- Being the resident Type Moon fanatic, I decided to take the time and discuss at length my thoughts on the new show, how it compares to the Visual Novel source material and a few other things.
This is officially my favorite analysis for UBW. Thank you so much for elaborating on the ridiculous non-issues that so many people have complained about. I especially agree when you said it's not fair to compare it to F/Z yet. I actually rewatched the first season of F/Z and the episodes for UBW kind of parallel with them, most specifically is that they both ended with cliffhangers dealing with Caster as the main focus. F/Z ended right when a giant battle was about to begin with Caster and as Saber is about to attack, the show ends abruptly. At least in UBW we are given a clear and fair finale where we can anticipate what will happen next instead of being left empty right before something good happens. Another thing I enjoyed was how you explained the conversation with Rin and Shirou during episode 11. I never knew that she meant the boundary fields as her personality and Shirou's, but I did still get the general idea of it. It's just great to finally see someone that can full heartedly defend my favorite route and series like you just did.
Kirk Tran Yeah I actually forgot to mention that the way cour 1 ended for UBW was a huge improvement over F/Z which was more annoying than anything else. I remember watching that episode and thinking to myself "fuck off I have to wait 3 months now!?" UBW had a much greater sense of finality. Anyways I am glad you dug the video man!
TheAnimeRoom I marathoned F/Z a year after it was finished airing so I have no idea how that must've felt but UBW's finale left me anxious since I read the visual novel, and it's only gonna better from here on out. Thanks btw, I actually found this channel by mere coicidence but I'm very glad that I found it. xD

As a fan of the VN I was very impressed with this show. Rin one of my all time favorite characters finally got justice in this show and the rest of the characters were perfectly represented to. I personally didnt have any problems with the lack of monologues. I felt the show carried its own way pretty well. This probably has to be my favorite show of 2014 and I cannot wait till the 2nd half.
Tha King Gaming This and Parasyte are easily in my eyes the best anime of the year without a doubt.
Personally I loved the soundtrack, or rather the character themes, I think they just fit the characters perfectly. For the most part.
To those wondering where my video on Cour 2 is, I've been re-reading the Visual Novel in order to refresh myself on it (since it's been about 5-6 years since I last finished it) aswell as to more properly assess the show as an adaptation. I might also wait to re-watch it when the blu-rays come out but I am not certain on that yet With that in mind, thank you for your patience.
Awesome overview Shintai, I agree with everything you said. Also wow I had no idea that 90 minutes of content had to be removed during the shows runtime thanks for letting us know about that. I agree on the wait to man that sucks, but what can you you do right. Personally Shirou is my favorite Fate character overall and seeing him in this route is epic, also looking forward to a certain fight with him in the second half, and the animation I know will be epic.
AnimeWolf7 Yup, the uncut episodes when they release the blu rays are going to warrant a re-watch. Ufotable did something similar with Fate/Zero where a lot of frames were re-drawn and a few scenes were added, but I don't think it was nearly on this scale. I am also really looking forward to seeing the beautiful visuals and awesome fight choreography uftoable has in store for us during the more epic moments in the second cour.
Awesome, I look forward to it but I'm waiting to get both parts when the english dub comes out which I'm guessing will be ether near the end of this year or somewhere around next year.
AnimeWolf7 I am kind of curious as to whether they'll use any of the voice actors from the Deen adaptaitons, or if they're simply going to go with entirely new actors. I am guessing they're gonna go with different people to distance themselves from it.
Same here, a few characters I would like to have their old voices back would be Archer, Shinji(hate him al lot by the way), Rider, Rin, and Taiga.

For the sake of continuity they need to keep the recurring characters from F/Z the same to avoid confusion.
Wonderful Overview! I whole heartly agree with almost everything you said. I do think however that since they are trying to adapt ~30+ hours of text into 20 min, 25 ep anime that they should have left out some of the SoL parts and have Shirou's monologues as they (imo) are more important than the normal everyday talks that the VN had plenty of. I guess we have to wait for the blue rays to see if they add those in.
Also they lefted out a lot about how the 'magic' works in the nasuverse. I know that magic is still fantasy, but Nasu really takes the time to develop those fantasy elements and it's really complex where magic isn't as limitless as it is in shows like Fairy Tail. For example ep 10 looked like an asspull b/c they didn't take the time to explain projection and why Shirou doesn't resort to it in a fight.
xendingalot They explained the projection after he used it as to why he doesn't normally use it, but I think they should have shown Shirou in the shed using the projection magic so it wouldn't have been seen as an asspull.
TheAnimeRoom that too but it was referring to a scene where they discussed the 5 beginner magecraft and how projection under normal circumstances would be very useless in most situations. that way the audience knows that shirou can use projection but normally it would not do much for him until the explaination for reality marbles and UBW itself.
Yes! I was so hoping you were gonna give your thoughts on Cour 1! But wonderful video Shintai! And thanks so much for elaborating on certain things that a lot of people were hating on either because they didn't understand or they just, like you said, don't know the difference between a preference and a legitimate problem with the show. And that is a problem that I think certain reviews I've seen have had, like for one (not hating on the website BTW), SeventhStyle.com. Whenever I go there to see their episode reviews its like they bash certain elements of the show because they don't like as they say, Run being a generic tsundere, or the useless slice of life scenes, or the inevitable high school setting (again not hating on SS). But your overview I think is something I can really relate with because I really like the slice of life moments and the show as a whole. Great video Shintai and see you in your next vid!
Oblivion Recorder Well I am gonna hate on SS, I think they're a shitty site with click bait titles and dishonest articles. They go from calling the show "vigorous" to "unbearable" I don't respect that site at all. Getting off that though it's definitely a big issue when it comes to not understanding the different between legitimate criticism and preference. I am completely fine with people not liking the show because it's not their thing and while sure the show does have some issues, I am not a fanboy that thinks it's perfect. That being said most of the arguments I see for why it's a bad show are really laughable.

