@@willsmith39 I was not complaining about paying in to the NHS. I just don't understand why there are other state systems which spend a similar amount as the UK, but get more Doctors and hospital beds per head of population and better survival rates for serious diseases. The NHS is one of the most important and wonderful services ever created. Saved my life at 42 and I’m still here at coming up to 75. I was able to continue working and paying tax and NI into the system. I’d have probably died in the USA. I’ve been diabetic since my mid-30s and NHS medics cared for me. I’m now in Spain and the Spanish NHS has also taken great care of me. Had bladder cancer recently and was operated on x2 within weeks. Now about the start 5-weeks of chemotherapy and all being well, will be cancer free. The health services in both countries are under intense pressure but I can’t praise them highly enough. Keep strong Eddie.

Hard to compare the NHS of 33 years ago to the struggling NHS of today. A good public healthcare system is a fragile thing. It requires balance between funding, rate of hire of skilled people (a country can only train so many health care professionals in a given timeframe), population growth and general public health.
It's full of good, caring people, struggling under a system where balance has been lost and continues to tip against it. Nowhere near enough professionals coming in, population growth outstripping resources and a growing portion of the population that are unemployed and net consumers.

NHS is broken I should know I work for them.Things came to light during COVID. In the Trust I work for there are approx 20000 Staff . Only 11000 are front line the rest are Admin. !!!
So while I and my fellow co workers were at first scared as we did not know the outcome of our health and wellbeing treating Patients these Admin workers were at home being paid for doing sweet FA. So in a nutshell the NHS is to top heavy. That's where the real money is being wasted.
Someone has to take responsibility for that.
I am a human being - I care about all life - if anyone needs treatment they should get it who ever they are . People forget that Foreign Citizens are sent to the UK for treatment by their Governments But it's Paid in full by those Governments .
Yes some slip through the Net but not as many as you or others think.
Eddy your back on form and I am glad that your enduring Treatment - another month and it's done . Happy Days to follow.

The UK does't have an NHS crisis it has a population crisis in which far too many foreigners are putting pressures on public services and housing. During the EU referendum debate in 2015 Nigel Farage pointed out that foreigners from Africa and the Indian sub continent were travelling to the UK for free health treatment. He was called a racist for telling inconvenient truths. Nothing has changed since that debate. Simple fact is unless the UK gets a grip with uncontrolled migration the country is done for. NHS stands for National Health Service not World Health Service.

It's the same trick that you all believed with the Brexit debacle.
Things were never going to improve after Brexit but you were led to believe otherwise and the madman you elected got off Scot free while the other was living in France.

The people or elected people promised and took our money too support those promises. They simply need to be held accountable. Instead of admitting their promises, which can not be supported, they deliver a product of C- quality. Imagine an Airline selling tickets for travel on different classes of planes: The A version we guarantee it will get there but you pay. The B version will likely arrive and the C version is hit or miss. NHS applies this corporate business plan to your life.

I think you would have been better off getting expat insurance instead of travel insurance then you'd still be in Thailand now and would have got your op and radiotherapy in a nice private hospital.

In Ireland 55eur to see gp and blood tests 15eur, A+E visit 100eur .(no going straight to a and e to avoid gp fee) This definitely cuts out "doctoring" for no reason. Hospital though free. Like nhs a system close to collapse. But too be honest this is old topic and no real fix. Most GPs worth their salt on first flight to Australia when they qualify. We have a similar problem with our universal health care in Canada, run by each province. Now anytime I have ever needed it, our healthcare has come through for me with flying colours - a couple of cancer treatments plus a serious illness when I was in university. So for me, only using our services in an emergency, a real emergency, not a fake one like the flu, I am totally satisfied with our healthcare - in fact - it was fantastic for me! No wait, world-class specialists and treatment, zero cost to me, other than what I paid in taxes. However, I will tell you why our emergency departments are jammed - because they are being abused by people who should never be going to emerg - they should be staying at home! Like the elderly who are just lonely and have a slight cold - true story. When my son was born I had to hang out at the hospital for a couple days and I saw so many people who shouldn't have been there - but they were selfishly using up resources others more in need - NEEDED!! So that is problem A. Problem B is that we need to allow private enterprise to organize and manage at least some procedures better done at clinics than at hospitals, such as routine MRI's and CAT scans. As it is, we have a shortage of these machines and it is cheaper for hospitals to send some patients to the US than to do this in Canada - that is incredible and proves how inefficient government can be at organizing and conducting business processes. A mixed system like in France and Australia has both better health outcomes and lower costs, to say nothing of much shorter wait times. But political obstruction in Canada prevents this transition. So our health care system problems in my country are an own goal. In general, it is still far preferable to the mess that is US health care, but it IS deteriorating. Just requires political will to fix - not dollars.

NHS is a bottomless pit. Budget about 170bn. One thing I agree with pm, and only one, is it needs reform. There is huge waste and I say that from countless visits to my mother in hospital. The cancer care is incredible. Seen it first hand. Absolutely incredible. Things like hip replacements etc are not good. My father paid for 2. It's a question of resources. Do you spent it on cancer or elsewhere. I've no idea. Of course we could all pay more, but rather than moaning about NHS we'd moan about taxes. Who knows??

The NHS is not perfect and some may say inefficient but it still delivers low cost effective treatment - it isn't there to stiff patients like the American system where profit trumps health outcomes.
