i'm at the end of restoring a 411G, many thanks to you. i KNEW i should have looked for an Andy Tube video to figure out why i could not slide the bobbin slide cover on (from the wrong direction). the cover was off the machine when i bought it. thank you Andy!

I’m so happy to have found your video how to fix the slide plate. I thought I had broken it and was going to take my machine in to get repaired. I just fixed it myself following your instructions. Thank you so much!
Thank you so very much for the time you invest in sharing your skills, by video. You are an inspiration to me. You have taught me how to repair and use my vintage Singer sewing machines. You saved me countless lost hours, because I was able to watch this video, before I replaced my bobbin plate.

@@xyz12345457 that's what i was doing!!!! LOL, finally came here figuring Andy will show, and he did 🙂 i was trying to loosen (unsuccessfully) the screw at the front of the machine that holds the spring clip in, already partially stripped. i even looked at the spring clip, thinking the 'points' were pointing the wrong way to allow them to enter the groove from the back. anyway, saved again!
I can't thank you enough for posting this. I've never seen a slide plate go in in reverse like this and I was pulling my hair out, reading my manual, watching other TH-cam videos and finally came across this, thank you!

You didn't give us a lot of needles chatter, you just got right to it, explained it at a speed that I could take in using words that I could understand and images that were clear and close enough to be helpful. Thank you so much for taking the time to fill a void for many of us! By the way, my cover plate is now back where it belongs.
Thanks very much, Wayne. One of the nicest comments I have received over the years. Always trying to improve my presentations. Hope to hear from you again in the future.

This comment is one of the best I ever read. It's kind of you to take the time to acknowledge my efforts and it justifies the time and effort it took to make my nearly 600 videos. Good luck and take care.
For people who may have arrived here as I have, looking for a solution to a really stubborn slide plate, the answer was to tighten that screw at 4:15 to make sure the clip is really secured in place. Thanks, Andy! I went ahead and cleaned my plate out as you suggested while I was at it and everything is moving smoothly!

Great vid! It I’m pretty mechanically minded and it took me a minute to figure it out on an old 66. I bet this will come in handy for many years to come. Info like can be invaluable in a time when hardly anyone is passing down the craft to the next generation.
Thank you for the nice comment. I see there are over 35K views on the video now so I'm glad I made it. Once you figure it out it makes sense, but it was anti-intuitive to slide it on from behind. Thanks for watching my channel.

