I love how this episode was really about the process of writing and didn’t get into the gear side of it. It’s all interesting, but this one was really introspective. Ben is a true professional songwriter.
So insane to see two lead singers and songwriters who have made some of the most amazing sounding songs and stuck with it for so long. I just think about when a Jimmy song really hits hard and when a Death Cab song really hits hard and it gives me chills knowing these two figured it out over and over for so long. We are truly made to be like our Creator. It’s who we are.
This seems unreal. Been listening to his music high school and now I get to watch these. I'm hooked on YT, that's for sure. Can't get enough. Jim Adkins is a rare talent. Brilliant musician and song writer. My fav band since 2003 - Jimmy Eat World.
Jim, please get Claudio Sanchez from Coheed and Cambria on your podcast, and ask him how he decided to play A Praise Chorus live on an acoustic show, he explained that briefly when he played it but it will be great to hear the version with you in person, by the way, I enjoy a lot your interviews, keep the good vibes coming.
Great interview, as always. Really loved that final sentiment from Ben on songwriting. Put me in mind of something Paul Banks said in a Noisey doc of his 2012 solo album: "As a biological function of being alive, I'm gonna make music whether or not people get it or respond to it."
This encompasses two of my biggest influences as a songwriter. It’s like The Jetsons meet The Flintstones. I love it. Thank you so much for doing these, Jim!
Jim you and Jimmy eat world have been such an influence in life especially in my adolescence thank you so much you are one of the main reasons why I got into Rock music and decided to write music you changed my life for the better thank you so much
as songwriters that feel like conduits for something we channel from another place, or its just stuck in our subconscious, often its like removing a splinter. You keep picking at it even though its getting infected but you need to extract it because you cant see it but know its there...but the infection is more an unhappier place as we dwell on yanking it out. But what a payoff when we finally get there.
Totally relevant. I just finished writing a song today that took me a while and started out being about something else, but... it found itself. So thankful for this series. Thanks so much. Also, I really like your song “Stop” among many others.
Great show Jim! Love the podcast. I never would of thought 15 years ago I would be seeing something like this, but it's great. Keep up the great work. You've got fans down here in Mexico too.
Papa bless, what a great guest to have. Two of my favorite songwriters of all time! I’m digging this podcast, Jim. Dude if you get rivers or any of the dudes from Weezer that’d be so sick
Firstly: that last line from Jim nearly had be in tears. Secondly: Love that he mentioned Aussie band Jebediah like they’re a household name in the states.
Roughly 8:00 mark- I usually refer to it as the songs are being channeled to/through me (as fruity as that sounds). The subject matter of the lyrics are usually from personal experience, and the music could be something I've been working on for a few years, but I know it's not coming completely from me because of how quickly it's being pushed through. Sometimes I can't write it down fast enough.
Thanks for doing these, Jim. I could listen to you talk to artists all day. :) I especially like the writing/producing/recording/mixing talk.
Thank you for the great content Jim. I would love to see a tour of the studio and what gear you use to record!!!!!’ The guys from No Knife would be cool guests!!!
Great show, every guest you have had thus far has been amazing. I also happened to notice the rack of Chandler LTD 1’s and Germanium preamps in the background......I would do very bad things for that rack so rad!!!!! A studio / gear tour would be awesome.
It's really interesting that Ben sings in a totally different register than he speaks in. Like, usually you can kind of hear an artists singing voice in their speaking voice, but Ben doesn't even annunciate the same way.
Demo jams? I think a good question would be is there a demo jam that you listen to as a sort of hype song? Maybe a jam that gets your mood right or inspires you to follow the journey to the final conclusion of a completely different song with a completely different feel. Or is there a certain song/band/genre that you find yourself going back to, for some reason that helps motivate or inspire you. Love the show Always liked your music And you have the best guest so far Keep up the great work
Dear Mr. Jim Adkins, You please have to go talk to ..... MIKE KINSELLA pretty pretty pretty please????????? American Football, Owen, Cap’n Jazz, Their/They’re/There.... need I say more??????? Hayley Williams did a feature on their last LP. How awesome would it be for you to get them both together!!!!!!
Got a new rabbit.. we named it Happy. Fun to see it hop around the yard.. Do you ever find yourself wondering what rabbits are thinking about? Is it nothing? The Buddhists say that nothingness - Sunyata - is the prime objective.. Are rabbits Buddhists?
Talk about each other's favorite songs from your bands, talk about funny stories on tour in studio, talk about gear that wows you. I feel like every episode is the same it's always about writing.
The podcast I waited for my whole life
This podcast is the most educational music writing process podcast I've ever seen and it's amazing
I’ve always wanted a split album where these two bands cover each others songs. I hear it in my head.
Ooh, wow, that is an album I never knew I needed!
Have you heard Home Volume V by ben Gibbard and Andrew Kenny (from American Analog Set?) It's really good.
Petition for Jim, Ben and Chris Carrabba to make a supergroup album in the vein of Crosby, Stills & Nash
Intro keeps getting funnier! I love it! Also, Rivers Cuomo would be an awesome next guest!
Yeah so he can talk about how he used spreadsheets to write his soulless last handful of albums!
Robert Frost Bruh why the hate? I’m not a fan of their recent output either but White is one of their best albums period.
i saw weezer with jimmy eat world a few years ago. i’m pretty sure they’re good friends, so that would be really cool to see
I love how this episode was really about the process of writing and didn’t get into the gear side of it. It’s all interesting, but this one was really introspective. Ben is a true professional songwriter.
I love both!! Songwriting AND gear talk 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Jim is the man
M Kiefer Yes, for sure! I love both as well. This particular episode was different in a cool way.
So insane to see two lead singers and songwriters who have made some of the most amazing sounding songs and stuck with it for so long. I've been waiting for an electro-rock JEW album for 20 years! Make it happen Jim!
I Love That " Work " Riff, It Sound... Magical.. And Nostalgic..
This seems unreal. Been listening to his music high school and now I get to watch these. I'm hooked on YT, that's for sure. Can't get enough. Jim Adkins is a rare talent. Brilliant musician and song writer. My fav band since 2003 - Jimmy Eat World.

