I remember the episode when he moved to a tropical island to get away from daily grind. He was bored by the end of the first day and returned to Mayberry shortly afterwards. Classic stuff.
I was wondering where he got the money to retire and move to a tropical island. I guess that I take after my mother in that regards. That's just the way she would always over analyze TV shows and movies.
@@mrb3135 He did say where he got the money and it had nothing to do with his mother. He had been working as a County Clerk for many years and he saved it. He wasn't foolish with his money so he had plenty of money. He also said in that episode that after several years when he does run out of money, he will find a job on the island 🏝.
I really liked Howard Sprague. Some of my favorite Howard episodes are the "Old Sam" episode and the bowling one that you referred to. I also liked the one where he moves to an island in the Caribbean. In that one I think he had the same idea that probably most people have at one point in their lives: to leave their mundane jobs and go live on a tropical island. But Howard actually followed through and did it. At least temporarily, until he realized that his paradise WAS in the sleepy town of Mayberry. I also liked the one where Allan Melvin, once again, showed up as a bully trying to intimidate Howard into not dating Millie. Yes, this was a rehash of an old Barney episode(also with Allan), but I love the little "perk up" movement that Howard has once he realizes that his bluff worked on the bully. As for the actor, Jack Dodson, he tends to show up on some of my favorite shows. He was Gus the "Rayhound" bus driver(and janitor of the bus station, plus every other position at the station) on an episode of Mama's Family. And quite importantly, he was on the premiere episode of Newhart, as the realtor who sells the Stratford Inn to Dick Laudon(Bob Newhart) and his wife. One thing I remember about that meeting is that Jack towers above Bob, who I guess was pretty short, but not short on talent, that's for sure.
I liked Howard Sprague. My favorite episode was when he was having a party at his redone bachelor pad. Him and Andy were stand there watching Helen and Emmet dancing. Howard slapped Andy on the back. Little hard. Andy had to take a couple steps. Andy was laughing so hard. Great video. Thanks
I liked Mr. Dodson a great deal. I was a fan of the black & white episodes since I grew up watching them. When the color episodes came along I didn’t watch as much but always liked Mr. Dodson in them when I did. I have a hunch that in private life he was actually fun to be around. Thanks
My favorite color episode was when Andy was being held hostage in a cabin. It was Howard and Otis to the rescue. Howard was captured, Otis was drunk. I believe this was the last appearance of Otis.
As a kid growing up I watched a lot of television and Howard wasn't my favorite on the show but he was important to the background of the show. It's the people of Mayberry that make it all feel so real. His presence was important. With that said, as a kid I grew up on "Sprague Street" in Nebraska so I think that's kinda cool. Great show. It was indeed a good time to be a kid back then.
One of my favorite later season episodes was "Howard The Comedian." In it he decided to go on a local television show, and tell jokes about his friends in Mayberry. After the show is taped, he and the gang gather at Andy's house to watch. Everyone is having a great time, until it's their turn to become the butt of his jokes, and suddenly no one is laughing! Great episode!
He also had the town mad at him in Mayberry RFD when him and Emmett went to NYC to appear on a TV show to talk about advantages of living in a small town compared to a large city when he gets overwhelmed by the sights and glitter of the city and doesn't come off too well.
Loved seeing Jack Dodson doing unusual roles in The Getaway and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot. He brought an every man presence to his performances. Great actor who left us way too soon.
I have always enjoyed this mans works in acting, he was funny yet serious in Andy Griffith Show, he did a lot of appearances on many shows, he was also very Good in the movie "The Getaway" 1973 with Steve McQueen. Jack was a great actor IMO.
I also remember him from "Happy Days" and "Barney Miller" (S7/E1 - Homicide: Part 1, where he kills his barber). He did a lot of TV shows and was always a welcome performer in them. Quote from Barney Miller episode: [a man and a woman sharing the holding cell] Harriet Shulton: Did you kill your wife? Henry St. Martin (played by Jack Dodson): [whispering] Yes, but they don't know about that, yet.
The episode where the church had a conflict because they had to fix the building problem and the choir members wanted new robes. Howard fixed the problem by lowering one side of the church rather than lifting up the sagging side. The ladies got the robes and the church building continued on. This taught me a lot as a pastor. There usually is a way to fix a problem if cooler heads will prevail.
Maybe it's just because I've seen the older ones too long, or it's just Howard's goofiness, but he's become maybe my favorite character on that show. I know a guy who's a lot like Howard, so that could be like it. Anyway, brilliantly oddball dork character.
Thank You so much for the tribute for Howard Sprague played by Jack Dodson. A very fine actor. I hope you and your family are doing good Mr. Dave Sundstrom.
He helped round out the cast by being a good "town nerd"! Haha! I enjoyed the one where he thought he was going to turn his house into a "bachelor pad!"
So glad to see a tribute to my favorite Mayberry RFD character. Such a lovely remembrance you wrote. I still smile when I think of the tropical island episode. He could break your heart in "The Getaway," and I particularly remember his dramatic turn on the original "Hawaii 5-0." Thank you again for such a warm, thoughtful post.