Whenever i heard people dismissing this work just because it has Ero content, you might as well dismiss 90% of HBO shows. F/SN, even the Visual Novel barely has any Sex scene at all like what Shintai said. This prejudice is just laughable. Plus, Nasu is fucking terrible at sex scenes either way that you'll just laugh instead of feeling aroused or some shit.
I loved how you rip this complains into pieces Shintai. F/SN is not a perfect Visual novel nor it's a perfect show. There is no perfect work. But some of this complaints are just downright stupid. Highschool setting? Parasyte has a High school setting and nobody gives a flying fuck about that. High school setting will be forever in Anime, Manga, Visual Novel, Light Novels and there is nothing we can do about it. High school setting is as natural as Fanservice, Spiky Hairs, and hairs with unnatural color in this medium.
And i'm surprised you didn't talked about the claim of F/SN being "Sexist". SJWs and Feminazis had already infected the world with their cancerous shit and it reached this fandom. This is why i don't visit large sites like MAL, ANN(The IGN and Kotaku of anime/manga) and others. I might get Ebola.
Parasyte actually has come under criticism for its high school setting too. Probably not as this much because of the fact that it's not a sequel to and anime that didn't feature them. It's mainly a thing with modern anime. Older anime didn't feature them as much. Most anime I watch is pretty old though, so the setting doesn't stand out as much to me.
The feminazi and SJWs are not even worth talking about. I'd imagine that's why he didn't bother.

I totally agree with you that some complaints are really idiotic. One of the worst that wasn't mentioned here was that 'Saber doesn't have a personality!'. Granted, its not a very 'repeated' complaint, but it is the worst I have heard so far- and I've heard more that FIVE people say it (or, type it)! e_e

I loved ufotable's FSN it was amazing, can't wait for cour 2. Although the one thing I liked in Fate/Zero more was the multiple perspectives of all the masters, you usually don't see that in battle royale type anime, but I get why they can't do that with FSN being based on a visual novel.
kuro snivy The visual novel puts you in the perspective of someone literally being thrown into something he has no idea about and he's literally forced to adapt to it. In F/Z all of the masters (except for Ryounosuke) knew about the war going into it. F/SN does a good job of putting you in the shoes of someone being blindsided by the insanity of the Holy Grail War. F/Z's ensemble cast perspective was great for F/Z because the story was written to support it. However alternative with F/SN it was written to supports its perspective aswell.

Man, it's refreshing coming across a video like this after the waves and waves of the same tired, ignorant arguments for "why this is an inferior sequel to Fate/Zero" that I've been suffering through. Thank you for defusing the frustration that's been building up these past couple of weeks.
I mean, there are plenty of valid complaints about the show I've seen too, and I understand how jarring it can be for the people coming in blind from Fate/Zero, but I've long since lost patience for the more obnoxious critics who just state their biased opinions as fact and try and advise others to follow their lead.

