Was interested in your comments about developing internal pulse vs relying on metronome. Do you caution against overuse of metronome? Do you think overuse of the metronome leads to robotic playing?
Good questions. My concern is really about a student's well-rounded musicianship, and the fact that they must feel a pulse internally and be able to play in a steady tempo without the aid of an external source. The metronome cannot TEACH pulse. It can only be a check on it from the outside. Because I am so concerned with developing pulse and rhythmic skills, as well as expressive playing, from early on in the learning process, I don't worry too much about "robotic" playing with my students.
Good video and a wonderful piece! 🙂
