For the people concerned with the use of language in my latest video... I understand, but can't apologize. Our situation is dire, and this is the word that fits. As a spoken word artist, a great deal of thought goes into the words I choose. The word was not used with disregard to the public... I was actually quoting a friend who completely hit the nail on the head by saying it. The word is used specifically to shine a light on the problem, and has caused exactly the intended effect. Yes, I could have changed it to 'mess with' or 'screw with'... but do either of those options make the line stand out? No. The fact that the world is more concerned with a single word over the fact that our planet is in crisis, just shows how completely lost we are. Everyday we are subjected to images and articles of intense violence... but still we choose to object to a word that describes our feelings about the situation, rather than the actual situation itself. Our planet is dying... I can think of no more appropriate time to use this word... I can think of no better word to describe the immeasurable scope of despair and frustration I feel toward our treatment of the planet. Share the video or don't... the choice is, and will always be yours... I am forcing no one to watch it. This campaign is a call to action... real action is what's needed to save our home... our survival depends on the participation of all. Please don't think that the omission of a single word is the action that's going to make this world a better place.

I agree. I don't think you could have worded it better. This whole poem was just perfect. When I was a kid, I was lied to. Everyone always told me I had to believe in God and that he was the creator of everything. But as I grew up I started to see that all of it was a lie. We only have one life. And even if that's scary to think about, we shouldn't worry. Because we actually have a life. We are lucky to have been given this one chance to live. So I'm going to make the most of it :) you are a great inspiration, Shane. Please stay strong and keep making these beautiful works of art.

I could not agree with you more Shane Koyczan. The F-word shouldn't be used in every sentence, because it loses it effectiveness and impact. This is the perfect time for it.
On a side note, I watched you read your poem last night in Victoria. I was really, really blown away. I wanted to shake your hand for it during the interval but I was one of the volunteers and was busy signing people up!! :D Keep up the great work!

Lisa Shears Actually asian ladybugs were purposefully introduced to help farmers deal with the soybean aphids. Everything else you said about them is true, though. They got way out of hand.

    • @shearslisa
      @shearslisa 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

obakemano Thanks, I am 44, years old, and over my lifetime, I've watched the cows/sheep/horses disappear from the fields, they are now, for the most part raised in factories, often being kept in one position their entire lives. To the extreme, when it's time for them to be slaughtered, they cannot even walk. They never see the sun shine, they never feel the rain. They have little socialization, with other animals. The saddest part is they never get the chance to stand on grass. I wasn't certain on how the Asian Ladybug got here, it's the mere situation that no one knows or cares where their food is coming from. God* whether or not you believe in Him, gave us dominion over the animals and the earth, if you don't believe, we still have that power. We, as the human race, ought to be shamed, hanging our heads low. We don't allow them the pleasure of being outdoors, smelling fresh air, such as it is now. I think they deserve that as they gift us with their lives for our life cycle. I myself, rarely eat any meat at all, and only because I am anemic. If I wasn't, rest assured It'd be other things, that can't be abused, like the animals are. Monsanto, is the main reason this is happening, they have cornered the market on many food products. Growth hormones, genetically modified seeds, and tomatoes, when is the last time you tasted a tomato that actually tastes like a tomato? The vine ones are the closest, but they aren't grown as the used to be, in manure, the way it's been done for hundreds/thousands of years before Monsanto. They have created the tomato so it is like rubber, they bounce, so they pack as much as possible into a truck and ship them without them getting split. I would rather eat a real tomato with a split in it, than a red rubber ball, anyone else. We really need this to change. Why do you think the children are having so many new diagnosis' of ADHD, SAD, ANXIETY ETC. Look at the size of the doorframes from 100 years ago, the preservatives and growth hormones are creating gigantic teens. I think the only thing that Monsanto hasn't wrecked yet, fully at least is cows milk. Watch what you eat, avoid Mc Donalds and fast food restaurants, they are a big part of the problem. Try a cookbook, you'd be surprised at how easy cooking is, it's also fun and you know what you are eating, unlike processed, pre made foods. I can give you a hundred tips on how to change how you are eating, if you wish to change this so we can minimum put effort into being somewhat human once again. Remember too, animals have emotions too, and the way they are now being treated is abhorrent. We need them more than they need us, and that is a fact. God bless you in for you efforts to make this world a better place for mine and your children. Thank you! The Lovers of money, shall reap what they sow, literally. These are suggestions only, not laws. I guess it comes down to swearing or littering, it's a matter of your own morality, and upbringing.

