  • The most common questions we get about our motorcycles revolve around the engine. In this parts talk, Richard goes into detail on why Janus chose this motor for the 250 motorcycle line, its fascinating history, and a bit of what it took to get an air-cooled, carbureted engine through EPA and the CARB.

    The fact that you guys are willing to do videos like this that are so transparent really tipped my scales towards buying a Janus bike. I'm excited to become a customer within the next year or so.

      Hello fellow internet-goer, I'm personally looking into getting a Janus at some point in the next year, hopefully with the money I'll earn with the army, I was curious if you ever ended up getting that bike, and I'm anxious to hear your experience with it so I can make an informed purchase from a unbiased party, and a source that wouldn't benefit from a positive review

      Lifan makes a 250 cc V-Twin based on the Yamaha Virago 250, they could easily have adapted this cam/valves and cylinder design to this arrangment. Their Virago clone is undersquare and has OHC. so there's potential for bigger bores and displacement. You can buy a Roadster clone of this Lifan V-twin from SSR called the Buccaneer 250.

    The CB 125 with a single overhead cam single cylinder 125cc motorcycle I know I bought one to keep for putting miles on my Classics just to go back and forth to work on when I was 129 lb it would go 77 miles an hour down to Gulf Freeway all day long flat out. Because it was a Honda I didn't worry about it screaming going down the freeway. I sold it to a guy for his daughter's 14th birthday because of Texas you can ride a 125 or less when you're 14 with a learner's permit. That little bike taught a lot of people how to ride a motorcycle and introduce them to the pleasures of two wheels.

    Although I’m late to the party to comment I must say the power and drive train are more than properly vetted. The overall durability and reliability is globally proven with multiple markets. It is an excellent choice. Well done Janus. The fact that it is backed by an outstanding warranty is further confidence between the design and build. I’m saving for my Halcyon 250 as I finally retire in March 24.

    People complain about the price because it’s a Chinese engine but, what you get is a very well thought out design hand made custom motorcycle. The same people would spend $80,000 on a custom chopper without hesitation!!

      @frankmarkovcijr5459 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The amount of people that would spend $80,000 on the Choppers long Dead and Gone. To sell a $15,000 motorcycle with a cheap Chinese built engine is just simply Unthinkable in my opinion.

      A replacement engine can be had ( probably with the OHC version as an option ) for less than $1K, usually way less.

    These "Part's Talks" really are great and help to allay the concerns and fears that many of us have concerning your bikes. So great idea to be proactive on that front. I love the air-cooled engines and would not want anything liquid cooled. You guys have nailed it and should rightfully be proud with what you've done.
    That said, I really would like to see EFI and maybe an engine option approaching 400cc... not for "performance", but simply because where I live (in steep mountains), the 250cc bikes just don't have the puff to keep up momentum. I have a Suzuki TU250X and love the bike, (engine is very similar to yours). But it's just not enough if I want to go touring through my mountain passes.

    I would just like to add: The CG engines didn't exactly evolve directly to the 230cc ("250cc") engine.
    It went to a 150, and then a 200cc, this was accomplished with boring and stroking the crankshaft. Notably a small machine shop in Bend, Oregon back in the early 1970's was the first to experiment with Honda's little Thumpers. They would rebuild the old OHC CB100~125 by boring and stroking out to them 150 and 175~190CC respectively. PowRoll was their name. They're not in business any more.
    Secondly with careful engine crank balancing, a balance shaft is not really that necessary. I own a Lifan 200 cc bike with the same design engine without the balance shaft, and I will say this, it is smoother that one of the oldest OHC Italian singles. The Ducati bevelgear 250. And the Duc engine was noted for being a very smooth running thumper engine. The little Lifan is fine up through 8500 rpm. Although it's a little buzzy from 6500, but not what I would consider bad. My '68 Honda CL350 was worse.

      My CG150 isn’t broken-in yet but so far the vibration doesn’t seem bad at all in the bars, do feel it in the seat though, which is a little odd. Nice engine ( RPS Condor 150 ) has kick start which I believe does start it with a totally dead battery.

    Why not made in USA? Because no such engine exists. Honda designed this engine from the get-go to be build under license in Third World countries. It's supposed to be simple, reliable and hard to screw up. Very few Honda-made examples ever existed.

    It is a pity though that a 350cc engine is not available for those of us with more experience and how shall we say, are a bit more gravitationally enhanced.

    • @tauncfester3022
      @tauncfester3022 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The bored 350 version of this engine would probably be far too big to fit into the same bike frame That engine is also only available as an ATV crate engine and doesn't make much more power than the 230. 13K buys you the Halcyon 400 or you can buy the Genuine 400 for much less.

      It's unethical to buy Chinese products considering how it supports such a regime! They are not a free market. A regime that has direct ownership in the companies that sell internationally. Not only does it undercut our workforce but it undercuts the free world. To get an organ for transplant involves waiting a long time anywhere else but not in China. They will actually take orders for particular dates to operate. Very convenient but not for the unwilling donors who have been forcibly harvested. They are also spying the sh&t out of the US and the West. Their sweatshop practices, pollution and constant patent infringement really bring savings to the consumer!
      Damn it's hard not to buy totalitarian products.

  • @thegodhoward8037

    I still believe that you should try to increase your engine size and find a manufacturer somewhere else other than China expesualy in times like these i recommend checking countries such as India Malaysia who both have cheaper manufacturing prices and have multiple engine manufacturers that still do not yet supply any bikes to the US so you will not have to worry about being supplied by a competitor

      I agree entirely but in a replica early 20th century design the choke adds to the experience and the engine seems to run just fine even by modern standards. I own a Kawasaki Z125 Pro with EFI. Even so, it stumbles and needs a few seconds to sort itself out on a cold start.
