      If they hadn't lost a ton of their engineers on the N1 rocket, the Russians would've kept the race going for a long while. When they were unable to continue is when we stopped trying and started slowly shelving the space program. The conversion of NASA into a jobs program was the final nail.

    If Starship succeeds within a year, maybe two, Elon will have taken over 99.9% of all of the orbital launch capacity. All the other launch systems except a select few will be made redundant. It will take decades until everyone has caught up.
    Starship will fundamentally change the way we think about space economy. Asteroid mining, space stations much bigger than ISS, bases on multiple planets and moons, entire companies that only manufacture in space. It's nuts!

    • @guyfurman2463
      @guyfurman2463 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Yea, I don't think people are really comprehending how big of a change is coming. He's taking about a shift in launch capacity from hundreds of tons per year to millions of tons per year. That's 3 orders of magnitude. Cost to orbit will probably drop another order if magnitude down to $250/ kg also. This is happening fast and there's no way the rest of the industry catches up.
      The invention of the automobile didn't change the world. They were too expensive and built by master craftsman. It took the model T to change transportation and the world as we know it. Elon has just announced rocketry's model T. It has been designed to be mass produced. It costs less to build thanks to the stainless steel design. It costs less to fly thanks to the use of methane. So it's cheaper to operate, cheaper to build, and he's going to make lots of them. That's how you change the world, and it just got announced without 99 percent of people knowing or caring.

    A very good video Kevin. I am one of those that was in early elementary school when the Mercury 7 astronauts were selected. The 1960's brought great promise with the Apollo Program. The forward progress came to a crawl in the 1970's with a realigning of our goals to much lesser accomplishments with the Space Shuttle and then the ISS. Elon Mush in particular and some others have brought back that enthusiasm that existed 50 years ago. I think that this may be as exciting times technologically as the first half of the 20th Century was with aviation and electronics (though shadowed by WW I and WW II). Please keep up the good work of reporting on this.

      if there is a single foundry in existence that can output something of the length and diameter of the Starship and even if they could it would not be transportable to a site where it could be completed and launched. It is faintly possible that rolls of greater width could be had, but such specialty items cost a lot. The only solution to a minimum weight build with maximum strength is to use friction - stir welding. It is commercially available for stainless steel, so the only issue would be setting up jigs for the purpose. Such welds require no cleaning and essentially have the properties of a single piece of the original metal, with no impurities normally inserted by the welding process. It is the process now used for the F9 tanks and I don't understand why they haven't gone to it for this new rocket. I would not ever want to trust a tank of this size to hold up under pressure and flight stresses, repeatedly. This solution has to be staring Elon and the designers and engineers in the face.

    Hey Kevin what about the Starship's legs?
    I watched the whole presentation and this question was not clear.
    What do you think? Particularly I don't see landing stability on the current model.
    Can you comment a little about it?

    An intoxicating video .. I grew up hearing the beeps of the Russian satellite Sputnik 1 as it passed over the UK in 1957. We listened to it on the radio on the medium wave band.
    I grew up as a child during the "space Race". The first animal and person in space .. then the moon landings, the Voyager spacecraft etc etc etc.. the best rock music the planet has ever known .. and now at 67 years old I'm about to witness the next chapter.
    I will probably not see the end result of Elon's dreams but I wish him and everyone involved in the dream .. all the best .. because we are on the "Threshold of a Dream"

      @user-lv7ph7hs7l 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      All rocket companies do it. It's just too big a part of the pie. And also the military is happy to pay a little extra in advance. See it this way, money that could have gone to bombs and weapons is instead going into a rocket launch funding that companies plans for the future. Yes in a perfect world they wouldn't rely on the military but it's not a perfect world. Even Blue Origin who first said they'd not launch military payloads are now heavily competing in the Air Force contracts. You'd be stupid not too, considering the amount of money you can make. And the military likes to buy in bulk, they'll not just buy one or two launches but 20 and they'll even pay for rocket development and so on.

    • @Orlunu
      @Orlunu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I too wish for a return to dumb bombs requiring the levelling of whole villages to hit a specific target, hideously inaccurate intelligence leading to tragic misunderstandings, and the like. Vastly more people will suffer far worse violations because of it, but at least the companies I like will be able to tut at it and say that they are not involved and are therefore more morally pure.

    Over the past 7 years SpaceX has been designing rocket parts so that one day humans may colonize mars, that day is quickly approaching. Like those who lived through the space race of the 1960's the current generations are now experiencing a new period of innovation and enthusiasm for space exploration. But this time we aim to go further than those who went before us, through dedication and teamwork big dreams are becoming big realities and with each new achievement more eyes that once looked to the stars for solace turn their gaze to Starship.

      I'm pretty sure that if Amazon delivers at Mars, they will have a totally different catalog for Mars separate from the Earth one. The overlap between the set of items available at each planet probably wouldn't be large enough to justify using a single catalog. Especially considering that Martian market preferences would probably be quite different than Earth's, due to the inevitably very different culture and economy.