The part where he says there's nothing more precious, and that we are sheltered within an atmosphere that has given us every breath we will ever take, every monument we have ever made has come from the flesh of our planet. Water like blood. Skin like soil. Bone like granite. It is not a myth. Facts are in. Fact is there's never been any question. We are facing crisis. That part always gives me chills. It makes me realize how precious and vital the earth is and how we must protect it to protect ourselves. It makes me thing that we are one with the Earth in a way.

If you tell them not to use it, lets be honest they will, but they'll learn it eventually. I never flinched at a cuss word cause my mom taught me the main ones before I was 10. Those of you complaining that he said "fuck" in his poem have
    1. have never heard of his poem holding it's relevance to sexual acts, and
    2. have never learned that poetry is meant to be told in emphasis by the one who wrote it.
It's an emotion. And words are power, and through voice and vocal chord vibration, it makes it an amazing poem.

God this was beautiful. I've always been a fan of the rain and hearing your Grandmother's story really hit home. That was an amazing way to put it, and when I was a kid I was always obsessed with mythology and astronomy myself. Now everytime I look up at the stars outside my house, I'll think of this.

Ray j But that's just it, our world came from a churning world of magma. So even if we do fail, even if the magma resurfaces and swallows us and we all perish among the flames, the world will move on. Whatever remains, even if its this indestructible, non biodegrading plastic, the world will build around it or even incorporate it in its designs. Yes the animals we know today will disappear along with us and that is on us, but that is not the end of life entirely, just the end of a chapter.

Solomon Grundy will the earth has 1 billion years before the sun really affects it, now i know that sounds a lot to human cause your life is just more or less (mostly less) 100, but for life that took it much more then a 100 year to start being, a billion years is nothing, so we have less than billion years to fix things because we only have billion more to go. and when i say we i mean life on planet earth. you are right the earth will be fine, life on earth will not.

I've been listening to your work for a long time, Shane.
Like most born in the last 40 years, life has dealt me a lot of bad hands and really worked to break me and others down. Sad to say, I've lost both my confidence and way on more than one occasion. I've felt so alone so often, feeling torn between wanting to love and hate the world.
Trapped in my mind for so long, I've reassessed myself time and again throughout the years. I don't hate humans, and life is far from meaningless. I pity humans and believe precious life is often wasted. I can best describe myself as a misanthropic humanitarian. As much endless contempt as I feel for humans, I will do anything to ensure they thrive and know happiness.
All too often a beautiful face is betrayed by a miniscule scar, so many never looking beyond and into the heart the face and scar belong to. I do the same with humanity as a whole. I look at the men and women who have crowned themselves our rulers as they toxify our planet and sew seeds of hatred, look at their followers who champion their messages, people who treat other people badly, but all too often, I forget there is always at least one who stands firm for others instead of themselves. In a world where so many focus on the bad, it can be easy or even involuntary to overlook the good. After enduring so much bad, I still try not to overlook the good. Sometimes it works and that's enough for me.
You've reminded me of this, Shane. Your work has the ability to save lives. Don't ever stop what you're doing.

Listening to shayne's poetry has honestly opened up the way I see myself and this world again. I use to see happiness and beauty in everything because I was young, excited and I had a great understanding of what really matters in life. but after graduating high school, things really wern't as I thought they'd be. My friends telling me I was unrealistic and silly thinking I could actually be successful in college, even my parents were giving me doubt. I guess they've always been afraid of showing any emotion and as I was finally getting to experience college and a little more of life on my own. I Slowly began to fell into the worse black hole of depression I could ever find myself in. somewhere during those two years of losing myself, I became a completely, depressed, lonely angry person and I saw absolutely no beauty or happiness in anything. i dont know what happened. why would I allow myself to lose myself so far away from the drug free, confident, and inspired kid I was all my life!! I use to be completely inspired by life and just truly enjoyed making everyone I know happy! I truly can't believe that I now have ridiculously scary anxiety, anger, huge debt, no one in my life, completely lonely, and just no hope or positivity left me. if you really think about how someone can lose themselves so far from the amazing beautiful happy person they once were, you start to realize that this world also has alot of people that dont understand what the beauty of life really can be! and those people fuck you up if you let them in your mind instead of you shining the light into their minds.
