First of all thank you so much ma'am for such an amazing lecture, below I have mentioned the points:- Theory of international politics - by Kenneth waltz: Waltz's most influential work, Theory of International Politics (1979), a systematic account of the international balance of power, remained a canonical text in political science well into the 21st century. Neorealism represented an effort to inject greater precision, or conceptual rigour, into realist theory. While retaining power as a central explanatory notion, Waltz's neorealism also incorporated the idea of structure as it is reflected in alliances and other cooperative... The two main features of Waltz's theory are the- anarchic state of international relations the distribution of power among states. The two main features of Waltz's theory are the- anarchic state of international relations the distribution of power among states. The condition of anarchy refers to the absence of a higher authority to adjudicate international disputes. According to Waltz, the key factor in international relations is the polarity of the system-that is, whether it is dominated by one, two, or many superpowers (unipolarity, bipolarity, and multipolarity, respectively).
Thank you mam for this amazing lecture Kennith Waltz -: [ ] He was an American- Political Scientist [ ] Works - Theory of International Politics in 1979 - Called as the resurgence of realism in the field of international relations. [ ] Associated with neo- realist, structural realist in international relations theory . [ ] First important text - Man, the state and war . [ ] A theoretical analysis- 1959 The State and war focused on why do wars occur and how can we prevent wars .It perceived 3 broad categories-: 1. Nature of human beings 2. Internal structure of states 3. The anarchic structure of international relations • Both realism and neo-realism look at the conflictual side. • Two main features of Waltz theory are -: 1. Anarchic state of international relations 2. Focus on distribution of power among states and the focus on relative capacity power . • Waltz adopts a theory which aims to explain laws . • Reductionist theories explain the behavior of parts they seek to explain international outcomes solely through the behavior of units leaving aside the effect their environment may have . • Why is Waltz critical of them ? - because they fail to account for similar behavior across states [ ] Important findings of the book -: 1. State pursue their security above other goals. 2. Balancing of power by states. • Ordering principle - Anarchy • Different units exist in a self help system • No functional differentiation among them. [ ] Types of balancing-: • Internal - Increasing economic and military strength • External - Creating alliances , more uncertain • Multipolar - occurs externally among states • Bipolar - occurs internally , produce less conflict [ ] The similarities between classical realism, political realism, neo realism, and structural realism is that the focus is on the conflictual side of international reality and both consider state as a rational actor . They focus on absolute gains and give lot of emphasis to power in defined in terms of domination and this was perceived in terms of military power . [ ] The nature of understanding was different because neo realism tries to refine realism. [ ] The most important international relations theorist of the past half century is " Mearsheimer " 2009 = Reckless state and realism.
Great lecture mam Theory of IR by kenneth waltz Waltz started his work with basic assumptions which predict certain behaviours for states. These assumptions are: ●The international system is anarchic;there is no higher central authority that can enforce rules over individual states. ●Given this context, states act on the basis of self-help:They operate with the aim of survival and their interactions with other states reflect their desire to survive. ●The structure only changes if great powers take actions that will lead to a change. Most states have no power to change the structure. States will try to balance against each other because they will try to increase their chance of survival. Waltz' theory is mainly a critique of "reductionist" theories which look at the behavior of the units in the system to explain outcomes. Waltz claims that this approach ignores the constraints imposed on states behavior by the international environment. In his consideration of international institutions, waltz emphasizes that these are not the main actors in the international system but states are still the principal decision makers. Waltz theory has been one of the most influential IR theories in the 20th century. Its parsimony and rigor has been praised by scholars and it has largely been used to explain war and peace.
Kenneth Neal Waltz (June 8, 1924 - May 12, 2013) was an American political scientist and one of the most prominent scholars in the field of international relations. He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War.Waltz was one of the original founders of neorealism, or structural realism, in international relations theory and later became associated with the school of defensive neorealism. Waltz's theories have been extensively debated within the field of international relations. His 1979 book Theory of International Politics is the most assigned book in International Relations graduate training at U.S. universities. Theory of International Politics is a 1979 book on international relations theory by Kenneth Waltz that offers a realist structural theory, neorealism, to explain international relations. Taking into account the influence of neoclassical economic theory, Waltz argued that the fundamental "ordering principle" of the international political system is anarchy, which is defined by the presence of "functionally undifferentiated" individual state actors lacking "relations of super- and subordination" that are distinguished only by their varying capabilities. Waltz challenges reductionist approaches to international politics, arguing that they fail to account for similar behaviors across states. According to Waltz, system-level processes of socialization and competition lead states to behave in similar ways. He argues that state pursue their security above other goals, which limits the potential for cooperation and creates security competition. Waltz also argues that bipolarity is more stable than multipolarity. One of the major findings of the book is that states tend to balance against power, which leads to the persistent formation of balances of power. It is arguably the most influential book in international relations, causing a fundamental discursive transformation and bringing the concept of anarchy to the forefront. The book caused a resurgence of realism in the field of international relations. Thanks a lot ma'am!!
Thank you mam for the amazing and informative lecture. Kenneth Waltz's work play crucial role in International Relation. IR is a domain which is viewed as anarchy because there's no world government. We can see the system as a whole, a small part of it, or parts interacting with each other. 1. The Individual Level: Action of an individual responding to any crisis according to their own position or responsibility. 2. Group Level: Actions or views of group of individuals analysis is at group level. 3. State Level: We look at the states as actors in their own right and then accordingly look at their actions and decisions. 4. System Level: We look at the global level and analyse it. Kenneth Waltz says that we get 3 images while studying IR:- 1. Human Behaviour (reductionist)- that human is greedy and selfish. 2. International structure of the state- hierarchy system. 3. The international system (systematic)- there's anarchy as there's no one supreme.
Thanku so much mam for such an amazing lecture. Kenneth N. Waltz’s work- Theory of International Politics(1979) caused a resurgence of realism in the field of international relations. In his other work- Man, The State and War(1959) the focus was on why do wars occur and how can we prevent war. It aimed at 3 broad categories- ✅ nature of human beings ✅ internal structure of states ✅ anarchic structure of international relations Theory of International Politics stated that in order to understand international relations we must focus on structure of International system. Both realism and neorealism look at conflictual side and focus is on competitive interplay of self interested actors. The two main features of this work are- 🟠anarchic state of International relations 🟠 distribution of power among states and focus on relative capacity It describes how relations between variables are established by laws. Theories are taken to be collection of related laws, meaning theories are composed of interconnected hypothesis. “Reductionist” theories explain “the behaviour of parts.”- they seek to explain international outcomes solely through the behaviour of units, leaving aside effects their environment may have. Waltz was critical of them for they failed to account for similar behaviour across states. Important findings of the book are- 🟠 states pursue their security above other goals 🟠 balancing of power by states Balance may be of two types- 1- internal balancing- increasing economic and military strength 2- external balancing-creating alliances Ordering principle = anarchy *different units exist in a self help system* *no functional differentiation among them* States seek their own preservation and maximum universal domination. “Anarchy entails relation of coordination among a system’s units and that implies their sameness….So long as anarchy endures, states remain like units.
Theory of International Politics by Kenneth Waltz Waltz starts his work with some basic assumptions which predict certain behaviors for states. These assumptions are: 1.The international system is anarchic: there is no higher central authority that can enforce rules over individual states. 2.Given this context, states act on the basis of self-help: They operate with the aim of survival and their interactions with other states reflect their desire to survive. 3.The structure only changes if great powers take actions that will lead to a change. Most states have no power to change the structure. Given this context, states will try to balance against each other because they will try to increase their chance of survival. Balancing can take two forms: Internal and external. Internal balancing refers to the investment of military power to match up with other states. External balancing refers to the alliance of states to counter a stronger power, or a hegemon. States will choose the weaker of the available coalitions because of the understanding that the stronger side is the one threatening their security. Waltz’ theory is mainly a critique of “reductionist” theories which look at the behavior of the units in the system (i.e. states) to explain outcomes. According to Waltz , international politics is best understood by examining the structure of the international system as reflected in alliances and other cooperative arrangements between states. The two main features of Waltz’s theory are the anarchic state of international relations and the distribution of power among states. The condition of anarchy refers to the absence of a higher authority to adjudicate international disputes. There is no world government. World politics is characterised by an unequal distribution of power and by the capacity of the most powerful states to impose a world order concordant with their interests. The key factor in IR is the polarity of the system i.e, whether it is dominated by one, two or many superpowers. He considered unipolar system after fall of Soviet Union as most unstable and dangerous configuration. Thank you ma’am for such informative video