As for the video itself, I agree completely with pretty much everything you said. I think you got a little bit too caustic at the end there, but as a VN reader myself, having read the same arguments time after time after time after time, I can't exactly fault you for venting a little.^^
The two things I'm a little more mixed on are the soundtrack and some of the stuff on the fight scenes.
For the soundtrack, I really am missing a lot of the tracks from the VN, especially Emiya, All Evils of the World/Church on the Hill, Light and Darkness, and the instrumental This Illusion. Granted, most of those shouldn't have come up yet anyway, but at this point I'm very doubtful we'll get to hear the majority of them. Mighty Wind is another one, but I'll happily settle for seeing Sparks Liner High get animated at all. That being said, I actually really like some of the songs from the new soundtrack and think they fit the mood really well. Archer's theme is awesome, it suits him really well, and is just familiar enough to its VN equivalent to satisfy my nostalgia. I'm also in the minority of people that genuinely enjoyed 'Wubzerker'.^^ I think it's because it reminded me of all the dubstep during late Season 1 JoJo, with all the Pillar Men shenanigans, and let's face it, Berserker is basically a Pillar Man.
For the fight scenes, I understand that adapting them down to the last detail would be dumb, and would take away a lot of the urgency and excitement, but my inner geek can't help but get a little pissy when those changes make characters seem way more powerful/weak than they're supposed to be. The main example I've seen is Saber being able to kill Berserker with Invisible Air while Archer's Caladbolg II did virtually nothing, but the thing that really rubbed me the wrong way was Shirou's sudden burst of badassery against Kuzuki. In the Visual Novel his traced swords break after one good punch and he still goes down like a jobber, which makes a lot more sense to me, because projection is still fairly new to him. Seeing not only the swords hold up against Kuzuki's super-fists, but Shirou also suddenly being capable of what looked like Servant-level combat prowess for a brief moment, bothered me a lot. I get why they spiced up the scene, and it was really cool but, he's *supposed* to be sucky right now, it kind of takes away from his future achievements if he's already this good.
Anyway, I'll definitely be referring back to this video whenever I need some relief from all the ignorance floating around the internet recently.^^
Looking back on the audio, especially towards the end I felt like I should have cut out my overuse of swearing. I was definitely flustered though so hopefully I can be forgiven..XD
I liked Wubzerker too and I don't even really like dubstep all that much to be honest.The music like I said in the video isn't bad, it's mostly good just not amazing. There are stand out pieces here and there; the opening is really good, Archer's theme, some of the battle themes but otherwise the soundtrack just sort of hangs back and tries to be very unobtrusive, too much for its own good.
The thing with Archer's Caladbolg though is that in the VN the reason it didn't do anything was *specifically* because Berserker deflected it. I think Ufot screwed up in not showing Berserker at least raising his sword to block it or something. Maybe it will be in that extra 90 minutes on blu ray? As for Shirou, I have less of an issue with him becoming that strong and more of an issue of the projection not being as foreshadowed. In the anime it kind of comes off as an asspull when it isn't at all. I do appreciate that they had a reasonable explanation afterwards as to why he really didn't talk about or use it much BUT I think a simple scene of Shirou in his shed failing at strengthening and using projection to cool off would have alleviated the perception of it being an asspull. Hell he could have done that shortly after he failed to do it with Saber being around. Saber made him nervous (and who can blame him, she' such a cutie XD) so it would have made sense for him to do some projection magic afterwards to calm himself down.
Anyways, really glad to hear you enjoyed the video and are now integrating it to your F/SN stress relief program XD

Like I said, I've been through enough of those kinds of arguments to sympathize, you can't really be blamed for indulging in some good ol' catharsis.
I think I get what you mean about the soundtrack too. Save for the select three or four tracks that I'll be looking for when the OST gets released, I am having a hard time actually recalling much about the music at all. That hadn't really occured to me until now. I suppose it is a little too low-key.
The lack of foreshadowing for projection really bothered me too, but I didn't mention it because I've seen surprisingly few people actually call asspull on it. This is like my 6th time going over the UBW story in some shape or form and so my brain tends to switch off when I recognize a scene and already know the gist of it, so I figured there _was_ some foreshadowing and I must have just missed it. Guess not.^^
BDsprite I think there was *some* foreshadowing, such as Shirou mentioning to Saber that his magic works better on blades, but not enough I think to really get across that projection magic was something Shirou always knew how to use.
This guys is bringing justice into place.

Laka knight People are reacting to it in the exact way I did about 5 years ago when I read the VN.
Getting shafted by poor decisions is a type-moon fan's life story. Most of them just don't realize it.
The best review of UBW I've seen so far. You explained the problems and the greatness of the show, in a really objective way. I agree with most of what you said, especially the last part of the video where you dismissed those retarded arguments that F/Z elitists and VN fanboys use. I read the VN myself and thought it was amazing, it's my #2 VN, and I also liked how Ufotable dealt with the first part of the series. The SoL felt a bit more intrusive than in the VN, sure, and the monologues were missing (something I noticed very early on in the anime), but other than that, I don't see all these problems that people talk about. I watched F/Z first and only read the VN after that, and I find arguments like "It's not as mature as F/Z" or "Characters aren't as well developed" and ESPECIALLY "Urobuchi Gen wrote a story better than Nasu".
For one thing, Nasu created Kiritsugu, Kotomine, etc, whether they like it or not, the only original characters Gen came up with were Rider and Ryuunosuke. And when they say that the characters aren't as well developed: a) They're comparing a full show to a half-completed show, b) The development in F/SN is a bit more subtle, and they're probably so worried about criticizing the anime that they don't even notice the development, like Rin's dialogue in episode 11 or the dialogue between Shirou and the female classmate, where she says he is broken. As for not being mature enough, they say it's because they're highschoolers, but does age have anything to do with maturity? No! The ideology parts of F/SN are as good or better than in F/Z, and just because the characters aren't adults, that doesn't mean they can't have internal conflicts or something to say. And finally, F/Z was more focused on the "Death game aspect" of the war, why F/SN focuses more on the inside conflict of the characters that take the spotlight each route, in this case Shirou and Rin, and later Archer.
Anyway, amazing video, watched all of it and really appreciated to hear what you had to say. Subscribed ;)
Diogo Desterro Honestly I am tired of the constant comparisons of not only F/SN to F/Z but of Nasu to Urobutchi. While ostensibly, yes I do prefer Nasu, it is just that, a preference. I don't see why people feel the need to prove that it's a fact that one is a better writer than the other.If you enjoy their work, just enjoy it. They're different writers with their own strengths and weaknesses just like any other writer. Anyways getting off that, good to hear you dug the video. =)

Great video there is so much ignorance coming from people whose only type moon experience has been fate zero. Everyone praising fate zero and shitting on fate stay/night needs to see this video. Fate zero is great but fate stay/night is the main dish.

