Amazing that 3 of the 10 episodes that aired of "The New Andy Griffith Show" (from 1971) are available to view here on TH-cam! I sure wish I could get my hands on and be able to watch some of the episodes from "The Headmaster"...seems a bit similar to another TV Show from the same period "Room 222"...The year after The New Andy Griffith Show's cancellation, Lee Meriwether went on to star in one of the most popular TV Shows from the 1970's, "Barnaby Jones" which would run from 1972-1980! I deeply love Andy Griffith. However after seeing A Face in the Crowd, he has creeped me out ever since. That charisma was real.
I wasn’t born yet when this show came out. Didn’t know it existed. The one issue I see with new Andy is the fact that he was too old to have kids that small. Opie would have been graduating high school. Had they aged the kids up it wouldn’t have felt like an alternate reality, but a continuation.

Maybe, but your comment reminded me of an incident where I was going to pick up my sons at day care when an older gentleman was coming out of the center with a little boy. This many was older than me by at least 20 years. possibly more. I made a comment about how cute his grandson was and he corrected me right away by telling me that the child was not his grandson; but, his son. I apologized right away. Considering that some women wait until they are in their 40s to have children, it's an easy thing to do to mistake a child for somebody's grandchild.

@@Donna_G Everyone thought my father was my grandfather because of his grey hair. Same is happening with my husband and our kids. Everyone thinks he’s the granddad because of his age. My point is that there needs to be an explanation like a second marriage or he served 20 years in the military so he waited to settle down. More to the point i probably wouldn’t have noticed it if he was playing a character not called Andy, not in a small southern town, not working in local government, etc, etc. Like I said it feels alternate reality vs continuation.

There were a lot of “The New….” shows around this time and none of them fared very well: Andy Griffith, Dick Van Dyke, Perry Mason, and Danny Thomas (Make Room for Granddaddy). One show I did like was The Jimmy Stewart Show from
1971-72 on NBC. It was seriously dated though and likely would’ve lasted a few seasons had it been on a decade earlier. By this time shows like All In The Family, Sanford & Son, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show were appealing to the “younger urban” crowd.

    • @STho205
      @STho205 3 ปีที่แล้ว

MTM Show worked so well because they just went in a totally different direction with Mary Richards than Laura Petrie.
She even looked younger the first two years than she did in the DvDyke Show since 1970 30 something fashions were much more teen girlish than a respectable elegant wife in 1960 even though she was a decade younger. By year 3 she matured back up.
The producers went out of their way to avoid similarly to her prior series. They even changed the original concept of a divorced woman starting on her own snd just changed it to a failed engagement. Smart move and no kid.
Norman Lear would use that concept a few years later with Bonnie Franklin who had no series past.

I was aware of The New AG Show, but I've never seen an episode. I did watch some footage from the show a few months back and it was somehow unsettling seeing Andy in a small southern town similar to Mayberry yet NOT Mayberry. It had an almost Twilight Zone effect on me. I think this was just too close in time to TAGS to have a chance at making it. Andy obviously went on to enormous success in Matlock, but that was nearly two decades after the end of TAGS. Btw, thanks for the gratuitous Catwoman pics. Meow! 😸😄

It's worth mentioning that this show fell victim to CBS' rural purge, along with Mayberry RFD, Green Acres, The Beverly Hillbillies, and several other shows. Without that decision by CBS, there may have been more of this show with a real chance at making it better; for sure, we will never know.

It was nearly the same show with the same producer, but Hope Lange was more Mrs Hartley than Laura Petrie. The show even referenced the old show as if he used to live back east.
Look for the episode where he was lost in the desert test riding a minibike. Best one. Best van Dyke.

Andy Griffin had good chemistry with Lee Mayweather, both here and in Angel In My Pocket, a feature where she also played his wife. It was a 1969 theatrical movie about a (Methodist or Low Church Episcopal) Pastor who is a Marine Veteran and former bricklayer, starting out in a troubled Parish in small town North Carolina. Jerry Van Dyke (also from Headmaster) played his brother-in-law who is a skilled handyman who has a problem with alcohol.

It was fairly unsuccessful (it hit TV less than a year after its release). I suspect that helped to convince him that it was time to return to TV. It took him a couple of failed TV series to do that (Adams or Eagle Lake and Salvage 1) to return to form with Matlock.

0:43 It's rare to see a newspaper make a day to date error back at the time of publication. That Hollywood paper made a mistake, as June 15, 1970 fell on a Monday, not a Sunday.
1:01 I've read that Dave Madden (Reuben Kincaid from THE PARTRIDGE FAMILY) thought his new sitcom would flop badly having to compete against Andy G's new show, but luckily for him he was wrong about that.
2:43 It's Millie Helper, or as a younger friend of mine knows her better, Yetta!
2:47 Lori Rutherford was in the original movie version of "Freaky Friday" alongside Jodie Foster & Charlene Tilton, and Marty McCall made an appearance in the final season of BONANZA as the older brother of a pair of orphans whose younger brother refused to speak. Michael Landon reused that episode's plot for LITTLE HOUSE: A NEW BEGINNING, which was the new name for the final season of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE.

TAGS was still delivering in the ratings, but yes, it wasn’t as good following Don Knotts’s exit. To be fair, the writers were running short on fresh ideas of what to do with his character.

Strangely enough even though the Barney shows were the best, it was the later shows that had the highest ratings. It was the number 1 show when it left the air. There is only a couple of other shows that can say that .

I have seen "The New Andy Griffith Show" which I believe only ran about 5 or 6 episodes. It definitely was a little bit off, however I love Lee Meriwether who played Andy Griffith's TV wife on this series. Only the debut episode (or pilot episode) had guest appearances done by Don Knotts, George Lindsey & Paul Hartman. However their characters had different names than those on the original show.

I never heard of that show !- and I loved the Andy Griffith show with Opie etc. But I've watched the reruns of that show, not the original series when it was on. They should run a few reruns of the NEW AG show now - maybe in a summer line up just to see how it would go over. I'll have to check it out on YT. Opie was cuteness personified, no other kid, except maybe Ralphie from A Christmas Story could compare to him and that's a stretch

It's all odd to me. That both shows were called "The Andy Griffith Show" but that was not his name in either show, but the name of the star. Other than the first name being the same. I know they did that back then, like Bob Newhart and Dick Van Dyke, but it just seems odd now. Like if you called Cheers The Ted Danson Show. And having characters from the original show reprise their roles, so they are the same characters that knew Andy Taylor, Visiting Andy Sawyer, But he's someone else, even though he looks exactly the same.

As I viewed the first couple of minutes I recall seeming one episode. Basically, the kids are talking about using drugs, Headmaster Andy tells them it is dangerous; one of the students responds "How do you know? If you have never tried it." Andy says, "I don't have to get hit by a car to know it will hurt me." (Or words to that effect.) The show wasn't on long enough to engage me however.