Kenneth Waltz was an American political scientist and best known as the originator of neo-realism theory of international relations. His first theoretical analysis as Man ,the state and war 1959 was a work of political theory examining the views of the great thinkers of western political thought on the cause of war and peace. Theory of International Politics ,1979 is Waltz's most influential work which has a systematic account of international balance of power. According to him international politics is best understood by examining the structure of international system .His neorealist approach is a part of political theory realist tradition in which it understand politics as the competitive ,interplay of self interested actors . The two main features of his theory are- 1. The anarchic state of international relations. 2.the distribution of power among states. The anarchy refers to the condition where there is an absence of higher authority to adjudicate international disputes .Second world politics is characterized by an unequal distribution of power and by the capacity of the most powerful states to impose a world order concordant with their interest . According to Waltz the key factor of the international relations is the polarity of the system.
Kenneth Waltz was an American political scientist, his name was associated with the neo - realist and structural realist perspectives in IR theory. He presented us with 2 important works namely, Man, state and war- a theoretical analysis 1959, and Theory of International politics. The focus argument of the book, Man, state and war i.e why wars happen, how can we prevent wars. This book presents an examination of ideas of prominent thinkers in history under 3 broad categories :- 1) Nature of human beings 2) Internal structure of states 3) the anarchic structure of IR. It is the Anarchic structure of IR which is the key determiner but at the same time we also have to see that we are incapable of explaining war W/o reference to the other 2.
Thankyou maam for such an informative and wonderful lectures...it clears everything so beautifully. Thankyou so much for explaining . Kenneth waltz was an American political scientist, his name is associated with the neo realist, structural realist perspective in international relations theory. Waltz adoptable a theory which aims to explain laws. Reductionist theories explain "the behavior of parts" they seek to explain international outcomes solely through the behavior of units leaving aside the affect their environment mat have. Why waltz is critical to them: fail to account for similar behavior across states. Some of the findings important books are: ● state persue their security above other Goals. ●balancing of power by state. Theory of politics point out there are 2 types of balance: 1. Thank you so much ma'am for such an informative and interesting video. This helps us to have a clear idea and knowledge about Kenneth N. Waltz's Theory of International Politics. Thank you for explaining the topics so well. The analysis and knowledge gathered by me from the video is that Kenneth Waltz was an American political scientist and his name is associated with the neo realist, structural realist perspective in international relations theory. Along with that Kenneth waltz important text "the man, state and war" Presents a theoretical analysis in 1959. His next work after this was "Theory of international politics 1979". •It is to note that Waltz started his work on the basis of a few assumptions: 1. the international system of anarchic, there is no higher central authority. Hence, the anarchist state of international relations. 2. State act on the basis of self help, they operate with the aim of survival and their intersection with others. In other words, the distribution of power among states and the focus on relative capacity power. •This Theory discusses about two types of balance: I. Internal balance: Increasing economic and military strength. 2. External balance example is creating alliances. The most important international theoriest of the past half century is Mearsheimar 2009 _Reckless state and rationalism •Multipolar balancing occurs externally (among state) •Bipolar balancing occurs internally. The structure only change if great power take actions that will lead to a change Theory of international politics 1979.