Go back to episode 11, and watch the scene at the end, beginning from around 19:50 towards the end of the episode. A very slow version of Emiya is playing in the background.

finally someone who admits that they cant be compared. they are two completely different types of media and trying to argue which one is better just goes round in circles. I mean I like Zero more but that's just personal preference it doesn't automatically mean its better the only way we could ever compare them would be if the animated some kind of joined route.
I very insightful overview, even as a VN reader I can't believe I never thought about the 4th holy grail war ending as it did resulting in the masters being younger in the 5th war. It was never really a big complaint of mine that the characters are teenagers though. However I will never understand why people have such a problem with the fact that there are sex scenes, I mean Shirou and all the heroines are at the age where sex is kind of common and its not like the sole purpose of the game was to be fap material. Why the fuck would I read through hours of content just to get to one sex scene just so I could masturbate, that is the most ridiculous thing in the world to think, anyways I hardly see it as a problem at all. I also get tired of the unfair comparisons to Fate/Zero and people can't accept that they are different from each other. The 4th war was what the holy grail war was supposed to be like and the 5th war is the fucked up result of how the 4th war ended.
One problem I kinda do see is knowledge of Fate is kind of helpful in understanding things more, like why Shirou heals so quickly or why he was able to summon Saber at all. I guess it won't be too much of an issue in UBW, might be more so in HF.
Jason Frates In a perfect world, Deen would have never touched the Fate route and we would have instead gotten a FULL adaptation of the VN for all 3 routes. Sadly that isn't the case and we have the UBW and HF routes getting adaptations which makes the void of the Fate route causing some issues.
A pretty big dislike for me was the lack of "oomph" that the soundtrack had. It's passable, definitely, I wouldn't have done a better job even with a good education in musical composition, but it feels like there's this beast that the composer has inside him that he refuses to unleash.
He looooves using orchestral instruments, and don't get me wrong, I love strings in compositions, they are completely integral. But so far all I've heard from his compositions were strings, minimal percussion instruments, minimal low brass, piano at peaceful tracks, and that one electronic riff in the Saber vs Berserker fight.
Other composers like Yuki and Hiroyuki like to use some higher brass instruments, as in trumpets and well, wind instruments like flutes and saxophones. Guitar is used in some iconic tracks, like in Battle to the Strong in Fate Zero, and I feel that the tracks could use some of these things.
So far, he's done an okay job with the tracks, I mean, they were good in a sense that they fill in the void needed in anime, but it just doesn't feel... I dunno, exhilarating. I have high hopes for what will come in the 2nd cour, but this is one nitpick that I won't let go of.for this 1st cour.

The wait will be long, but in April we will have new Fate AND new Gintama. My body is so ready

This video was amazing! As a VN reader, I had a lot of the same problems that you did, dealing with people that thought Rin was a "typical tsundere" and people hating on the show because of the slice-of-life scenes. There was even a person who made a video telling not to watch Unlimited Blade Works 2014 and that it's horrible because it has slice-of-life scenes. I liked it for the most part, except for the lack of remixes, like you said. I expected more from the composer of Witch On The Holy Night, because the tracks were really great for that VN. I hope that the composer adds a lot of remixes next season, and I hope the quality of the music improves. I only heard that the new 90 minutes was a rumor, but it's confirmed, which is great! That means a little more than 7 minutes added each episode! I can't wait for the uncut episodes, and I feel like the director did a great job of adding in facial expressions in some parts(some too exaggerated) but I definitely feel like they could've added more internal monologues for Shirou so that the anime-only watchers could understand his character more. Next season we DEFINITELY need inner monologues or the show is going to be screwed up during the second to last fight and in other parts. Of course, the visuals are made by Ufotable, so they're amazing. I hope that next season they look even better, though(but it'll be really hard to top). The dialogue felt simpler to me than in the VN, but that's expected from an anime(not really an issue for me.) I wish that there was more explanation of magic in the anime, though. The blu-ray and season 2 are going to be a long wait(Blu-ray comes out in late March at a ridiculous price but I'll still be buying it ($400 USD)and season 2 comes out in Early April ;_;

Ruri Gokou The director Miura is a great visual director, which is why I am confused as to why Ufotable thought he would be a good pick considering how monologue heavy the VN is. Ufotable clearly has other great directors as we have seen from Kara no Kyoukai.In his defense though he has done mostly a really good job and it might just be that the cut content will address some of the more major issues Also, Ruri is best girl, just throwing that out there.