I remember an episode where Dolly the horse 🐎 refused to eat when her owner took a a couple of weeks off out of town. Opie tried everything he could to get her to eat, but she refused. Her owner came back, but she still refused to eat. Opie figured out that she refused to eat because she wanted to go back to work. Andy, Goober, and Howard were sitting together outside. Howard thought that Dolly was stupid for wanting to go back to work. Goober asked Howard what he would do after he retires. Howard described his typical day and he said that he would get bored. Then he said about Dolly, "that's one smart horse."
One of my favorite color episodes was the one where Howard wants to join a club but his mother doesn't want him to. In the end, they let him because they can't prove his mother had good reason.
He was the introvert as well as the sigma male on the Andy Griffith show. To come and think of it Howard Sprague was pretty cool because he wasn't the center of attention. He was the guy that was passionately in love with a girl. Just that he was sidetracked when a smooth talking guy would come along. Now, who he was interested in is no longer interested in him and that's the way it goes at times. He always chose to move on because his dignity and self respect was more important than anything else. Howard Sprague was a man of principles.
Gosh Dave, you are really really good at these things! This was beautifully done! Why don’t you do these professionally? Seriously! I really enjoyed this one!

I agree, I really didn't like the colored episodes of the Andy Griffith Show. My favorite episodes with Howard was when he had his groovy bachelor pad, and when he fell in love with Millie. I kinda wished they would have married them,. It would have made for some great episodes!♥️
Jack was good as the dying judge who checked into "St. Elsewhere," too. With reference to Andy's irritability: I hate the episode where Opie's flunking math. I understand they liked to play things a little more seriously once in a while . . . . but Andy's *"get upstairs and study!"* is a shocking and ugly moment that just seemed out of place in this series. Andy really came off like a villain in that one, so thank goodness they had Helen Crump stand up for Opie.
Cocky Aunt Bee learned her lesson when she tried to run for Howard's elected position. He cleaned her clock in the debate, she had to withdraw when she realized Howard knew everything.

He walked past dropping profanities along the way. My grandson asked if I'd ever seen him before. I said Yes, and that he'd always been that way. He was like that with passersby on the lot, and he'd never changed.

I agree, I really didn't like the colored episodes of the Andy Griffith Show. My favorite episodes with Howard was when he had his groovy bachelor pad, and when he fell in love with Millie. I kinda wished they would have married them,. It would have made for some great episodes!♥️
Good old Howard how is his mom she had full control over him.
👍interesting
Loved his appearance on the GS Show! RIP Mr. Sprague.
Thanks for all your support TP!
I always thought Jim Henson modeled Burt (of Ernie and Burt)after Jack Dodson
Howard Sprague was my personal favorite in Mayberry. Moral, smart, slightly befuddled, slightly stodgie, but with that truly sexxxy moustache .. TgT
I love the Howard Sprague character and the episodes he was on.
