Using All The Y-Axis Travel My Milling Machine Has

  • I had to cut a large chamfer on a number of pieces. Unfortunately I don't have the second head on my vertical head attachment to allow me to cut angles along the X-axis of the milling machine. Therefore I had to cut it along the Y-Axis. Using the entire Y-axis travel gave me about 1/8" of overtravel on each end of the part. It was tight but it worked out well.

    Max recommended your channel, so I just signed on and have a lot of binging to do. Played a lot of golf in B.C. years ago. Time to revisit, cheers !

      Thanks Max. This mill was a good purchase and has let me do work that I couldn't otherwise do. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your heavy machines up and running. It will be nice to pick up some hints and tricks from someone with a lot more experience on them than I have. Ken

      Thanks. I had just put a brand new (actually about 40 years old but never used) endmill on so it was cutting nicely. The mill is quite rigid and having only ever used a Bridgeport before this I am always amazed at the size of cuts this mill will take without complaining. Ken

      Thanks DP. As I mentioned in a comment above it is a combination of a rigid machine and a brand new (i.e. sharp) endmill. Ken

      Thanks stovepipe. I am in the middle of getting a HBM up and running and I often watch your channel for videos about you using your HBM. Seeing what you can do with yours makes me want to get mine up and running even more. Ken

    Was wondering the coolant control…nice cut/finish

    • @hmw-ms3tx
      @hmw-ms3tx  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The coolant is Castrol Syntillo 9954. It is just pumped on the cutter and in this case some of it ended up on the floor. Ken

    Hogging it down!

    • @hmw-ms3tx
      @hmw-ms3tx  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes this mill is good at hogging. It weighs 6500 lbs and has a 10 hp motor. I can't imagine what a Cincinnati No. 5 (18,000 lbs, 30 to 50 hp) could do. You wouldn't want to find yourself on the wrong side of the cutter with one of those with the torrent of blue swarf flying off the cutter. Ken

      @@hmw-ms3tx Yeah that number 5 is a beast.
