I'd like to petition to add the new Merfolk deck (Explorers of the Deep) onto this list. Out of the box that deck has nearly everything a Merfolk deck wants and I have shredded multiple established decks with it right out of the box. All four of the new Ixalan precons are excellent but that one is in particular.
@@famousstranger8468 Really? I’ve both watched and played games and the merfolk deck is consistently the one doing the most and being the archenemy. Comments on videos where it was played (including Mostly Casual Commander and The Spike Feeders) concur with that.
@@famousstranger8468 While I was not watching the pirate deck that closely in all honesty, it seemed to me to be the worst of the four by a good margin by decklist. The commander is too expensive for what she does and the alternate commander has a fun strategy but the deck is not properly build for it. It seems very all over the place to me.
I just opened a box of Commander Masters and upgraded Kamiz. They absolutely deserved the jeweled lotus to get out even quicker. That deck was pretty slept on and is a definite fave.
I love the idea of Aesi, my upgraded version (which I've had to purposely make weaker that it should be to be fairer at my LGS) is great, super consistent in what it does, fun silly things to be done in every game and it has never once felt unimpactful. In practice however it makes me feel guilty due to the time issue that results from having to repeatedly shuffle then draw. I feel like it bores the table too often because I could easily end up shuffling half a dozen times or more in a turn for multiple turns in a row, then when people do get their turn and try to cast a big hitter or their commander or a board wipe, they often just get countered by the heavy complement of counterspells I run and it ends up with me having 5+ min turns vs "untap, upkeep, draw, fail to get a spell off, end turn" that opponents get reasonably often. Fun deck to play, hateful to play against which makes it one of my least played decks at that power level. The amount of shuffling is just a huge problem for table satisfaction, not really what you want to be doing in casual games, even high power ones.
@@NitpickingNerds Dudes right Aesi is way better than most these n I'm not talking out my butt I have done a precon tournament using 16 pre-cons and Aesi came out on top n easily clapped necrons in tournament. What is important to me in a Precon is that it is fun to play. LOts of interaction, balanced so you are not the villain the whole time and the flavour. i built myself a Treefolk deck and even though its bad i love how it works.
I obviously play "Revel in Riches" in my Prosper Deck and it wins so freakin often - Tutor it with 9 treasure tokens in play, make another one, and win the next turn - this also works with "Warrior's Oath" like a charm because no one sees it coming. And to get even more treasures: Play "Uba Mask" And kids: Don't forget to steal your opponent's cards because why pay money for expensive cards when you just can use someone else library lol
I think that the Veloci-ramp-tor precon for LCI should have at least gotten an honorable mention-the cards in it were absolutely insane and the commander can get so much value with one ore two upgrades.
My picks are Faldorn, Osgir, Hakbal (the new Merfolf from Ixalan) and my unpopular pick: Ellivere of the wild chord. Ellivere fixes a lot about the enchantress/voltron style decks. It's not too passive or combo orientend and it incentifies enchanting multiple creatures, not buliding you invincible voltron beat stick whick one shots people via commander damage and can't be interacted with. I think it's way over hated because the commander masters enchantress precon had a lot of the same reprints. I also really liked the Hobbit Precon, since it brought a lot of really good food support into the format.

@@famousstranger8468I’ve been editing mine to include treasure generation and discover mechanics from LCI. I found that the deck is mana intensive because there are not a lot of spells you can cast for free OR let you cast other spells for free so adding treasure helps save mana for when I need it and discover is better cascade. Brass’s Tunnel Grinder is a great include because Faldorn feeds the descend mechanic so you get the bore counters quick and then it flips into a land that lets you discover when you cast spells with it.
