This is a really clear video and it’s great that you answer all the questions so if I get stuck I can probably find the answer here already or ask here and likely get an answer - this gives me a lot of confidence to have a go, I think I’m gonna try it!
Great pattern, great video, great shirt. Thanks so much for making such a top quality pattern. And you were right, so many custom tailored things in this shirt, I learned a ton about putting out a top quality shirt for my husband. Thanks again!!!
My son purchased a similar pattern and asked me to make it. I've never sewn a shirt before and was stuck on how to do the collar. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO! It helped me to make sense of what I was reading. Can't wait to get started on it and I will definitely be using this video as a reference for each step of the way. Thanks a million!
The best video , I always go back to it, most other videos are not showing the parts clearly enough and not making the process seem doable but you video lays everything so neatly and makes the process understandable despite its complexity!
My first time sewing a shirt! Really came out nice, although it was too small. I wish that I had looked closer at the size chart vs. measurements; I needed two sizes up from what I buy RTW. But my niece saw it just after I hemmed up the bottoms and thought that it was cute when she tried it on, so I put the buttons on the other side and gave her the piece(!) Now I can make another one in my size... and probably another after that. The video was super helpful -- especially for the "burrito" pouch fold and collar attachment.
Have just ordered this pattern for my husband can’t wait to get started. I am making the perfect tunic at the moment very pleased so far the tutorial was a dream a great help.
Very instructive and easy to follow. Combined with the written instrucitons on this shirt I made the Kid's version pretty easily. There are some nice touches also - pleats, pocket, side slits, yoke. All good.
@@Wardrobebyme Also made an adult's version, which was not quite so fiddly as the kid's version. Looks good. Not quite as baggy as some designs but still very happy with it.
Great video! My only issue is the fabric used makes it hard to see what you're doing since it acts like camouflage. I still want to get the pattern and give it a try!
Just finished mine ! Super helpful the video - Very nice pattern but the size are on the smaller end - choose 1 size bigger ~ I tried to biggest one and still was a little small for my need...but overall very good !! Thank yoU !
Thanks for doing this video it really helped me make this shirt. I watched the video first and that gave me confidence that I could do it. It came out great and it was so helpful to follow along step by step. I am a visual learner. It is a perfect fit 😃👏🎉 I just got your new pattern Tropicana for women and I hope you do a video for that one too 🤞
@Just Joan - check thrift stores. I've often gotten a bag of misc. sewing 'stuff' (even if there is only one thing in the bag that I am interested in). I've seen these many times, mixed in with ancient bias tape, etc. I just throw out the rest and I've only spent 25 cents to a dollar.
Good morning! I love this pattern so much and am sooooo excited to really get it down. I have never hand sewn before so the hand sewing part has been tricky for me so far. What type of hand stitch are you using? I will find some tutorials on that type of hand stitch and start practicing ASAP!
Where can I purchase the tools that you use to make this shirt like the ironing card? I am going to attempt to make this looks very simple with your tutelage thank you. Excellent video.
This is the reference for the camp shirt as well but it’s not exactly the same pattern. My brain seems to get lost😅 Would love to have a tutorial specifically for the camp shirt if you guys plan to do one🙏🏽
I might have missed it but after playing pattern Tetris I’m using a plain fabric for my inside yoke.when I do the burrito method according to the video is it the yoke on the bottom or the top of the pile in the video that is the outside on on show. Thanks
What interfacing do you recommend for this shirt? I sew mostly bags, so I have a ton of Wovenfuse (fusible woven interfacing similar to Pellon SF-101, but slightly more substantial). Will that work? I've never sewn a shirt before, but my husband sacrificed his beloved tropical shirts to make masks for healthcare workers (I could only find girly fabric, and I was sure there were male nurses out there who didn't want flowers on their masks), so I'm sewing him a new one for his birthday.
@Divergentdesignz, I made a test one from an old sheet and didn't use interfacing and it looked fine. I've now made a proper one from linen and used interfacing, and it does give more structure to the collar and more stability to the front facing and buttonholes.
I finally bought the pattern and cut out all the pieces. I usually sew bags and heavy duty items can you recommend a thread type and needle size for a first time shirt maker?
Hi there, assuming that you are using regular weight cotton or something like it, You should use a universal needle size 70-80., together with a regular poly thread. Nothing heavy like what you use for bags, etc.
What do the notch symbols look like on your pattern? There was no guide and the traditional pattern symbols on non-pdf patterns look like triangles, but your pattern has no triangles. Apologies for being a newbie.
Does the bottom button hole go horizontally instead of vertically for a reason? I would guess for ease when sitting, but just want to be certain that I understand. Thank you.
When you sew the under collar to the “top”, is the “top” the collar piece? 🤔 When I’ve tried to sew the two together, they don’t match up. I have double checked that I cut both the pieces to the right size as well.
The under collar is smaller than the top and cut on bias and thus stretchy. This prompts the too collar to be slightly pulled under and makes it lay better.
@@Wardrobebyme see I cut it an inch too short in the front where the fold over for the buttons are supposed to go should I just add another piece and connect it

