinidad and not African American so to speak but she was very much so and she also fought for the rights of black entertainers in Hollywood she refused to work for three days which cost $40,000 at that time because the movie she was in did not depict black women and the way she felt they should she got what she wanted she was the first to only play herself in any role that she did she never played a maid nor Mammy no prostitute