I'm glad the Meren precon made it on the list. I remember playing it with my college buddies and Meren being targeted literally any time she was cast because I tended to get lucky with what I would dump into my graveyard. 8 months ago I would have agreed wholeheartedly. With all the decks we have gotten since, I don’t think it’s that easy to pick a top 5 within the time frame alone, much less all-time. All I know is that my necron and Exit from Exile decks are definitely not outperforming all the new decks and I definitely don’t see those two decks as the biggest threat of a precon table when i play against them. Speaking of dragon shield, their new years wood dragon accessories are amazing. The play mat is stitched and has Ana amazing foil finish and the sleeves that share art have a unique feel on the art and unlike most other art sleeves, the interior is black. 10/10 Dragon Shield product. 2024 really is the year of the Wood Dragon
Meren was my first commander deck. Prosper is a current favorite. I feel Edgar Markov should have made the list as well as Atraxa. Also I used the party time and built Burako with sword coast sailor fun party control commander
One of the strongest persons that I've played out of the box was the Lord of the rings Humans Precon. Commander floods the board with trample humans, deck has wide buffs, and some just good human cards. I've swapped 2 cards in the deck and it runs really well.
I would put sneak attack with anwon at honorable mention. A ton of evasive rogues getting beefed up. Decent card draw. Enough ramp. Great removal. All at the lower tier of precon that just came with the sets.
I keep a decent collection of untouched precons for lower power games with friends, usually have 6 sleeved up at any one time and by far the most consistent winner was the chaos deck from warhammer 40k. I don't have freyalise or meren to try against it (and missing a lot of the precons from this year), but it regularly trounced faldorn, prosper, party time (using barakos as cmdr), the commander masters enchants deck, the U/B horrors deck, all 3 of the other warhammer decks and the esper knights precon, no other deck I sleeved up won anywhere near as consistently (despite how inconsistent the deck looks at first glance). I recently had to remove it from the selection because it was just warping games too much. We've been having much fairer games so far with the current selection of tyrannids, necrons, party time, faldorn, enduring enchants and cavalry charge but haven't had too many yet with this selection so it's a bit early to tell how balanced it is.
Ok necroms made it. You dodged my disapproval.. THIS TIME! About moxfield: I really love being able to see the art that is in a specific commander deck I'm buying so I really love that they're on point with that
Precons keep getting better and better, but no precon is as thematic and mechanically sound as Mind Flayarrs. Down to the name and even its budgeted mana base, it just doesnt miss.
straight out of the box, Faldorn and necrons have been my favorite precons. big shoutout to Osgir though. He is my number one commander. the precon did what it wanted to do and it was fun but upgraded Osgir is in a league of its own.
Idk if it’s cheating, but Im surprised the heads I win precon (or the other secret Lair), didn’t make the list. I bought Faldhorn and tried to maintain a strict upgrade rule of, “no more than 15 cards out of the original precon list.” And its still such an explosive engine.
I think the toxic precon from phyrexia all will be one was real strong. If you swapped Ixhel for Vishgraz the deck became much more aggressive and could hold its own against non precons pretty well
I played it in a pod With a scarab god, a ishin and a jetmir. Even With this very strong commanders i still Was considered The treath With My Doctor and rose
I feel like you may have overlooked one of probably the most disgusting impulse draw support card of all time, especially if you incorporate ways to cast your opponents cards, Nalfeshnee. Not only is it a decent body on the field as a 4/6 flyer, but most importantly is it’s ability to copy EVERY spell you cast from exile. Every time I get him when I play my prosper deck and when I complete my Yidris deck soon, he causes so much mayhem either giving you more value or even hasty big creatures if you got them. I got etali primal storm with it once and has to sac the original sadly, but I got instant value from the dinosaur that’s lucky to see the end of your opponents next turn! What’s more, when they realize the threat he pose’s suddenly your commander doesn’t look as big as a threat because impulse decks have plenty of ways besides their commander.
Exit from exile was my first precon for commander. I apparently had good taste lol. But I don’t play it much these days, faldorn was definitely better than the partner pair in my experience. Get all three out on the board and it’s game over
Necron Dynastie !!! Grom.warhammer 40K, the monoblack artefact necron deck with alot of synergie good cards ans Trazyn the infinite !! Really nice choice !!