Very well explained.
Thank you so much for a great video. Just what I needed was the visual to understand how the burrito-roll yoke was done. Great shirt pattern also!
Love the video tutorial! Could not have done the collar sep without the visual. So very well done!

I am desperate to know where you got that pressing guide! I need one in the worst way. Also I love your video!
I got the guide years ago, but it's similar to this www.supermart.com/seams-right-by-nancy-zieman/

you can sew with the machine. The handstitch is just a simple pick-stitch. Nothing fancy.
Where can I purchase the tools that you use to make this shirt like the ironing card? I am going to attempt to make this looks very simple with your tutelage thank you. Excellent video.
It's a standard tool. My guess is that you can find it in most fabric shops
where can you buy one of those guides you use to fold / iron the seam allowance on the pocket?
In any fabric shop. It's from Prym
This is the reference for the camp shirt as well but it’s not exactly the same pattern. My brain seems to get lost😅 Would love to have a tutorial specifically for the camp shirt if you guys plan to do one🙏🏽
The difference is that the tropical shirt has a Yoke, which the camp shirt doesn 't. Everything else is the same.

iT'S DESCRIBED IN STEP 5 OF THE INSTRUCTIONS.

My Aloha shirt has a matching mask. Just Sayin'.
You just need a light weight interfacing. Ask in the fabric shop. They will have a sellection that work with the fabric at hand.
@@jimstarwood - That's lovely. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure we'll all sleep better tonight knowing this.
I've purchased your pattern and love the video tutorial. But I'm not sure if the seem is included in the pattern or if I have to add it???
It's included!
If I don't have interfacing can I still achieve this look. I purchased the pattern already.
To get a nice finished collar and front edge you need interfacing.
@Divergentdesignz, I made a test one from an old sheet and didn't use interfacing and it looked fine. I've now made a proper one from linen and used interfacing, and it does give more structure to the collar and more stability to the front facing and buttonholes.
...and it's a really great pattern, especially with the video help. I have fabric to make another 2 for my husband !
You really need interfacing to achieve a nice, crisp collar.
Thank you

Hi do I have to serge the edges of all pieces first for the fraying? Thank you!
I recommend doing it as you go along.
May I know if I want to do flat felled seam, how should I make changes to the seam allowance?
Yes, you need extra seam allowance.
I now have the pattern. Is the seam allowance included or needs to be added? Thanks
It's included
Thank❤

How much fabric is needed on average to make this shirt? I want to get a custom fabric made. Will 2m x 1.1m suffice for size L/XL?
You can check the measurements here. wardrobebyme.com/collections/mens-sewing-patterns/products/tropical-shirt-sewing-pattern
@@Wardrobebyme thanks. Turns out I didn't look hard enough!
Just wondered if I need to order a particular size pattern or are they all available on the download? Thanks
You get all sizes.

It's a little line perpendicular to the edge.
Does the bottom button hole go horizontally instead of vertically for a reason? I would guess for ease when sitting, but just want to be certain that I understand. Thank you.
Yes, thats why
Thats correct!
Just cut all the pieces, should / could I overlock all the edges before starting sewing?
Yes you can, but skip the collar and the pocket. The seam will show through to the right side when you press the shirt.
Thank you!
Wish me luck! :P
I’ll show you the results when I finish.
@@Sarah-di8vy Yes please 🙂