Two awesome interviews in one week?!? What is this CHRISTMAS?
I speak for everyone when I say we need a Death cab and Jimmy Eat World Tour.
Great interview, as always. Really loved that final sentiment from Ben on songwriting. Put me in mind of something Paul Banks said in a Noisey doc of his 2012 solo album: "As a biological function of being alive, I'm gonna make music whether or not people get it or respond to it."

Hi Jim, awesome content! Could you do a studio tour? :) That would be cool! Keep them coming.
I'm glad he mentioned The Get Up Kids because I just hope that Matt Prior or Jim Suptic will be on this show one day
YES. Matt Pryor would be an amazing addition!!!!!!
Every episode has been a home run so far. Such amazing guests and conversations!
Two of my all time favorite songwriters sitting down together. Thank you, thank you... This may be my brightest moment of 2020 yet.
Wow Jim and Ben😯😯My 2 favorite bands.
Based on this fender ad alone, I now assume Jim has either played, or plays D&D.
Hahaha
Jim you and Jimmy eat world have been such an influence in life especially in my adolescence thank you so much you are one of the main reasons why I got into Rock music and decided to write music you changed my life for the better thank you so much
Hearing Jim talk about how they spent there money! So smart.
These brings me so much joy! So happy you decided to make this project!

Are we going to see a collab?? Please??! Just one song ??? Lol
I second this.
Jim Adkins Musical Universe >>> Marvel Cinematic Universe
I listen to a lot of podcasts this ones quickly become one of my favorites
Simon Neil from Biffy Clyro would be a great guest too :)
Totally relevant. I just finished writing a song today that took me a while and started out being about something else, but... it found itself. So thankful for this series. Thanks so much. Also, I really like your song “Stop” among many others.
Most Excellent Podcast... Very Insightful. Two favourite songwriters from two of my favourite bands.
Awesome podcast!

Muchas gracias Marco
I love that you collaborated with two of your sons on the theme music.
Papa bless, what a great guest to have. Two of my favorite songwriters of all time! I’m digging this podcast, Jim. Dude if you get rivers or any of the dudes from Weezer that’d be so sick
Papa BLESS ;)
Firstly: that last line from Jim nearly had be in tears.
Secondly: Love that he mentioned Aussie band Jebediah like they’re a household name in the states.
The Jebediah / Jimmy Eat World split is a classic record for me!
I saw Jebediah open for JEW in 2000. Also the split EP.
I loosed a single tear upon experiencing the intro to this episode.
How many different cups of coffee will Jim be drinking in this episode. 8:18 minutes in we are up to 2.
Roughly 8:00 mark- I usually refer to it as the songs are being channeled to/through me (as fruity as that sounds). That opening intro reminds me of how much I live for the pick slide when they play 'the middle' live. I go crazy for that moment!
Enjoying these conversations here in South Africa!
Jim, you're absolutely killing it with these guests! Speaking of Rivers, any chance you could have a sit down with him too?
love all of these episodes. thank you Jim!
I can't with these Fender promos. 🤣 Haha This one was perfection.

Thanks for another great interview.
The SongExploder episode he's talking about is one of my all-time favorite podcast episodes. Rivers' writing method is so bonkers.
Great interview, i love hearing about others songwriting processes.
Love this podcast

Jeremy Enigk, too
It's really interesting that Ben sings in a totally different register than he speaks in.
Like, usually you can kind of hear an artists singing voice in their speaking voice, but Ben doesn't even annunciate the same way.
Good call.
Nah he sings close to his speaking voice, he uses falsetto a lot in songs though
I hear it.
0:00 what is the plugin you are using in the background?
I’ve been waiting for this one
If you can get Blake Schwarzenbach on here then I'd finally find happiness
Amazing show!

The two healthiest looking 40-something frontmen in power-pop. There's no way these guys drink... Not with necks like that.
PLEASE HAVE MATT PRYOR ON YOUR SHOW.
This is absolutely my new favorite youtube series. I would love to see a Tom DeLonge interview!
Talk about each other's favorite songs from your bands, talk about funny stories on tour in studio, talk about gear that wows you. I feel like every episode is the same it's always about writing.
Jim what's up with the crash cymbal hate
