Initially it started as a thing that was only in the German dub of American Dad! That way they could replace some of the upsetting Hitler and Holocaust references with somewhat less upsetting references to the brutal Communist oppression of half their country.
Sometimes I think the writers do too.

You know I actually felt bad for Klaus because of that childhood trauma, before he became a fish, but he should at least realize that sharing is caring, and it was completely unnecessary for him to turn Stan, Francine, Hayley, and Jeff into the characters from his childhood show, and if we're being honest, people are too old for something like this now since they seem too babyish, I mean I already outgrown shows from Nick Jr., Disney Junior, and PBS Kids.

Communist East Germany was something else
Actually we had Sesame Street (Sesamstraße) in (west)germany. But with totally different characters than the americans. As an east german, Klaus would have grown up with Brummkreisel, Hoppla and the eastern version of Sandmännchen. To be honest, even as a west german, I found eastern kids TV way better. Believe it or not, way less propaganda and manipulation and way more artistic integrity.

@@onionbubs386 Es gab nie einen Big Bird in Deutschland.Wir hatten damals einen großen Bären namens Samson. Heute gibt es hauptsächlich nur noch ein Schaf, ein Pferd und natürlich die Elmo Plage. Big Bird kam nur in amerikanischen original Einspielern vor. Da haben sie ihn aber in Bibo unbenannt.
