  • The Cupra Ateca is a GOLF R in Spanish SUV clothing! So it should be flawless... right?
Well unfortunately this one suffers from some questionable build issues that lead to some frankly annoying rattles. But can we overlook this and recommend the Cupra Ateca SUV? In today's review, we're going to talk about that!

I got mine for 55K drive away in Sydney with a sunroof option demo (1000kms) and I adore this car - that's probably the best price for one of these.
Unless there was a mad deal new on these I wouldn't pay sticker as the demo stock is seeing 10K+ off new which is insane.

Don't diss my new car! LOL. All good. I know it's not perfect but I couldn't find a better performance car for the money. It handles like a dream man, truly.
And in comfort mode ride is sensationally good for segment. Seats so comfy. AND REAL BUTTONS for climate and on wheel. I love that.

I picked one up on the 17th of February on a 6 month subscription. Same colour, plus sunroof. Done 2000ks since we picked it up.
    It's pretty quick.
We spent Friday night just past racing it around with our arteon wagon and model Y. We found a supercharged S4 to play with for a bit. Kept up with it when using launch control.
It's got enough tech for the price. It's very grippy in the corners. Although the AWD system let's lots of wheel slips when using launch. Reminds me of the old arteons AWD.
Sound system's crap! Some how even the bass sounds hollow.
Seats don't offer enough on long journeys and my sides begin to hurt. I like that the bolstering in the front has a lot of give when you get in and out.
My partner sat in the back for a 3 hour trip and said it was better than the front. The lack of electronic seat in the passenger side is a let down.
Only has ambient lighting in the front - dissatisfied with it when you look at the Leon and Forementor.
No exhaust is worth $6K. You can get custom made titanium exhausts for $2 - $3K and choose your own tips.
Road noise is terrible. AC struggles a lot.
My verdict is if you are just racing round town to and from work then it's enough. But if you do any kinda long journeys find something that's not so cheap on the inside and offers better support in the seats.
Don't mind it, but won't keep it once the 6 months is up. Will instead switch to the Leon simply because the interior looks nicer.
Between our arteon or this, I'd still choose the arteon everytime even though it's slightly slower. 😂

The price of these not overly special cars is starting to get eyewatering given that's even before the optional extras are added on to the price.

How's the reliability of this car? I am looking to buy 2022 pre owned vehicle with 30Ks on it.
Is it a huge risk given its a Volkswagen product?
I am considering this over i30n given its a much better daily.
    Any thoughts on reliability?

Being a grumpy old man after a few minutes of thinking about your review I thought why would you buy one? It is an in-between car. Get a two or four door sports car for pure handling and performance or a 4wd for what 4 wheel drives can do. The advertising world has done a good job of making people think they need a compromise car.

Hired one for 5 days with Europcar on the Gold Coast with the wife and kids. Very lazy unless in Sports or Cupra mode. Suspension tuning felt kind of soft. Car does corner pretty flat which is good. Touch points like handles, light switches, stalks, hvac feel pretty cheap. Hvac looks dated. Beats audio doesnt sound very impressive. Cameras are nice tech. Blue seats look ridiculous. Rear seats room is great. The car doesn't feel very wide. Feels like a bigger golf. Boot size was actually OK. My opinions are based in comparing to my 340i, mk7 golf R and 22 audi q5 45 tfsi. Car is a bit overpriced I think. Feels cheap. I wouldn't buy one at full price. Second hand at 50k it would be a buy. Car would age very quickly. Newer car interiors are generations ahead. Also there was no dab radio.

Have the same issue with mine. I have sent it into the service centre numerous times but no fix yet. I spoke to CUPRA Australia recently and it is a known issue that they are working on, but who knows when they’ll have a fix for it. Great car, incredibly frustrating infotainment issue

I also had this problem. For some month it works most of the time completely fine now. I think they fixed it over the air. The reboots are really really rare now! (Tipp: You can manage to stop the endless rebooting by press and hold the ON/OFF Button of the Infotainment for about 30 Seconds. Then it will reboot one last time. This is how you stop the loop 🫡😵‍💫

have driven Ateca for 7000km for now, love the performance. Surely the interior is outdated compared to other Korean and Japanese car, but I think only VW and Cupra can provide this kind of performance at this price range.

I have one, 7,500 km so far, very happy with it, suspension settings excellent and comfortable, it's a sports set-up. Cupra Mode is manic with suspension tightening, gears held onto longer, and engine tune full-on; it's fast, and doesn't run out of brakes even on a race track. I have only a roof, no exhaust or Brembos, saving $10,000. Looking forward to free servicing for three years at my local VW dealer. With no Akropovic exhaust I get a spare tyre instead! BTW, it seems that cupra is latin for copper.

I have done 10,000km in mine. I'm pretty happy with it so far - feels great to drive, love how quick it is off the mark. Even without the Akra exhausts it still sounds pretty good. But what doesn't sound good is the sound system. I have spent a good amount of time tweaking the EQ system on mine but I just cant get the bass to sound right at all. Sounds very tinny and weak (compared to my old Tiguan Wolfsburg with sound and audio package). The beats sound system is probably the biggest let down I have found with the car so far. I'm also missing my engine cover which i'm hoping will be installed when it's time for my free 3 year servicing.

Great review, Jacob! This is probably the least convincing Cupra model-line for me though, to be fair, SUVs aren't really my thing anyway. If I was to buy a Cupra, it would be a Leon VZx all the way - I'd like to think that I was individual-thinking enough to pull it off and go with the challenger brand (I luuuuuurve the copper highlighting) but, when it came time to lay down my cash, I'd probably find myself in a Golf GTi (or T-Roc R if I had to SUV).

Went to check out the Tiguan variants at a local dealer that also had Cupra as well. Very disappointed in both brands. Too much hard scratchy plastic everywhere for the price and once you add all options, definitely makes it look very bad vs the competition. Decided on the new Outback XT in top spec. Cheaper and feels way more premium than any of the VW group stuff at the same price range.

@ 2:26: The term CUPRA comes from European motorsport. In the late 90s there were brand cups with the compact cars SEAT LEON and SEAT IBIZA. The cars in each series were identical and they were built by SEAT. They took a production vehicle, modified the engine and chassis, and installed a roll bar and a fire extinguisher. The CUPRAcer was ready. Later, this name was taken as a synonym for the sportiest variant of a series. Since 2018, CUPRA has been a separate brand at SEAT under the management of VOLKSWAGEN.