Yep, Kara No Kyoukai was great. He has done a really good job with this series though. I definitely hope that the cut scenes will fix the problems, and thank you for the compliment ^_^
to be honest, I felt Rin was a bit too tsundere in the adaptation until ep 11 were they properly portrayed her personality and character. Rin was never really a tsundere until the later parts of UBW and all other times would have her miss perfect personality so I was hoping Ufotable would rid Rin of that architype.
xendingalot Ufotable did amp her "tsundereness" for this adaptation, but I didn't mind it because it wasn't too over the top and it's still in line with her characterization.
xendingalot I don't even think her Tsundere aspect was really upped much. I think people assume this because there is so much content in the VN that her Tsundere moments are spaced out drastically
Only thing I dislike is how the show is so laid back compared to Fate Zero. Like I hated how the characters would say "lets call it a day" its like they are not taking the actual Holy Grail War seriously, when in Fate Zero characters went to farther lengths when fighting each other. Fate Zero characters felt more scheming and serious when it came to the actual war. Mostly because the Fate Zero characters were basically adults and didn't go through the generic high school crap or drama Stay Night characters go through. Sure Stay Night has its serious moments but they feel minimal compared to its other none serious elements. It gets old when Rin, Saber or Archer have to remind Shirou how much of a big deal the war is.
PKDeviluke25 The only reason it appears more "laid back" is because F/SN has a main perspective point of view as opposed to the ensemble cast point of view in F/Z. By doing this and focusing on certain character they become very fleshed out but we also get to see most of what they do. F/Z's ensemble approach only focuses on specific things certain characters were doing instead of following them around all the time. If for example F/Z decided to focus on Rider and Waver exclusively, you would have the exact same complaint. It isn't that the war isn't being taken seriously, but how can you try to live a normal life if you have the war on the brain 24/7? As far as the scheming however, what Caster has done in UBW has FAR outdone almost anything anyone Fate/Zero did. The HGW is almost like childs play to her and she has asserted her dominance more than anyone in F/Z hoped to have done. As for the high school crap or drama....... what? The school setting is an irrelevant backdrop that only appears on occasion. I don't even know what you mean by "high school drama" as there really isn't any. At most there was that one scene where it was a big deal that Tohsaka wanted to have lunch with Shirou, not a long scene at all I am also confused about this complaint of reminding Shirou of how big a deal the war is? literally the last time this was addressed was when Rin attacked Shirou several episodes ago. Also Archer is more keen on berating Shirou for his childish ideals than anything else.

Rin from the get go kept going to school because she OBVIOUSLY knew there was a very high chance of another master being at the school if she had stopped going she would have alerted the enemy immediately and sure enough she discovers the blood fort barrier. while playing cat and mouse with the master at the school she forms an alliance with another master in order to be able to deal with the two biggest threats on the board that being berserker and caster. this is just merely 1 example. and to be fair some of it is a lot more clear in hindsight.

Sorry to disappoint but there is no 90+ minutes of extra content, that extra time is them counting the soundtrack length, which I believe they also did for Fate/Zero. So basically the same show as on TV with a couple of extended scenes.

Micah Delgado I would be a massive hypocrite to go against what I said in the video because of this. It was certainly slimy of Anipalex to include the runtime of the OST and given the false impression that we were getting tons of episode content, but the show is still enjoyable regardless. I will say however that the Blu Rays are a rip off though. $400 for something you can watch for free on Crunchyroll? No thank you, I have better things to spend my money on. =P
All I have to say is really fucking awesome Shintai really thank you it was the best I've seen. I really enjoyed this overview of Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works I cannot wait until I buy the Blu ray Soon as possible and rewatching it Ufotable is really on their A game and as well showing off everything that they can do. Shirou Emiya is my favorite character in the whole Fate series and I really love and enjoy his character in this vision I liked how we know more about his powers and how dangers they are as well to understand what he is going though. as for Rin Tohsaka she is my second favorite character of the Fate series she really smart and beautiful as well such a badass epic women I agree that everyone who gives Rin shit should shut the fuck up because for one a lot of people really miss out on what Rin has been though I'm Fate/Zero and her own route for one she lost her mother and father as well she really hates herself for not being able to help or save Sakura as well feeling like she and Sakura can never be sisters again witch is why I can't wait to see Heaven's Feel I really love Sakura Matou as well she is tied with Rin to me she really wants to be with Shirou and have a great life but some people don't seem to understand that what happened to Sakura is really unfair and not right she went though the most hell and it makes me feel so angry that they don't give her a chance at least some people have a good reason to why they don't like her I'm alright with that it's pretty much the same reason as for Rin that she just a childhood friend who does nothing but that isn't true because in Heaven's Feel Sakura does a lot of things witch I won't say I cannot wait to see Heaven's Feel because it is my favorite route period llya has been treated as a great character and to see her fight for a change was really good i love that she learned her mother Irisviel Von Einzbern moves and made them stronger sad to say I know what will happen in the second half of the anime witch sucks. I really dislike that some people say Fate/Stay Night is just a hentai game it's not true yeah there some sex in Heaven's Feel Fate and one in Unlimited Blade Works but that's no reason to go hate on it they are not going to go out of their way to show us sex it's just childish reason because it doesn't really take away from the storyline and how the characters act. For the most part I seen all of the Visual Novel and I do agree that the fights were short same as Fate/Zero but it's a good way not bad but since UBW is the most action route and where Shirou and the others fight at is new is a nice change of pace I know UBW is not fully completely done but I really love Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works but that's just me. I cannot wait to see what the second half has for us and to see how Shirou Rin Saber and Artcher can really do I know it's going to be full of epicness that makes me cry of full on joy. If I'm wrong on somethings I'm sorry about that.

