what do you mean by "surprisingly vulnerable"? Like "Wow, they die really easily!"?
First of all the aquatic ancestor hypotheses has yet to be proven.
Many experts actually disagree with this, I quote "because there is a lack of fossils of echidnas doesn't mean that they didn't exist, their environment conditions and hollow bird like bones need extraordinary circumstances and conditions to fossilize properly. Whilst the platypus has heavy, dense reptilian bones. Like Birds, Crocodilians and Reptiles all evolved from therapods (recently proven therapods to be more bird related, than they are reptilian related(same as crocodiles). The Tuatara is said to be the first diverging into reptilians, since Tuatara aren't Dinosaurs, Lizards, Snakes, Birds, Crocodilian, or what have you, but have more commonality/features/traits to prehistoric birds(of all places the last species of Tuatara live is the Island of Birds) .
It's believed by a good portion of the experts that the two monotremes share a similar splitting ancestry.
Also the other reason it's believed that the hypothesis is incorrect, is that the Echidna has 4 species types, whilst the Platypus has only one. Also the little thing that makes up a big commonality in species(especially those far from being related) is Convergent evolution..
Lastly, is the fact that the Platypus Gene Map shows that its Bird(67%), Mammal(22%) and Reptile(11%) - meaning the more bird like Echidna has a much older ancestry than the Platypus (this is the most upto date 2023 peer reviewed journal widely accepted.

Elias6233 they probably bought that footage from someone. In all probability the fire footage wasnt shot along with the hibernation shot. They just combined them to illustrate a proven scientific fact even if they couldnt have it on film themselves.
I mean, you don't really need to. Bushfires are a fairly regular thing here. Hell, they probably saw such things thousands of times during the Black Saturday fires, for instance.

We have echidnas around us all the time. They are great little animals
Well how about that. Thought I knew all about the echidna. Never knew of this ability to induce a hibernation state to escape bushfire.