@@andytubesewing1953 thank you sir, I inherited one of my grandmother's machine, it's a singer model 5825 without the manual. Fortunately, the other day I found the manual and a parts list with pictures online and was able to download them. I prefer paper but everything is online. I do have a question for you...can you tell me if there is a specific range of model numbers that are somewhat identical to my model? I don't want to have to shun all videos that have nothing to do with my model? Do you see what I'm asking?
@@Nobodyandthensome I consider your 5825, made in 1994, to be contemporary, and 20 to 50 years newer than the models I work on. It has many smaller plastic parts and came in 6, 8, 10 & 12 stitch pattern models, made in Brazil, Taiwan & a few in France. Kind of the new "Universal World-Wide" models. I don't know much about them. You see on the first page of your Instruction Manual they list several model numbers. The same with the parts diagram manual. In general, your model has an internal motor with a belt-drive, a vertical gear-driven shaft to the bottom pulleys, and a timing belt. A cam stack with a few pattern discs on it. There are a number of vintage machines with similar mechanics; 353, 347, 413, 416, 418, 457. They can have a similar vibrating bracket and feed system but with minor variances. They all have a tension unit that works the same way, metal discs to squeeze the needle thread to create thread tension, but may have slightly different tension parts on the assemblies. That's the thing with sewing machines, the principles are mostly the same. The needle bar goes up & down, the hook goes around & around ( or oscillates) and the two are timed together. They have a bobbin of thread in the hook system to wrap with the needle thread to make the lock-stitch. If they are zigzag models the needle bar has some type of driving arm, moved by the cam stack, that makes the needle swing back & forth (zigzag). If you get the basic principles of how the machine works you will be able to work (and sew) on it. So, some of the model numbers I mentioned could help you with your 5825, and a motor is a motor and foot pedal a foot pedal. I've had people with much older machines and almost new machines of many different brands contact me to say that a certain Singer video I made helped them fix their timing, or feed dog, or zigzag system.
@@andytubesewing1953 well, sir, I just want yo say thank you so much for all that information, so helpful and add me to that list of people you talked about that you've helped. Just with this particular video, learning how to take that plate off made a world of difference. After being able to take that off and knowing a few basics I was able to find out what was wrong with my machine. You see, I couldn't figure out why the bobbin thread wasn't catching and I was having a hard time believing it was the timing. When I finally got the plate off, it helped me to figure out how some other things were supposed to come off. After seeing and getting some understanding, I noticed that the race had some lint that was stuck to it in one small area on the inside. I had to scrape that off to see if that's what the problem was. I was a lil surprised that that tiny mess made the difference. It was pushing the black bobbin case upward and preventing the upper thread from going where it needed to go. That's it. I'm just really glad that that's all it was. I'm also happy to know I can trust my gut with this. Hope you stay well and safe in this crazy world. Your knowledge and presence is much needed.
I am so thankful for your page I just got a singer 6212C got that plate taken off could not get it back on and I had no idea what I was doing wrong. So thankful for your page. Your videos are very easy to follow thank you.
You are very welcome Tony. It was a real puzzler to me. It took me quite a while to figure it out so just had to share it the videos. Not my best production haha but it gets the point across. Thanks for the nice comment and for watching my channel
I've spent an hour trying to get that thing back on, thanks for this video. The bobbin mechanism had jammed, I got the jam fixed but put the top part of the bobbin by the sewing needle back on and was trying to put it back with that on, now I see that was impossible, and it's not as easy as it is a 1950's Singer I can't ge tto the spring like you can on this model. Many thanks for this video I know what to do now.
@@andytubesewing1953 After working on for some time yesterday getting nowhere not knowing what I was doing I fixed it this afternoon easily after watching your video.
Thank you so much. My plate came off (I have no idea how I managed it), and I just couldn't get it back on. Thanks to your thoughtfulness, the plate is now back on my trusty 401.
And you made mine by taking time to comment! It's counter-intuitive the way it goes on. I'm glad you found the video. Don't be a stranger; I have 500+ more. Happy sewing.
My husband purchased an industrial sewing machine so he could repair tent tops. I want to use it for upholstery because my Singer didn't like the last project. I purchased a magnetic seam guide for the industrial machine. I decided to check if I could use it with my Singer, so I opened the cabinet but didn't pull the machine up as I was just checking to see if the bed of the machine was metal. The magnet on the guide is quite powerful and rotated and attached to the plate as apparently it is the only metal near where I had the guide. When I pulled the guide the plate came with it. I didn't know how it came off because I had the machine still in the cabinet. Your video helped because we were trying to slide it back on the opposite way.
I love this story! It was kind of you to share it and quiet my mind from thinking about magnets and slide plates. I don't sew and had no idea about magnetic seam guides. Thanks very much.
You're very welcome, John. Model 99K is such an impressive machine. I have all of my 20 repair videos for it in a playlist here if you find any more issues. th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKIIUgkEujqHc9iNWN9NPW2Z.html Happy sewing then, and take care.
Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for. I have a singer model 7105, with this type of slide plate. I was able to get it off, but I couldn’t figure out how to get it back on, I didn’t want to break something.
I struggled for hours trying to fit the plate back ...absolute nightmare! Eventually I managed by slipping a pin under each end of the spring clip, to keep it open enough to slip it into place. There was some colourful and creative language used, I tell ya!
That sounds a lot like my first experience trying to figure that thing out. My wife was so happy he said you should make a little video haha. Congratulations on your success and thanks for watching my channel
