    Here Nov 2024 and found this amazing, only real DIY loft bed vid I could find so far. Thank you for sharing. This is my next project. As a foster parent we have to be frugal and make due with the space we have and this is exactly what we need.

      Built one, doesnt go over the rails or bed frame plus the ladder is lacking detail on how to build. You’ll have to spend way more than $200, lumber is sitting just over $600 too unless you are able to find bargains wood that meets the length criteria.

    Thanks for the walkthrough! For anyone coming here after me, and interested in making this build, I compiled the cut list here:
    75"x54" OSB / plywood (1)
    1x3 73.5" (2) (platform side - long)
    1x3 73.5" (4) (railings - long) (estimated)
    1x3 54" (2) (platform side - short)
    1x3 54" (2) (railing - short) (estimated)
    1x3 52.5" (2) (platform supports)
    1x3 51" (4) (desk base - both sides)
    1x3 49.5" (4) (desk long sides - both sides)
    1x3 45.75" (2) (desk side support)
    1x3 20" (4) (desk short sides)
    1x3 18.5" (4) (desk supports)
    1x3 10.75" (2) (desk shelf short sides)
    1x3 9.25" (2) (desk shelf supports)
    1x4 72" (8) (legs)
    1x4 66.5" (2) (ladder rails)
    1x4 13.5" (1) (ladder "top")
    1x8 76.5" (2) (bedframe side - long)
    1x8 54" (2) (bedframe side - short)
    1x8 52.5" (1) (top of bookshelf)
    1x8 51" (5) (shelves)
    1x8 48" (2) (sides)
    1x8 44.5" (2) (sides)
    2x4 57" (4) (jack studs)
    2x4 13.5" (5) (ladder rungs)
    As per a previous comment, though, I'm actually swapping out the OSB, making some minor modifications to the platform portion, and buying some pre-strung bed slats. I'm also adding a small 3-drawer cabinet underneath the desk. At least that's my plan, wish me luck!

    I've looking for a good video on how to build a loft for a long time because all the loft beds I keep finding are either made out of metal (which I rather have wood because I think it would be easy to take care of and take down if I need to) or they were outlandishly expensive. I'm really going to consider this in the future when my family moves

    Incase you decide to try this, Taco Joe did his mathing wrong.
    The center desk cut lengths @5:02 should have side lengths of 44.25” not 45.75”.
    45.75” should be the overall length with sides added.
    Unless you want a screwy situation with the desk i advise to adjust accordingly.

      You are thinking about it the right way - ie - how to fit 2 lofts in one room vs. trying to make them fit - LOL / You'll have unlimited options w/layout so don't hesitate to think outside the box. Definitely google "2 lofts in 1 room" and see what that search returns / I'm sure you'll see a number of different options and you can use the same concepts in my video and adapt them to different layouts. Any chance you have a cut sheet & hardware list? Curious on how many screw lengths you used, and did I see something like 8 carriage bolts? I'm assuming 1/4-20, but hollar back if thats wrong.

    • @TacoJoesHouse
      @TacoJoesHouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I used zinc #6 drywall screws and eyeballed the joints where they were used. Typical lengths I used....
      2x4 to 2x4: 3"
      2X4 to 1XX: 1 5/8", almost always driving from the 1X side
      1X to 1X: almost always 1 5/8" - but - if there was any risk of poke though, 1 1/4"
      Carriage bolts: 5/16" - 1/4" should be find but the head size is almost the same between the two so I went larger.
      CLAMP EVERYTHING AND USE WOODGLUE TOO!!!!!!!!! I also drilled pilot holes if there were knots nearby/etc (better safe then sorry) / Thanks for the comment!

    • @TacoJoesHouse
      @TacoJoesHouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The mattress bedframe is the weak point (thus the shear load of the 1x3s and OSB) as the jack studs at the 4 corners are good for more people than the bed can hold. I'll see if I can put together a calculation to share

    Can you please tell me the measurements I’d need for a twin sized bed. I’m a total noob at this and don’t want to try guessing.

    This is a great video but I would be even better if you provided detailed plans. I would also warn anyone outside the US to do a rough costing on the cost of all the wood used as it appears US prices are substantially cheaper than elsewhere (though that could be as a result of pandemic/supply chain issues).

      Hi Darrell / all the cut lengths - lumber sizes appear between major build scenes in the video so I think all the information is there to build the loft - I could be missing something though / are you interesting in blueprints/cad drawings/etc? Appreciate the comment- thank you!

      @@TacoJoesHouse Yes, I would be interested in full plans and I think a lot of other people would be too. You don't show screw and bolt placement well and complete novices like me need more hand holding.

    TacoJoe! Can you send a link or info about your shelving/desktop material in this build? Where did you get it? Is it melamine, or solid wood? I haven't seen a desktop material for sale like that. Is it plywood that you stained, or something else?

  • @Joeverland
    @Joeverland 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm curious if that desktop you got is solid wood or laminate. Thx.

      Hi Joe (and Taco Joe) - same question here. I didn’t recognize that material and am curious where you got it and how you finished it.
      I built a desk a few years back and used 5-6 coats of water based poly with sanding between coats. It still came out like an orange peel and felt really weird. Suggestions on desk top material appreciated

    would you be able to build this without the desk underneath? or is the desk needed to make the frame sturdy?

    • @TacoJoesHouse
      @TacoJoesHouse  ปีที่แล้ว

      yes you definitely can, but you may want to explore ways to re-enforce the legs in place of the desk (maybe another shelf?). Thanks for the comment

      @tacojoeshouse, the 1x2s don’t appear in the video from what I can tell. What Are the 1x2s used for?

    This is quite impressive! Question: When you disassembled and spackled the screw holes, did you just choose different spots to screw into when reassembling?

    what do you think the likely hood of a young adult being able to use this is... I'm considering going with a lofted bed with desk underneath for myself and am unsure of whether they would hold my weight or not.. less than 250 LB for reference.

    • @TacoJoesHouse
      @TacoJoesHouse  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem w/250lbs - the key is making sure everything is plumb when you put it together and that you use carriage bolts / wood glue on the jack studs. The weak point is the bedframe (where I use the 1X3s-OSB). If you are worried and want to beef that up, swap out the OSB with plywood and you can even up the 1x3s to 1x4s - but- remember the mattress might sit up higher as a result and you should consider 1x10 / 1x12 sides on the bed frame instead. Thanks for the comment!
