Nice reaction. Yes, you got it, this version sounds like a late 80s song because it was a 1987 remix of their 1983 original. If you get a chance to hear the original, or watch the official video, you will hear a big difference between both versions. The original version sounds more sparse, more early 80s dance / breakdance (like Planet Rock) and less polished. Either way, I think you'll enjoy both versions for what they give you.
Sorry to be picky but it wasn't a remix but a rerecording for Substance. Rerecordings and remixes are quite different processes, especially in those days...
ugh, so disappointed hearing this 1987 version. My preferred version is the 1983 "instrumental version". th-cam.com/video/dHwVai62CYs/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared I couldn't listen to this 1987 version longer than 2 minutes. The Pump Panel Reconstruction mix is indeed not bad.
"Confusion" follows the same eletro-synth-pop path as “Blue Monday” before it, and I have to admit that it was from this point on that New Order became much less interesting to me (even though I followed them up to and including their 1986 Brotherhood album). To add confusion to our subject, note that this version of "Confusion" you just listened to, is not the original 1983 version but a 1987 re-recording for this compilation (hence the difference with what you would expect for a piece from 1983). Needless to say, I dislike this 1987 version even more than the original, which already left me cold!
Love this version
I've said it before but on the same album as the pump panel mix of Confusion is the Hardfloor Remix of Blue Monday and you would LOVE that 😁
Yessss , I like this better than Blue Monday , not a popular comment I’m sure . Great review

@ No worries- you are correct, it was a re-recording. 👍🏼

This remix is not the one. The original is FAR superior. Legendary. Leg And Dairy.

Is it really needless to say?
