Most of my grandparents passed away when I was young or before I was even born.
But I’ll remember this of my grandfather ...when I was a little girl I always wanted a horse for my Barbie dolls...but didn’t get it.
When I was grown (20yrs old) my grandfather was dying, my brother went to go visit with him and he brought me back something my grandad wanted to give me. It was a Barbie Doll Horse.

(My family thrives in dark humor)
After an interesting funeral, my cousins, siblings, and I were posing for our own funeral pics, silly & serious. My grandmother joined in and we had a blast... until the aunts and uncles got all in their feelings.

I had a real grandma. She would cook pots of food for ppl. Her only requirement was to send her pot back 😆😆 I miss her SO MUCH! She passed in 2018 and fortunately she had already begun preparing us for her passing and I was able to get pictures of her. Our family hasn't been the same, but we're trying to do what she told us to do and that was for us to stay close and keep loving each other #lizzysmalls

My grandma was about 80 before Alzheimer’s hit, I went to visit her in Arizona. On the porch one night she was sweeping the patio and she put the broom in between her legs and said “ how do you like my ride?” with the biggest grin. I’ll never forget it. 🙂 This woman looked gorgeous. Bless her heart.

My mom, when Alzheimer’s hit she could only remember my daughter’s name and always asked for her. And I think the reason for that was that I named my daughter after her grandmother and I think in her mind she made that connection. Then she thought that my sister was her sister. My mom passed almost 3 yrs ago and I never forget how Alzheimer’s affected her.

She got me hooked on watching the YOUNG and THE RESTLESS at nine years old 😝… Actually quite a few of them as we only were allowed the watch the TV in the kitchen. She was the best cook ever! The best Gumbo you could ever have in New Orleans was in my grandma’s kitchen . She was classy and elegant. The absolute best seamstress! My mom passed from breast cancer when I was 6 months old. My mother’s parents never really got over the hurt of losing their daughter, but when I was young I would go over to their house now and then. They had a box of my mother’s things including photos and a lock of her hair. My grandma would sit on the floor with me and go through that box and tell me wonderful things about my mother, the woman that I never got to know. I drove back and forth between Wichita and Dallas every week until I took a one way trip to stay with Granny. On the trips, my own children captured pics of Granny and me together at different moments, holding hands, sitting quietly together, me crying, her whispering to me. I buried my mother and father 5 months apart 7 years ago. They had been married 58 years then, and they got married on the Air Force Base where my Father was stationed and it was basically like the courthouse weddings just on base. So for their 50th wedding anniversary me and my 3 siblings paid for and planned them a wedding ceremony at the church we all attended. I can see the pictures from that day on the wall in the front room right now. I have 3 grandkids now and I’m Nana! They are my example, and the ceremony we had made them happy, but was nothing compared to what they have put into us.

Many of our grandparents sacrificed ALOT of their dreams for us. Back then they couldn’t “have it all” My granddad didn’t go to college, he went straight to work after high school (which it was an achievement for a sharecropper’s son to even finish HS) and he let my grandma go off to school. He did a great job earning for his family and setting himself for retirement. So in his 70’s he wanted to go back to school just to achieve a former dream of his. He got his bachelors [walked across the same stage] at the age of 74 and got his master’s (in theology...he’s now a preacher) with my cousin at 77; he was the oldest graduate at the uni - made local news. It was adorable seeing him walk on campus with his backpack all tight on his back. He would call me if I was missed/late for class, “Baby, I didn’t see you in class today. Did you lose your way?” 😂 I’d think “No Pop Pop I just have a hangover” Graduating with my granddad was one of the memorial moments of my life! So proud of him! My children’s children will know...

I specifically remember him saying to my brother that he wanted to be cremated that way even in death he can have people coughing and sneezing. I miss his ridiculousness and the way he used to piss people off I always laughed hysterically around him when he wasn’t being longwinded

My grandpa passed in 2020 right before everyone was aware of COVID. My most cherished memory was how I convinced him (a quiet, serious but loving man) to chaperone for my 1st grade class trip to Dorney Park. We got on the wild mouse ride and he hollered and cursed the whole entire ride, while I was enjoying the thrill. Never heard him yell like that. After the ride, he said he “almost had a heart attack” and just rode on the slow train ride around the park 😂.

My maternal granny was my best friend. My other grandparents died before I was born so she was all I knew, my everything. She was extremely active in our lives from birth. She lived to be 83. Alzheimer's was the culprit. After I moved away, I used to sneak into town for the weekend to take her to dinner and a movie without telling my parents I was in town. It was our little secret. 💗 I am so blessed that I have pictures of us together and handwritten cards that she sent me in the mail. I also have her book of recipes in her handwriting. My grandma was 79 when she passed from complications brought on by Alzheimer’s. I would give ANYTHING to have a moment such as this…ANY type of moment with her, to be quite honest with you. I was blessed enough, however, to be raised by her, so she instilled all of the values that only someone from her generation could give. I have so many great memories with her that I don’t even know where to begin with sharing them with you. I will say she was the original Madea before Tyler Perry came about, gun in the purse and all. She was the type that would tell you exactly how she felt about you with zero f*cks given. Even though she had a strong mouth and could curse like a sailor, she was also the type to give you her last if you needed it. Just don’t piss her off, or she would be hell on wheels to you from that moment on. Would permanently forget your name and everything. 😒

My maternal grandmother passed away before I was born and that's probably the one that leaves me biggest hole. I have so many questions that I'll never know the answers to or things I'll never experience. That's not to say I didn't have a "grandma". That woman was in my life from the age of 6 months to when she passed, I was about 10. I loved that lady and my fondest memory will forever be her attempting to comb my hair...with my tender headed self and us watching her shows together. I feel people my age and younger just stopped respecting their elders and I can't stand it because you still have yours. Don't take them for granted.

My fondest memory of my late paternal grandmother was of her cutting the meat in every of her meal into pieces. She would then call each grandchild to take a piece. I bawled at her wake (I was about 8 or 9) and danced like the holy spirit during the procession so much so that they let me lead the procession.
My maternal grandmother is still living and is the gentlest soul. She always had packs of white handkerchiefs which she made sure to give me each time she saw me because it's ladylike. I remember when I was about 7, I was burning up with malaria so she strapped me to her back and trekked hundreds of miles to the evening clinic to get me shots. She did this for many days till I was better.
I am so grateful to have these memories with these women! 💓