Great video. Interestingly enough, episode 17 finally had a few Shirou monologues. Hopefully, this will continue in the coming episodes. Overall though, UBW was always a monologue-heavy route, and not being able to fully include those monologues has hurt this adaptation. I still think this is a great show, but I feel like it's closer to a 9/10 than the 10/10 it could have been.
Avenger I think when looking at the show as a stand alone experiences it's pretty great, but as an adaption it's mostly solid but fails to deliver on some the key aspects that made the visual novel special in the first place. That's still a helluva lot better than most other Type-Moon adaptations not done by ufotable themselves. Oh and Carnival Phantasm, which is pure gold.
I really felt like the slow pacing in the first season didn't add anything to the characters things such as going on a damn date during a death tournament is too ridiculous for me to believe

Nice overview Shintai and I agree with everything you said and yeah the soundtrack is not that great, I personally think Fate Kaleid had a better soundtrack than FSN. I hope the EMIYA theme sounds amazing when Shirou fights Archer and when Shirou fights Gilgamesh. I also hope the Saber Alter theme sounds amazing too in the Heaven's Feel movie.
JayKay 26 I think the OST peaks during fight scenes, and can really add to it, but overall the soundtrack is just good, not great. Also even though the track only plays during Sparks Liner High, I'd love to hear a remix of Mighty Wind.
Yea the music compliments the scenes but it doesn't add more them or gives the show its own unique feel. It is getting better though (OST in ep 10 felt way stronger than OST in ep 0).
Is the Cour 2 video still a possibility? I'd like to hear your thoughts on it. I personally believe that the show dipped in the second half. While there were still some fantastic moments (end of answer specifically) a lot of other things just didn't hold up. I thought shirou was repeating himself a lot which I guess is UFOtable trying to make up for the lack of monologues but I don't think it was handled in the best way. The soundtrack also wasn't used to its full potential imo. An example would be the emiya theme itself. I LOVE the new version, i think it's one of the best versions to date but It was used in underwhelming 10-15 second bursts which defeated the purpose of it tbh. I'm glad it was used properly in the final exchange between shirou and gil but there was a lost opportunity there I felt. There are other gripes I have with it such as shirous development not being handled as well as it should have been but i'll stop now. still a very enjoyable show for us vn readers though I think had I seen it without reading the source material, I'd be a little disappointed.

John Rhogan Well that's what I am going to do because I love Fate and I want to see all the episodes as they air and then see what all the extra content is on the blu rays after the fact. However I just think that if you're not a huge fan and you're just getting into Fate, waiting for the blu rays instead of watching them weekly is just the better option in terms of pacing and getting a more overall complete experience.
I'm starting to see why people have a problem with the recent episode. I've checked the sources and the original novel for this but feel free to add in your input.

The whole Magic Crest Transplant actually breaks the lore of the 2004 version of the novel (I think they are upset that either A no sex or B. no kiss [Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya managed to do the prana transfer while keeping in PG rated with the kissing]).
Realta Nua, however, changes the H-scene into what we see int he anime. This is generally what Type-Moon and Nasu are going with as canon now. The problem is, after reading the 2004 novel, this contradicts the lore: transplanting a Magic Crest between Rin and Shirou would have killed Shirou. This was explained in the Fate/Zero light novels too. However, Realta Nua and, recently, Mahou Tsukai no Yoru retcons this fact.
This would also change a bit of characterization with the Matou family. Sakura would turn into this alter form of herself just because Shinji tugged on her arm a little too hard instead of being raped? The abuse is there, mind you, but it seems a little forced.
I think this needs a clarification when you do a cor 2 review of Fate. This argument is going in circles on youtube and reddit.
BradleyMcCloud Well what we see in the anime is also what we see in the H alt for the PS2 and PSVita versions. Now I don't remember anything about transferring the magic crest resulting in death if I am being honest but I haven't read in a few years. I actually plan on re-reading it before the cour 2 video. Anyways, even if that was the original lore I don't see how it's that big of an issue to change it honestly unless I am forgetting something. As for Shinji, even if Realta Nua retconned the rape, it's implied even in this adaption that Shinji abuses her physically, much more than just tugging her arm. Although I do find it funny that the parody series Carnival Phantasm implied there was rape Now that being said,. I think Heaven's Feel would suffer more from the lack of sex compared to the other two routes. In the other routes the sex always felt forcefully shoved in (no pun intended) for the sake of just having them. HF is where it was actually implemented well.

