Really enjoyed this review Jim. Had this about 1.5 years ago and at the time it was my favorite Irish whiskey (until my son shared his RB Cask Strength with me). I also bought bottles of sherry about a year ago to try and see the difference between PX and Oloroso and it really helped me. I actually bought that Lustau sherry and was amazed at the syrupy sweetness compared to a couple of the drier sherries I tried.

Cheers Drew. Yeah I think that venturing into the world of wines and sherries, and those things which we recognise as "finishers" can be a great step toward understanding our whiskies.
      Thanks my friend.

That sounds like homework for Advanced Whisky Studies. Manzanilla and Amontillado also but there is another one I can't think of.

Appreciated the discussion on how your palate may have changed and the recommendation on the end was very interesting. Cheers!

I'm a big fan of Redbreast 12 & I really like this Lustau edition, only cost me £5 more. I really like the fruitiness.

Although I'm not doing Irish whiskey reviews at this time I thought I should watch this series and compare notes. I'll be doing a Sherry & Sherry Cask whiskies series in 2021 at which time I'll compare Irish Whiskies with Scotch and American that have been aged or finished in sherry casks. So, I will return to the RB Lustau again soon.

Hi Jim more great content thanks chap 👍 sounds like your heart still likes it but your head is saying 'have a word!'
I love the Redbreast 12 although I believe the cask strength is the Don by all accounts. Theres a lot of colour in the Lustau for a NAC and considering poor casks may have been used?
Have you reviewed anything from JJ Corry - some of their stuff would fall into the Irish Oddball category? I have The Gael batch 1 (although yet to try it I bought on recommendation) but they seem to be doing some great stuff what are your thoughts?

Cheers Al. I'm still treading gently through Irish whiskey because so much of it is still sourced by young distilleries. There will be loads to come in the future though.

I’ve done that with the Sherry, not with the Redbreast but with Sherry matured scotch’s. It does help tune the palate for me. Cheers!

This one has always been on my radar, Jim, but always pulled back from it. I have a bit of that N.Irish sweet-tooth going on, so might be worth a punt. Thanks again! :)

Irish cat nip-- well said. I do enjoy all Redbreast and the 24 is divine, but far too expensive. This is a dram that I think is good value and quite nice. I do enjoy RB12 which may be the Irish I go to most often. Great review, Jim. Your recommendation to buy a sherry aligns with Scott Adamson's "softer side" session last year.

Cheers Bud. Ah, I missed that from Scott.
Yeah Midleton really do make a wonderful single pot still. It is though, as you stated, expensive.
      Cheers my friend.

Haven’t had this, but I love the RB 12. Good review Jim, still thinking about getting Jameson’s black bottle, seen it for €30 (£27) . Wonder what’s coming in the next review?!🤔 , cheers Jim.take care.

Cheers David. Oh if you haven't already got a bottle of what I'm reviewing next...I'd say it's quite unlikely you'll get one. You'll see what I mean soon. Yeah that Black Barrel is definately worth picking up mate.

Jumped over this one in my exploration of the Redbreast lineup. Most likely age statment snobbery on my part. The 12, 12cs, & 15 are all great. Cheers Jim.

This is a real Christmas whiskey. Richer than the standard 12 to me .

    • @WhiskeyNovice
      @WhiskeyNovice  3 ปีที่แล้ว

The sherry definately adds another dimension but, through time, the 12yr old for me, holds up better.

Now, I've been through an entire bottle of this whisky and I kept waiting and waiting for it to become something other than sour, dry, rotting oranges. It never happened. One of the worst whiskies I've ever suffered through.

Sorry Jim, I'm gonna play again the dissonant voice here (lol, colors & tastes my friend, you know...) as I see it seems to be popular, I tried this twice (when it was first out, so early batches) & disliked it immediately, finding it way too winey for me & too sweet. I had a conversation about it with someone say "famous" (I'm embarrassed to say who and it is even worse nowadays if it was known) & he confirmed my impressions about this novelty...I felt a bit sad the way it came across from a quite respectable man, not because of what he said, but because of the cynism of people "making decisions" (...). Having said that, it was a while ago, it is possible they changed the recipe & that I could like it now, but I won't rave to get a sample of it, to be honest...So I'm giving you a hands up because it is a well done review & quite respectable too, even if this isn't my cup of tea....See you later on, btw ! Cheers my friend...