@@andytubesewing1953 I'm like there has to be a trick into putting it back, I tried to take off the screw, bend it a little the metal, after all that I went to your video, and silly me. Thanks again! Great job there! 👌
Thank you so much or this video! I was trying everything and pretty much coming to the conclusion that you have done, b ut I needed confirmation that I was doing it right. 401a is happy again!
The tailor who was my 404s previous owner, I think she broke off the crimped tip on one side of the bobbin plate so it could be removed more easily. I can also see a lot of small gouges from someone lifting the soft metal horizontal edge with the small flat screw driver I found in the drawer.
Hi! So glad to find your channel, as I inherited my mother-in-law's model 500 just a few weeks ago. I watched your regular maintenance video as a guide to follow along with the original owners manual, which was so helpful! A question about parts - where do you find them? The right side of the slide plate hinge has broken off, so that only the left side is functional (still OK for sewing). Also, the nose plate is missing the hinge piece at the bottom (the little rod). Otherwise, the machine has been well used and loved for decades and runs like new.
I'm glad you did find my channel. By slide plate hinge I think you are talking about part No. 172016 "Bed Slide Spring" and that is one of the rare parts that you can actually find new. Here are a couple sellers: www.ebay.com/itm/SLIDE-PLATE-SPRING-172016-fits-SINGER-401-500-600-620-626-628/292096928599?hash=item4402556b57:g:nikAAOSwz5ZZtvjx www.sewingpartsonline.com/slide-plate-spring-singer-172016.aspx?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIp--Sx7yY6gIVHCCtBh3t5w1vEAQYASABEgJUQfD_BwE Usually, you must find a used part for sale on eBay or Bonanza. The little rod is the "Face Plate Hinge Pin" part No. 170032 and you can find them new and used. One example: www.ebay.com/itm/Singer-Hinge-Pin-170032-Fits-400-500-600-700-Class-Machines-See-Description-/333298652683 I usually just cut a finishing nail to size and a drop of super glue to hold it. If the little arm that holds it is broken or cracked I repair with JB WELD SteelStik www.jbweld.com/product/steelstik-epoxy-putty-stick When dry is can be filed, sanded and painted if needed. A playlist that may interest you if ever needed. th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKLiDl9yFTP6mJgQmz5lj4NO.html You may have seen this playlist, but the first 2 videos are about your bobbin winder system, which often has a broken spring and worn friction ring (rubber tire) Thanks for asking about parts and for watching my channel. @@andytubesewing1953 Thank you for the detailed how-too reply with the great links! Looking forward to exploring your videos further - sewing machines (and sewing, for that matter) are a completely new adventure for me - your tutorials are much appreciated!
Thank you for this video. I have an old Singer 533 and the slide plate only slides so far towards the sewer. Looking at other videos the plates that I see slide even further to expose the bobbin completely. In my case the slide plate catches on the left side right at the point before exposing the slide hook for the bobbin thread. Mechanically there is something there that seem to catch the back side of the plate underneath. I don't know if it is normal and certainly the way you demonstrated in how to take the slide plate off helps in cleaning out the grooves on the plate. But for normal work during sewing, I would think the plate would slide out to expose the further open to make it easier to access the bobbin holder. Any suggestions would help.. and much thanks to your video. It certainly makes sense to know how the machine is designed so to engage the problems better. Thanks in advance.
Your machine has a small "rocker" lever to raise the needle plate locking pin upward so you can remove the needle plate. When you are sliding the bobbin cover slide plate towards you it is normal to feel a little resistance when a part on the slide plate comes in contact with the lever. Normally you continue to move the slide towards you and the lever actuate and raises that pin on the left side of the needle plate. If your plate is coming in contact with the lever and stopping it usually means the locking pin for the needle plate or the actuating lever that raises the pin or the edges of the needle plate are stuck. Most of the time it is dried oil and gunk. Page 7 of the instruction manual describes changing the needle plate and the rising pin. Page 58 describes removing the bobbin case. You may need to lift the needle plate by hand to get it off the pin but I'm worried you will bend something. Maybe it's better if you remove the bottom covers and take a look at that lever and pin from the bottom. Page 57 has instructions to remove the bottom plate. The pin has a spring around it to hold the needle plate down. You should be able to see the lever and pin and clean it or use penetrating oil to soften the dried up stuff and get a little movement. I have seen the edges of the needle plate almost glued to the frame around it by dried oil. When those parts are clean they work very well with sliding the slide plate back all the way to pop up the locking pin and lift out the needle plate. If you need a copy of the Instruction Manual it is available free in PDF format from Singer at this link: www.singer.com/search/support?title=533
Thank you soooo much! I have my mother's Singer 403A. I had to order a Slide Plate Spring and just emailed Sewing Parts Online.com to see if someone could walk me through replacing it. But I think I can now do it with your wonderful video!
N Warner I have just received my new spriing from SPO, and was wondering how I was going to replace it on my 401A. I found this, Andy’s video and the perfect solution to my need! Thank you Andy, you are a great teacher! Roy Lewis Buffalo NY
Just checked out the little screw in the front which holds the spring plate. It appears to be made of very soft metal and it won't budge either way. Any thoughts on how to loosen it in order to replace the spring plate?
I have had the same problem. My best method was to spray it generously with WD-40 or Liquid Wrench, then heat it well with a hair dryer. Let it cool; even use ice if you are in a hurry. It seemed to me the expansion/contraction allowed me to " break" it free. I had a very dirty Model 401A once that I had to do this about 4 times before it finally came loose. You are correct that the screw is "soft" metal, and easy to strip the top off of. Be sure and turn it to the right. Le us know if this works for you, and thank for the question. Good Luck!