Personally I would swap Party Time (it comes with the secondary commander so idk why that isn't factored into it?) and Guided, I think it is stronger out the box than that one from personal experience Imo 1. Cavalry Charge 2. Exit from Exile 3. Necron Dynasties 4. Planar Portal 5. Party Time
Speaking about the Warhammer 40k Necron precon...I upgraded mine and what I can tell is that artifact hate is a real issue. Plus, I don't really see the advantage of playing monoblack artifact theme since monoblack has so many blind spots and weaknesses and the artifact component dosn't even take advantage of affinity or anything like that. Does anyone have any suggestions? Every time I'm winning if the opponent uses any artifact hate I just lose and there's little to nothing I can do about it 🙁. I feel like having blue in the identity would help soooo much!
Try having Eisenhorn as your Commander, he has a few ways you can play with his abilities, namely making a bunch of artifact tokens that can be used for pay offs or be a spellslinging deck with his upkeep ability. He's an Inquisitor that works with Xeno tech, so it would make sense with him using Necrons in battle against Doctors, Elves, Merfolks, Demons and so on.
The upside of running mono black is usually speed, the deck has a lot of inexpensive combo lines you can execute and just win on the spot early in the game. You also have a lot of mill options, graveyard recursion and the best tutors in your arsenal, so at a high power level the deck shouldn't struggle all that much. If you feel like you get destroyed by Vandalblasts and such, you could try running Blood Artist or Syr Konrad -type effects to punish your opponents for removing your stuff. That, or you could just sacrifice them yourself for some value with the multitude of sac outlets and payoffs at your disposal. Mass reanimation might also suit your fancy. If all else fails and the artifact hate you're facing is a permanent like Collector Ouphe, you could try running more removal to help you deal with the threats.
@@Lenvyathantrue, and yeah, generally I do dominate the board early and gain a good advantage, but even when I'm well ahead a Bane of Progress just stomps me. My power level is around 7 I suppose and generally in our group we don't tend to focus on combos and shy away from the OP tutors but at this point I think your right, it's literally the only thing I can do and my friend just tutors Bane of Progress and reanimates it anyway, and just like that I go from winning to losing. It's kind of frustrating because it dosn't even target and it eats all my enchantments and mana rocks aswell, so there's not much I can do. About Syr Conrad and Blood artist...again, I think your right, I was avoiding those staples exactly because I wanted to keep the identity of the deck and didn't want to play the same cards everyone's playing but Syr Conrad and Marionette Master are too good to pass, I suppose I could create some custom art proxys to make them fit with the Necron theme. Anyway, thank you a lot for the tips, I could also post a list of the deck if you don't mind having a look.
I cant beleive mind flayers isnt on this list. That deck is CRAZY for a precon. My buddy uses it against some of my custom builds (for fun) and it destroys me.
I seriously don't understand how Edgar friggin Markov or Lathril didn't make this list when those two are some of the most popular tribal commanders, EVER. Not to mention both of them are really amazing straight out the box! I mean... Edgar Markov has eminence and has yet to see a true reprint due to his power. Also, it came with Teferis Protection. Absolutely bonkers.
As a Zombie player, I'm kinda disappointed that Undead Unleashed wasn't on the list, but I also understand that there was a decent amount of janky filler in there.
The Velociramptor precon is incredibly strong out of the box and demands answers every turn after Pantlaza hits the board. The discover ability is pretty absurd.

Having picked Exit from Exile, Necrons and Party Time as 3 out of my 5 precons atm I'd say it went pretty well :D
Pretty good guesses!
Ok necroms made it. You dodged my disapproval.. THIS TIME!
About moxfield: I really love being able to see the art that is in a specific commander deck I'm buying so I really love that they're on point with that
Oh and happy Thanksgiving kids!
long time planeswalker just getting back into casual. really just wanted people to talk at me about decks for 30 min. was not disappointed
Awesome list and video.. the ranking or top precon of the year video is always a favorite of mine as well.
Amber and precons!!! Lets go!!!
Name a better combination!
That Edgar deck bricks so hard 🤣
Never felt threatened across from it or piloting for that matter 🤫😆
Great video, thnx and keep em coming!