That's what I'm worried about for Heavens Feel. I'm unsure if they will go full on with the RN version or use the original and just imply it or fade the screen to black. On top of that, they might only do one movie since Type-Moon got the green light to have a Heavens Feel manga a few months ago. They might just do the series on that.
Though most fans on reddit are upset it doesn't follow the original lore, but then again, Westerners only had access to the original 2004 version for nearly a decade before the Realta Nua version finally had an actual patch, so they were used to that version of the lore, despite Realta Nua being released several times since 2007.
Anyway, I look forward to your critique on the series.
BradleyMcCloud If it ends up being only 1 movie, its doomed, there's no way around it. Also while I can understand that they're used to the 2004 version, I think it's important to understand and accept that it's not the only version that exists.
I know people are looking forward to the video, but I think it will be a little while before releasing it. I want to re-read the UBW route so I can compare the two more accurately.

BTW, Shirou isnt the only survivor from the Fuyuki Fire.He is the only one Kiritsugu found.There were other survivors that were taken in by Kirei or adopted from others.
The problem with Shirou is that as he was saying, that he saw many people die, people dying trying to save others and also(from fate route) him ignoring people asking for help because he thought it would be meaningless to help.

Extending fight scenes. Likely not. There are some other important scenes that need some expanding. Like fate Zero episode 11. The conversation with Gilgamesh wasn't in the original TV version. I feel it's gonna be something like that to give the characters more depth.

It's been a while since I played the VN but I just got a copy of the Realta Nua PC version so I'm using the new patch that merges the 2004 PC version, Realta Nua PC, and PS Vita versions into one. Got to refresh my memories. xD

If you think about it, Archer will win, but at long range, Rider would be? Just like that question, their compatibility is not very good. Since both aren't fixated on the methods of winning, they'd definitely both choose a low-risk and high-return type of warfare. Even if Archer takes out a Saber-class holy sword, he doesn't have enough Prana to draw on to maximize it, so it'd be hard to for him to attack Bellerophon. What determines victory or defeat is whether Aias on its own would be enough to block Bellerophon perhaps...?

JayKay 26 spoilers galore there bro!!. with this being said power isnt everything. if i'm not mistaken nasu has said that UBW wouldnt be too big of an issue for a number of servants. remember lance has that anti-projectile ability the 5th war servants are pretty evened out with berserker sitting at the top and assassin sitting at the bottom. between archer vs lancer vs rider i'd have to go with lancer beats archer rider beats lancer archer beat rider. and that is just looking at them in a real fight there is not telling.
I didn't knew Fate/Hollow Ataraxia's sex scenes were written by someone other than Nasu.It's great to hear that he is keeping away from the ero parts when writing stories.

Dead Frontier With the Tsukihime remake, I am not sure how they will get around not having sexual content without rewriting a lot of key moments since it was pretty integral to the narrative. I hope they just take the same tact as Fate/ Hollow Ataraxia and just get someone else to write them since Nasu is pretty much done with that sort of thing, otherwise I am not sure how I would feel with them being completely written out. The sexual content in Tsukihime was handled much better than F/SN in that regard as it mattered more to the story but I guess in a way it's worse since it's much harder to remove.

As far as music is concerned I do believe Fukasawa's music complements F/SN more than yuki kajiura...she actually would be more effective in Heaven's Feel,keeping in mind ,the general dark and brooding(somewhat creepy:P)atmoshphere..I get it where you are coming from but this show is turning out to be mind-bogglingly subtle..even when the music is corncerned...gives you the feeling of getting dick-teased..:p

chat77 I agree I don't think Kaijura's compositions would have been a good fit for UBW, she would be more suited to HF considering that takes a more psychological horror approach until the very end where it goes balls to the wall action. I don't think Fukusawa's music is bad at all, just that it could have been better. I want something on the caliber of Mighty Wind for the fight scenes. I do think Archer's theme is absolutely perfect though, it gets across his character in the best way possible.

The ANSWER was the defining moment of ubw for me...yeah,after that we do get a certain goldie getting trolled at the end......but that particular confrontation really gave me the feels and made UBW my favourite route :D..without the monologues that particular scene would degrade to some generic shounen anime scene where two people are beating the crap out of each other just for plot device..the internal monologues makes that scene so heartwrenchingly beautiful..:D

chat77 At first I was kinda soft on the movie since it was the only way to see the epic fights in UBW animated. However ufotable has done a better job in replicating the sensation of weight of the fights from the VN *much* better than Deen ever did and I now think the movie is an absolute complete waste of time.

BuGa654 Soundtracks aren't taken into account when calculating run times for shows and movies, even if it's bundled with it. The run time refers *specifically* the content on the DVD/Blu-Ray..

