The slag is probably tin and copper oxides, they melt at a much higher temp than the metals themselves. The copper should stay in the pewter, metals can dissolve into other metals when one is molten. Gold will dissolve in mercury at room temperature!
@@carolynnr.6409 you could heat the amalgam ( mixure of mercury and gold) to evaporate the mercury, leaving the gold behind. This was actually used as a method to extract traces of gold from crushed ore. Often the mercury was recaptured by distillation so it could be used again. Its not used much anymore because mercury is so toxic and distilling it isnt exactly easy.
Glad to see your pulling out the nicer pieces instead of melting them. When I see beautiful pieces being scrapped it makes me feel like part of our history and heritage is being erased.
I use a lead testing kit to test my pieces first and separate out the leaded pewter and the lead free. Lead free pewter ingots sell for closer to $12/lb. Not my place to tell you what to do, but I'd recommend the testing. Also I use a gas stove and a stainless steel pan.
BBD YOU are AMAZING!! I CAN WATCH YOU DO WHAT YOU DO FOR HOURS !! SMELTING , MELTING, SELLING, BUYING ! EXPLAINING! I AM HOOKED ON YOUR CHANNEL FOREVER. GREAT VIDEO 👍 👍. PEACE ✌ ✌.
From Google, pewter is 85 to 95 percent tin. The remainder varies and can be copper, antimony, bismuth, silver, and sometimes lead. Modern pewter doesn't usually contain lead, since the industry got away from that due to toxicity concerns. But your slag could potentially contain some of all those metals perhaps along with their oxides present. From a toxicity standpoint, lead and antimony would be the most to be concerned about. Low grade pewter containing lead often has a bluish tint.
Thank you, Dave, for another Master Class, Looking forward to learning how to melt silver since creating jewelry from scratch is my dream. Enjoy trick or treating with Gaby & Darwin, Be safe!
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video!!! I'm hooked on your channel, lol! I love watching you find all those treasures. I especially enjoy the fact that you pick out so many pins. Soooo, can you make a video on how you strip silver? Thanks for sharing 😊
That was cool to watch!! I was glad you did the time lapse because my phone battery was low!! Thanks Steve, I worry about Dave (or anyone) doing things like this alone.
We us moms old cast iron stove when we melt : ) Indoors in her kitchen ; ) It has metal rings on the Surface that can be removed and then you can put a cast iron wok in the hole …. Tho we don´t melt this much at the same time.
Great video love teaching moments. It’s nice to watch scrapping, buying and selling but a teaching video is knowledge. For me this was one of the better videos. Thanks 😊
So strange to see something turn into nothing but a little puddle of metal. I think it's a good idea to stamp them with your BBD logo and sell them for paper weights. Cool to watch ! 😜 👍✌️
People "reload" and make new ammunition, makes tinsoldiers/Warhammer and ppl who fish and make their own flyes etc need either led or tin and led is not healthy...
Im am not one of those safety freaks.. Ventilation good but i would be wearing a respirator.. My dad died of of kidney cancer linked to being a welder for 40 years.. Metal fumes are nasty..
Fascinating but please take care of yourself I am sure you should be wearing a mask those fumes can be a killer. None the less very interesting thanks from Ros
Blue Bus Dave Use it to make jewelry!! I remember you saying in a video before you wanted to do something creative. You have a great eye for jewelry, etc. I would LOVE to see what you come up with!! It would sell higher because you made it!!
DAAAAAAAAVVVVVVVVVID, aww aren’t you going to use any to make jewelry??? 😢. You could at least make a few things for your girls..... that would be soooooo sweet to get something you made. I would love to work with that stuff, it looks fun!
This is the experiment that I'm wanting to try and that I'm prepping for right now. I just need 5gr 99.9% pure tin metal I'm having a hard time finding some around my place anyways Using modern science and fusion to fuse tin and copper into gold isotope 104 I need to stabilize the isotope with 14 neutrons because fusing copper and gold gives you 79 electrons 79 protons only a 104 neutrons which means stabilizing it with 14 neutrons should give us a nice stable 118 isotope if I'm successful with this experiment this could be extremely important for the technological production industry as expensive gold is used in many of their processes for making solid state chips ultimately lowering the cost for future technology in theory this should work with tungsten and Boron and stabilizing it with an extra 13 neutrons
Judging by my time working for a very large metaphysical importer; most pewter in the world these days is used to make copious amounts of cheap pagan jewelry and other decorations. EDIT: This would also be MUCH easier to melt and cast with a Devil Forge. I would not be without mine.
Dave, you could film yourself picking your nose for an hour and I would find your video interesting. 🤪😂🤣😂🤪 That was a very enjoyable video. I would love to help you, but I live in Denmark.😞 I would love to see more smelting videos. They are oddly relaxing. 😊 I hope you and the kids had a wonderful time trick or treating. Did you get dressed up? I could see you as Bob the Builder's dad....😁🇩🇰
Pewter is usually 98% tin, 1.5% antimony and 0.5% copper
The slag is probably tin and copper oxides, they melt at a much higher temp than the metals themselves. The copper should stay in the pewter, metals can dissolve into other metals when one is molten. Gold will dissolve in mercury at room temperature!
I didn't know that! How would you get the gold OUT of the mercury?

Interesting video... You really do diversify! Try everything and see what works. Keeps life enjoyable 👍👍😃😃🎯

Looks like a Good Answer!!!
You could stamp them BBD like you said, then sell them on eBay with limited number on them. ie 1 of 100 etc.👍🏻🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧💰💰💰💰💰💰
Not sure but if that is safe be careful. I love watching you
Hey Dave , you should try Mapp gas fuel with that tip , much hotter . We use it for brazing refrigeration lines , yellow bottles .

Hey Dave, This is a Brimfield question from a year ago. What did you do with that awesome jewelry design catalog.?
On our shelf at home. Enjoying it for now but have had a few offers on it😊✌️✌️
Blue Bus Dave Use it to make jewelry!! I remember you saying in a video before you wanted to do something creative. You have a great eye for jewelry, etc. I would LOVE to see what you come up with!! It would sell higher because you made it!!
You have to put Flux to burn out the dirt and bad material
Flux its same like Borax ?

eWaste Ben would be so proud ✌
It was fun ✌️✌️✌️
How much is the gas cost per pound of pewter?? Is it cost effective? And, you should have a mask on I think!!!
I did 25 pounds on one can and still have some gas leftover also got the gas for free from a clean out
Blue Bus Dave Thats cool then that the gas if free!!! Happy Halloween!!!!

Ciao Blue Bus Dave. Posso chiederti una gentilezza. Dove posso prendere il peltro. Devo creare una scultura e non so dove reperirlo.
Yep if it is hard on the lungs where a mask
Pretty cool video!
How many price / kg of melted can in your Nation??
Could you please add a link to your eBay shop? Many thanks in advance.
Constance just type in BBD and jewelry will come up than go to his seller name
@@randywilliams3246 Thanks, Randy. I'm in!
When you melt it you get pure tin. That sells for $20 a pound. Where can I buy all your melted pewter for $8 a pound?
If you melt it at under 600 degrees that it. The process cleans it.
Not sure if that is safe be careful
mmmmmm metal muffins
