What a shame it's the end of Season 9. I hope you have other seasons of SS that's never ever seen before on TH-cam.

Does anyone else know if the band stayed for the whole show
You can't see them silhouetted at the end of the show
Seems a waste to have them sit there for an hour

They did indeed - they are playing the end credits theme live every time. Sadly, this is the last appearance of the live orchestra - by Series 10, they were consigned to history. . But in Series 9, a wonderful anachronism Wonderful complex stuff going on behind the scenes for things that almost nobody even noticed. For example, in the end credits I think Cilla is live until "...and the nicest surprise in my life is you!" and then she becomes pre-recorded so she can interact with guests off camera while the credits roll - the live orchestra continue playing the theme until the end. There are also some fascinating differences in the orchestration each time - for example, Episode 9 is electric-guitar heavy, there's a new keyboard line going on, the sax solo is different, and the brass mess up a little just before the transition to credits. Episode 8 is a little more musical theatre, and the timpanist goes HARD at the end of the announcement section. (Incidentally, if anybody ever wondered what that lovely little 18 second "no vocals" bit is about... it's designed to "clear a space" for a continuity announcer, so s/he can come in without treading on lyrics - notice how half the time, in the clips on TH-cam, they miss it, come in late, and are still yammering on by the time the LWT logo appears!
There was a democracy, a sense of measure and respect in TV production then. Did they have to go to that amount of trouble? No, they could've just played a tape. They did from Series 10. But in 9, Ray Monk and his orchestra really did show up every week, to play the opening and closing credits theme, stingers, and occasionally accompany a guest... At best they were on camera for fifteen seconds before the door closes. Occasionally you can see them in silhouette at the end, but not often... but they're there, adding atmosphere to what was at the time event television. It could never happen now. Nowadays we're lucky if there are live musicians on a live music show, let alone on here...

@@ergleburgle8882On some other series for finales and series premiers they'd use a slightly altered theme song. Maybe a small band behind the scenes or a specially made pre recording