I don't really have a problem with the OST so far except for two instances. First one would be the dubstep part during the Berserker fight. I don't have a problem with dubstep but I just found it unfitting. Second would be the lack of Church on the Hill, which I found pretty disappointing.

thej4ck I agree on the lack of Church on the Hill, to me it is the definitive Kotomine theme. Glad you enjoyed the video man! As much as I do love F/Z and the VN, I don't think there's a lot wrong with this show.I think it's great for what it is and for newcomers who aren't familiar with Fate.
TheAnimeRoom I am thinking they are saving Church on the Hill for Lancer's bro moment scene. Kotomine is not that important of the character int his route so it is understandable why his scenes(even his Rejoice, Emiya Shirou) were so toned down.
Harry Dresden Kotomine doesn't truly shine until heaven's Feel where he has his crowning moments of awesome.

As a side note, words cannot express how grateful I am about how you ripped into every Zero fanboys complaint, I love FSN, Shirou, Rin, Saber, Archer, everyone! (Except Shinji). I really hate when people dismiss FSN as trash because "lol kids, Shirou is trash, this show is generic." I breaks my heart when people like them trash this series when beneath it all lies beauty. FSN might not be perfect, but it's one of the best damn stories I've ever read. One guy has been going on every Fate video, and worshipping Fate Zero, but trashing FSN, he's everywhere I go!

I was going to do it initially but the anime in the second half deviated from the visual novel more than I expected it would and overall it left a sour taste in my mouth. As its own show it's probably still fine but as an adaptation and as someone who holds the source material close to their heart, it was difficult for me to accept.

I think that older characters would have more fleshed out pasts and a greater level of experience, so that they're more likely to know what they're talking about. They're less likely to act emo too. Its not a huge complaint or anything, though.
Plenty of brutal bashing of the haters here, lol. It can be annoying when people compare stuff. But it is a fact of life. It was obviously going to be compared to Fate/Zero. Anything remotely similar gets compared. Even Berserk and Game of Thrones.
gilgamesh310 Haha, yeah it was actually no offense intended of course. =). I do see what you mean but the writer took Shirou's inexperience into account and builds on that so I think it works. It gets delved into and deconstructed later though. As for the haters, it was something that was brewing for awhile and I wanted to let it out. Looking back on the audio I think I should have edited out my overuse of cursing, but oh well.
TheAnimeRoom Nah, your frustration is pretty much how most of the VN readers are feeling when they hear this type of 'criticism'. It got really annoying seeing it on every F/SN and even F/Z video that's for sure.
The 90 minutes of missing footage really makes me nervous. That footage will *drastically* alter the show. Either it could flesh out more on-screen character, which would be a great thing and improve the show immensely, or it'll be mostly extra, unnecessary fat that was rightly trimmed, and turn the show into a horrible waste of time. Man, I hope it's the former. All 90 minutes of it. I hope every second of it is justified and improves the show's quality.

Harry Dresden To be perfectly honest, I think it may have been a bushiness decision to appeal to the Japanese market. Don't take this the wrong way, I don't feel that *all* Japanese fans are like this, however ufotable probably realized that if they emphasized some of the slice of life elements that it would push for more viewership and sales. To be fair it seems to be working as the show is doing well over there.
Fate stay night, visual novels included, felt more thought provoking then fate zero (i love both though) for me.... JUST saying. don't smite me people X_X
Sumika I agree, Fate/Zero is awesome, but the visual novel was a very rich experience.
I dunno something about visual novels just give an experience like no other. Fate stay night utilized this to the maximum, also. By having three routes that progressed as if KInoko was trying to say fate part 1, UBW was part 2, and heaven's feel was part 3. Fate is the route in which Shirou's ideals are beginning to sprout, Unlimited blade works he kind of sprouts and becomes a tree, and in heavens feel they wither and return to the soil, finishing what had been started, where the seed been planted by Kiritsugu. I feel the anime is kinda of reflecting unlimited blade works very well.

Anime fangasm Episode 2 is the episode that explains what the Holy Grail War really is. Episode 3 is a huge battle. The episodes (mostly) go in a flow of a an episode with build up, character development, explanations etc. and the episode after is an action packed one with lots of stuff happening. I tried to be as vague as possible, hopefully that answers your question.

Tbh, all the sex scenes feel very out of place in the visual novel.
I have no problem that they are left out.
The writer of the visual novel agrees with you, that's why they were completely removed in every version after the original.
To be honest the sex scenes in fate/stay night bore me so i never cared i even skipped some while playing the VN =P so i don't really care about it but the adaptation is pretty good so far it has some flaws but it's still good i am waiting for the second part of the show so i can enjoy the it even more since we wait for manyyy i also made a mistake and went in the VN non stop after every route and now i got bored of HF in the 10th day so i am taking a break but i will get back to it some day =p anyway great video allthought i like fate/zero more(after reading the LN i reallt think it's better than fate and UBW VN but i still like f/sn a lot) i agree with almost everything you are adressing
***** You really need to get back to HF, it's probably my favorite route of the 3, definitely the darkest and most disturbing. I think Fate/Stay Night as a whole is better than Fate/Zero since all 3 routes compliment each other very well and creates a very satisfying experience. Fate/Zero is still kick ass but I felt the VN was a more thought provoking experience overall.

10th day of Heavens Feel? The climax is slowly coming closer, I highly recommend reading it. It's the best route imo and I'm saying that as a saber fan.