I think the toxic precon from phyrexia all will be one was real strong. If you swapped Ixhel for Vishgraz the deck became much more aggressive and could hold its own against non precons pretty well
how about the Timey Wimey Doctor Who precon? that deck is out of the box insanely fun and can throw punches really well.
I played it in a pod With a scarab god, a ishin and a jetmir. Even With this very strong commanders i still Was considered The treath With My Doctor and rose
Wait, Edgar Markov didn't make this list!??!? How????
I’m new to MTG and got the wild vines deck . My son got the chubby pirate lady deck.
My Lathril and Prosper decks are unrivaled in my pod, granted a lot of changes from out of the box
I don't know about the best individual precon, but the best year for precons was whatever year both Prossh and Kaalia were released.
Personally I would swap Party Time (it comes with the secondary commander so idk why that isn't factored into it?) and Guided, I think it is stronger out the box than that one from personal experience
Imo
1. Cavalry Charge
2. Exit from Exile
3. Necron Dynasties
4. Planar Portal
5. Party Time
I move to have a master list of precon decks like the videos you do on commanders. Then a vid every set slotting the new precons! Please??
Ah, Faldorn and Prosper, they work so nicely with Jodah, the Unifier. I wonder if they have anything to do with why my friends hate me?
I follow two accounts on Moxfield, Nitpicking Nerds, and wizards of the coast
Kalamazoo. Also started with deflecting swat
I really like the 3rd host at the beginning
Run a black counter spell. Withering Boon
@@RvBnerd618that's a cool concept that I've never thought about, thanks for the idea.
Love your guys channel never miss a vid! So u have inspired me to start making a mtg utube channel aswell ❤
Calvary charge goes hard.
I cant beleive mind flayers isnt on this list. That deck is CRAZY for a precon. My buddy uses it against some of my custom builds (for fun) and it destroys me.
The AFR decks as a set absolutely slapped
Timestamps would of been nice.
Lorehold Legacies slaps
Cant wait for 2023 best precons! 😊
Awwww the kitty is my favourite host. 🥰
Except for TP,Edgar's deck was very mid
For the 2014 mono green deck: what are some modern day upgrades you would make to the deck??
As a Zombie player, I'm kinda disappointed that Undead Unleashed wasn't on the list, but I also understand that there was a decent amount of janky filler in there.
Cant believe the first sliver deck or the ur dragon deck didnt even make the honorable mentions
No Edgar Markov or Kaalia?
Beezy got possessed by a murloc in the first 2 seconds of the vid 😂
So you are saying Freyalise has elven ramp, elven card draw and elven removal?
i’d like to see a worst precons ever video
What do you think about the LoTR Decks ?
It's not true that the 2014 precon were the only mono colored ones. There is also the Necron deck from the Warhammer precons which is mono black.
maybe finish a video b4 you comment on it XD they said it was the only mono colored release GROUP @ 3:40. Which is true
elves, clues, painbow, edgar markov, and slivers, i rest my case
Enrakul the traveler is my commander for the necron deck
The Wilhelt deck feels like it belongs somewhere up there lol
The throne of eldraine brawl decks were sweet. Not sure if it’s related.
I’m guessing the moxfield ad will be-oh nope I’m wrong.
Atraxa, Arahbo, and Ur Dragon would like a word.
I thought the Urza pre-con from brothers war was insane.
The Velociramptor precon is incredibly strong out of the box and demands answers every turn after Pantlaza hits the board. The discover ability is pretty absurd.
Wilhelt is strong....the milicent ghost one is a banger.......rebellion tokens as well
The video starts in the best way possible: CAT
Coven Counters is vastly underrated.
Oloro, ageless ascetic...
I'm sorry, but how is nothing from 2017 on this list!? Ignoring them automatically makes this list objectively wrong.
What about Mishra's Burnished Banner? This thing rocks
I would think most people would argue that Elven Empire precon is better than Guided by Nature.
Video Idea: best commanders with CMC
I can see it in your eyes.
I need to know!
Where's my boy Wyleth? :( Combat trick tribal at its best!
