Applied Weapons Technologies Griptilian Handle Set: Now It's a Grip!

  • Here's my review of the excellent handle kit for the Benchmade Griptilian (and Mini Grip) by Applied Weapons Technologies. AWT was founded and is owned by Shane Ward, a young man from Kentucky, and got its start making high performance long range rifle chassis from billet aluminum. Along the way, to fill time and pay the bills, Shane branched out into making handle sets for the Benchmade Griptilian. In this video, we'll examine a set, and they are excellent! With great ergonomics, precise machining, solid hardware and a super tough hard anodized finish, the AWT Grip grips are a great option to upgrade the Noryl GTX handle of your Griptilian.
Here's the link to Shane's website:

I have two sets of these scales one large and one mini, I had a problem with centering on the large. Contacted Shane and he said the pivot was to long, I sent in in and he fixed it for me for price of shipping. My knives perfect now. Great review, I look forward to more from you.

Thank you for this video! It helped me to firm up my purchase finger on the AWT web site. I had it ordered 5 times before this video but just was not convinced enough to complete the online purchase. With this review I was able to click purchase with confidence.

Just ordered a pair of these which gave me a 'nothing to lose' mindset on my current Grip FRN handles. What I (& most of the world) hate about them is lightweight & the molded 'jimping'. To address the [lack of] handle weight, I mixed up some 8-minute epoxy & carefully filled the pockets at the heel & non-spine side. This avoids any possible interference with the liner assembly. Then I carefully filed, sanded, & buffed those irritating molded 'jimping' areas.
Much improved feel in the hand & better balance. Kinda old school but I'm pleased with the results!

These scales look great - just like a factory BM 707. For those that have Grips at the old price, these would be ideal. You could get, before they went to MAP pricing, a 707 for $98 from KW. Now you pay $140, and a Mini-Grip is $89. Add $76 for these grip and that Mini-Grip is more than a factory 707. Of course, there is no aluminum option for the full sized Grip. The new G10 ones are nice though, but spendy, as you get a different steel too.

i love the the frn grips you stand corrected. part of the reason i love the 551 griptilian so much is that it has no finger grooves, and your able to sweep the thumb along the length of the grip and flip the knife open instinctively in any situation, when you put a pronounced one finger choil, you need to have a more precise thumb placement to flick the knife open. imo you put these grips on your knife and its a completely different knife, and not necessarily for the better. i love my griptilian just the way it is.

Why are you using the thumb stud on a Axis lock knife. It should be a one thumb affair to open and close that knife. Pull the Axis lock bar back with only one thumb and swing it open. To close it do the same, you don’t need both thumbs to actuate the lock. It took me a while to figure out that method but when I did I fell in love with the Axis lock.

Benchmade announced G-10 scales for the Griptilian family nine days ago on Twitter and Facebook. Of course most of us already own the knife, so new scales is the most logical option.

Having two sets of AWT scales now. Heres my quick conclusions:
    Scales are amazing.
Bought my knife the same week as the scales. Wouldn't even consider carrying a grip with stock scales.
The blade action is better than excellent, but not perfect. Even with polished washers and contact points, my AWT grip does not gravity drop with 0 bladeplay. However, no effort needed to retract the blade into the handle. Likewise, no effort needed to deploy the blade (thumb hole flick BM550) even with solid lockup.
The I.D. on the scales are too tight OOB, due to anodizing.
The colors are ridiculously over-exaggerated on the website and such. Black is more like dark gray. Blue is more like dark blue. And bronze is more like dark dark dark brown.
Both sets of scales had nicks out of them. Minor small nicks, still annoying.
Tip: If AWT's site says they are out of stock in a color, look an Amazon and buy from CustomTac (dealer).

what? screws into aluminum treads? I remember you had problems with the zt 808'S titanium backspacer for that very reason...

    • @TheApostleP
      @TheApostleP  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

+EasternGateGuardian You've been paying attention! I would definitely prefer threaded posts going through both scales and the backspacer, but as I said in the video, the rest of the mechanism does a pretty good job with precise location, and I'm not sure they're needed. The tight threads could present a problem if you're not expecting them though.

Great lines, sleek profile, well done.
Great side by side of the infamous Wilkins Grip.
I'd add that your smooth back spacer on your WG is preferred (IMO) over the serrated ones he is doing now.
There's no denying the quality of a WG,
I like the design of this grip from AWT and would like to see/use one for up close.
    Great review.

The Griptilian has never really interested me personally even though I can see its attraction for others, Shane has made a good start in knife handle kits by making the Griptilian look more of a working tool rather than a Tonka toy.The small message with his wares was inspiring and the quote from Patrick Henry rang true with me especially being a Crusty old Scot. Oh by the way Rob, if that is your definition of an Old mans knife maybe I should keep my flint shard as I must be classed as ancient by now.L.O.L. God bless all.

Nobody likes it? Hell I love the stock handles. I see no point in replacing them. Grip is fine for me, certainly better than some full titanium framelocks. The zytel is much lighter than G10 or aluminum, the liners are covered by the zytel which is a nice plus. And it makes a bad sound while you open the knife? Holy moly I think we are getting worse than women if we are choosing to bash a knife just because it makes a different sound, lol.

+Brian Graves Interesting point, Brian, but completely contrary to the proposed proof for his THEORY Darwin provided in "The Origin of Species." He cautioned strongly that were his THEORY of evolution correct, and a candidate to become scientific LAW, complete evidence of it would be found by scientists in the fossil record within a couple of generations. That would have been prior to the turn of the 20th century. As it stands, over 100 more years have passed, and the closest thing we have to proof from the fossil record is "Lucy," a quite incomplete skeleton cobbled together from obviously different locations and strata (times) of an archaeological dig. I read and listen to the opinions of evolution advocates often, but one thing is conspicuously missing from your arguments: the THEORY of evolution remains just that, a theory, which has never, after 150 years, been supported by enough evidence to be considered scientific LAW. Perhaps that's because it isn't so...
