Watercolor: My Colors and Glazing Technique Basics

  • In this video, I share the colors I've chosen for my palette and why I've chosen them. I also demonstrate and show the basics of the glazing technique with watercolor. Lastly, I show a book I've illustrated using watercolor and some original art from the book.
    Sorry about the shaky video from time to time. I am using a new camera mount that sits on my table. I tend to smack the table and shake the camera quite a bit. :)

    Here we are in 2022 and I -- a newbie to making art and jumping into the deep end of the pool with watercolor -- have found this vlog of yours from 2018 and want to offer a huge THANK YOU for your great explanation of what and why regarding your palette. Your pacing was excellent, your palette swatch sheet was reinforcing (and good for getting a screen shot of rather than having to write notes), and your demonstration of mixing versus glazing was super clear. Again, thanks!!!

    I've watched your layering in your notebook sketches and always think I need to learn and try more of the glazing. This is the first time I've ever come across an explanation and description of why glazing and the true amazing amount of depth you can get from it. I mostly do quicker and more urban sketch type pieces, which is probably why I haven't tried as much of it - for time issues, but this would explain why I feel like some of my colors seem more muddy and flat. It would also help me with getting more depth my faces and things. Thank-you for this. I now want that Batman book, just to explore your layering awesomeness.

    Wow.... never thought you could do that kind of art with watercolor. I'm just getting into watercolor and art for that matter ar age 33. Every painting or drawings mg I have done is with a o reference, only from the mind. My watercolor is mainly landscapes but completely made up. I wouldn't call them good but I have made a few I'm proud of, but only coming from my mind is what makes me excited... knowing this place would never exist at all if I didnt paint it.

    • @brianashmorestudio
      @brianashmorestudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Me too! Love Batman! Right!... you don't need a TON of colors to produce good paintings. You can mix almost everything you need from the 3 primaries. It helps to have a good earth tone like Burnt Sienna and maybe a purple and green (glowing versions of those two can be a bit tough to mix, sometimes).

    Brian, Thanks for sharing your colors. I am a museum educator, and due to the virus, I am having to teach online. I actually use Prang student watercolors in the tin, just because they are easier to use for kids. They actually work very well. Normally, I use either Windsor-Newton or Daniel Smith in my palette , depending on the color I want to use.

      Eve The Craft Lady Hello Eve, Exactly! You definitely have to think like process printing when glazing... as in, making sure you are using the right intensities of each color as they go down on the paper. Of course, you can always keep glazing colors over the top to correct the color. No so with process printing. Ha ha. Thanks for the sub!

    I appreciate your humor. I really appreciate your videos!!! It's refreshing to have info. given without big "hula" and/or "ego". I certainly don't want to offend anyone. I'm nearly 60, taught JH 36 yrs.. guess I've witnessed/dealt with children's attitudes changing to "all about/for me". It's sad, really, they'll miss out on joy of giving/helping/caring for others.. Still many great kiddos.

      Thanks! Ha, ha! Yeah, I'm sure lots of people probably didn't make it through the bendy brush joke and turned off the video. Having taught for 36 years, I'm sure you've witnessed the whole gamut of behavior from students. It is sad to see things turning the way they are but there are definitely still a lot of great kids out there. I've been very encouraged by the kinds of kids my boys have played with on soccer teams, etc.

      @@brianashmorestudio I definitely agree! There’s some really great kids. I was very I’ll and just worn out when I wrote this 3 years ago. A superintendent called to see if I would teach in a small school (k-12 in one building) and I loved being around the kiddos again!! I think the admin has the biggest influence on some of the behavior. Majority really want rules and people who care.

    I must try using staining colours in order to layer better. I often put some granulating colour down and the second layer just lifts it off. Though I tend to agree with Bruce MacEvoy on Handprint ‘luminosity myth’ that light doesn’t pass back through the paint matter and make it glow more.

    I WHAT A BENDY GRUSH TOOOOOOOO!!! LOL Wonderful video from start to finish and yes, I watched the whole thing. I was wondering when you were going to offer us a rubber chicken for lunch.
    I to am getting back into watercolor painting, but I’ve been away for longer than the others. Last time I painted I was a senior in high school (graduated back in 65) and I am well into my senior years again (I’ll be 73 in May) and picking up my old dusty brushes again. Weeeeell trying to. My tubes of W&N watercolors have all hardened so I have to reconstructed them. W&N told me they wount have the same vibrancy as new ones, but that’s ok for now....neither do I. LOL Very much like your videos, keep up the great work. BTW, I was taught the same thing in the beginning. Only 4 colors, Yellow, Red, Blue and Payne’s Gray.

      Hey Scott!! I wish I could help you out with getting a bendy brush but they are pretty hard to come by. 😂 Loved your comment!! It's never too late to get back into painting... that's one thing I love about art. By the way, my vibrancy is diminishing, as well. Wisdom is on the rise but vibrancy is becoming a rarer and rarer commodity. Ha, ha. Thanks so much for the support and the comment!

      Scott C - I'm 66 and started to paint again last year. The paints will be fine because I found an old paint box with 5 colours still clinging on in there - it was my uncles that he used when he was at the Glasgow At School before WW2
      So I gave them a spritz and they worked beautifully! LOL!

      anne percival I'm using a Silver Black Velvet Oval Wash brush in this video. They handle very well. Both Synthetic and natural squirrel hair are combined to make a brush that has spring to it but can also hold a lot of water.

    Very nice explanation Mr Brian and along with your work. I am actually a photographer but I like watercolour and I am a fresher to the medium. I understood the orange tone which is a mix of two primary colours but can you kindly explain why did you need glazing for the Grey tone for the background of the cover of the DC comic Batman. Why do you need a yellow wash initially in order to attain the final Payne's Grey tone. Please can you reply ?
    Greetings from India.

      @brianashmorestudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kumai, Thanks much for your comment! I don’t always use glazing when I work but I think I can explain it in this instance. If I use a yellow wash under all the other colors (even cool colors), it helps to unify the color scheme since all colors show a bit of the same yellow. Also, it can warm up cooler areas that might read too cool for the overall look of the painting without the yellow under painting.

      @@brianashmorestudio Mr Brian thank you very much for your prompt reply. I do understand now how different it is from the underpainting. Also I like your illustrations as I am a great fan of DC comics myself. I grew up reading those fancy comics along with lots of others. They had extraordinary illustrations.

      @@brianashmorestudio Thank you. Don't know why mine was so blue but after letting it sit open to the air it has turned to a beautiful shade of blue green...mostly green. Mixed with just a touch of prussian blue I got a great turquiose. Mixed with burnt umber I get a deep dark green so it must be right now. Pretty color enyhoo.

      Rachel Z Hi Rachel, I use Arches or Saunders Waterford 140 lb cold press paper. I’m sure any professional quality watercolor paper should handle glazing without much problem.

    • @frankbissell1920
      @frankbissell1920 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can, also acrylic medium. Use gesso to coat your paper or canvas first. Try acrylic inks and liquid acrylics too!

    • @brianashmorestudio
      @brianashmorestudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chicko, So sorry for the late, late reply. You could definitely thin down acrylics but you might have trouble if you are looking for painting watercolors. I would say that, to start, don't skimp on paper ( I would try Arches cold press) but maybe try more affordable brushes and paints like Winsor and Newton Cotman colors and good synthetic brushes.

    • @brianashmorestudio

      Coldpaint Hi! The non-glazing method would be the method of mixing all colors on the palette instead of layering them, individually, on the paper. Does that make sense?