Hi Andy, I have to adjust the bobbin placement with the black spring as you showed me more than usual. I am working with salvaged jeans and going over folded heavy seams when it happens. I think I also got some needle-plate hits but I don’t know if those were already there. It makes a bit of a racket when the bobbin thread gets all caught and the wheel locks! Maybe I should use longer stitches? Any advice?

Great vid! It I’m pretty mechanically minded and it took me a minute to figure it out on an old 66. I bet this will come in handy for many years to come. Info like can be invaluable in a time when hardly anyone is passing down the craft to the next generation.

Another comment offering sincere thanks for this video! My brain went on the fritz while cleaning my Singer 600 and ended up with the slide plate in my hand and no idea how to get it back on. Your explanation made it easy and quick to get it back on in the first try!

Dang that screw was tiny. I was kind of afraid to take the smaller one out anyway.😂

You are welcome, Anna.( I will be wondering about that magnet, lol. )
Thank you for the comment.

Thank you so much for showing how to do this,
Very welcome. It's tricky little thing. I finally figured out you put it on backwards. Thanks for taking time to comment. Good luck!
Here are a couple sellers: www.ebay.com/itm/SLIDE-PLATE-SPRING-172016-fits-SINGER-401-500-600-620-626-628/292096928599?hash=item4402556b57:g:nikAAOSwz5ZZtvjx

Usually, you must find a used part for sale on eBay or Bonanza.
The little rod is the "Face Plate Hinge Pin" part No. 170032 and you can find them new and used. One example: www.ebay.com/itm/Singer-Hinge-Pin-170032-Fits-400-500-600-700-Class-Machines-See-Description-/333298652683
I usually just cut a finishing nail to size and a drop of super glue to hold it. If the little arm that holds it is broken or cracked I repair with JB WELD SteelStik www.jbweld.com/product/steelstik-epoxy-putty-stick When dry is can be filed, sanded and painted if needed.
A playlist that may interest you if ever needed. th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKLiDl9yFTP6mJgQmz5lj4NO.html
You may have seen this playlist, but the first 2 videos are about your bobbin winder system, which often has a broken spring and worn friction ring (rubber tire) Thanks for asking about parts and for watching my channel.

@@andytubesewing1953 Thank you for the detailed how-too reply with the great links! Looking forward to exploring your videos further - sewing machines (and sewing, for that matter) are a completely new adventure for me - your tutorials are much appreciated!
@@timandcheryldrewes9582 Sure, you are welcome. I hope you enjoy your "new" Rocketeer.

Good Luck!
Thank you so much! was very helpful video!!😊😊
just put a motor on the singer 66 my uncle gave me and couldn't figure out how to get the plate back on 😐
Great! Glad you found this, and congrats on the new motor too! Some old Model 66 seem like they will sew forever.
Thankyou for this!! I couldn’t get mine back on and thought I broke it

Any advice?
Thanks so much. You made my day!
and now you've made mine. You're welcome and thanks back at you. Happy sewing.
