  • The Aligarh Movement was the push to establish a modern system of education for the Muslim population of British India, during the later decades of the 19th century. The movement′s name derives from the fact that its core and origins lay in the city of Aligarh in Northern India and, in particular, with the foundation of the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental Collegiate School in 1875. The founder of the original college, and the other educational institutions that developed from it, was Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. He became the leading light of the wider Aligarh Movement.

    The Aligarh Movement refers to a socio-political and educational reform movement that emerged in the late 19th century in British India, with its center of activity in Aligarh, a city in present-day Uttar Pradesh, India. The movement was primarily led by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, a prominent Muslim philosopher, educationist, and social reformer.
    The Aligarh Movement aimed to address the educational, social, and political challenges faced by Muslims in British India. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan believed that education and modernization were crucial for the upliftment and empowerment of Muslims in a changing world dominated by British colonial rule.
    One of the key aspects of the Aligarh Movement was the establishment of the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh, which later evolved into the prestigious Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). The college provided a modern education that combined Western knowledge with Islamic teachings, languages, and culture. The institution aimed to produce a new generation of educated Muslims who could compete with their counterparts from other communities and contribute to the progress of the nation.
    The Aligarh Movement also focused on advocating for the rights and interests of Muslims within the political landscape of British India. Sir Syed Ahmed Khan encouraged Muslims to engage in political participation and build alliances with other communities. He emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation to address the concerns and aspirations of Muslims in a predominantly Hindu-majority country.
    Furthermore, the movement played a significant role in promoting the Urdu language and literature, considering it an essential aspect of Muslim cultural identity. It worked towards the development and standardization of Urdu as a means of communication and expression.
    The Aligarh Movement was a response to the marginalization and educational backwardness faced by Muslims during the colonial period. It aimed to bridge the gap between traditional Islamic education and modern Western education, enabling Muslims to adapt to the changing times while preserving their religious and cultural values. The movement had a lasting impact on the educational, social, and political landscape of India, and the Aligarh Muslim University continues to be a prominent institution for higher education.

    why was sir syed ahmed khan criticized for favouring the British

    • @lifeofkabir693
      @lifeofkabir693 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      misbah siddique revolt of 1857. From this time onwards, the british started suspecting the muslims at large as they were violently opposed to them ( british). As a consequence of this approach, the muslims were treated more harshly than any other. Sir syed took it upon himself to bring about reconciliation b/w muslims and british. He wanted good and favourable place for muslim in british rule.