Waltz’ theory is mainly a critique of “reductionist” theories which look at the behavior of the units in the system (i.e. states) to explain outcomes. Waltz claims that this approach ignores the constraints imposed on state behavior by the international environment. Thank you mam for such a good explanation This video gave us a beautiful explanation about keneth N. Waltz book on Theory of International politics. It gave explanation about structural realism and neo realism. This gave us the analysis with reference to their approach in reference to anarchy. Milner Helen V describe it as " Book caused a resurgence of realism in the field of IR" KENETY N. WALTZ was an American scholar who gave 2 important work 1. Man, the state and war (1959) 2. Theory of international politics (1979) First gave the analysis over the reasons of war and measure to prevent war It gave 3 analysis- nature of human, internal structure of state and anarchy structure of international. This also gave various content of book. After explanation of what waltz told in his book this gave us a quick insight into what other thinker think about the book and it's content. It also gave us view of balance of power Its main point also focuses on economic and anarchy and state preference for security and self help Thankyou so much mam.

Hans Morgenthau is considered one of the founding fathers of realistic perspectives in international relations. He made great contributions to the school of thought, especially in the post-world War ll Era. In 1948 he wrote a book "politics among nations", the struggle for politics and peace. A chapter, “A Realist Theory of International Relations” in his book, “Politics among Nations: The Struggle for Power and Peace” presents the six fundamental principles of political realism. He identifies a different class of realism. He called it ‘Political Realism’. ■ These are: ● Politics is governed by objective laws based on Human nature. ● National Interest is defined in terms of national power. ● There is no fixed or unchanging meaning of Interest. It is always dynamic. ● Inapplicability of Abstract Moral Principles to politics. ● Difference between Moral Aspiration of a nation and Universal Moral Laws. ● Autonomy of International Politics.

Kenneth Waltz was an American political scientist. The focus argument of this book is that why do wars happen and how can we prevent war? This presents an examination of the idea of prominent thinkers and history under 3 broad categories : * Nature of human beings * Internal structure of the state * The anarchic structure of international relations Main features of waltz theory: 1. Anarchic state of international relations 2. Distribution of power amongst States and the focus on relative capacity power This book makes an assumption that is for this theory to operate we must see two or more state in a self help system with no superior authority over them. This work describes how the relations between variables are established by laws. Waltz suggests that this approach can result in an infinite amount of relevant knowledge for each theory as well as an infinite number of combinations for this information.

Very well explained and thorough lecture. Kenneth Waltz theory of International Politics Waltz was an American political scientist. He is associated with neo realist perspective in IR. In 'Man, the State and War' he classifies the diverse positions on the causes of war in three broad groups or ‘three images’. The first image representing approaches based on human nature, the second those based on the state level and the third those arguing about the qualities of the anarchic state system. The work also contains insights on why do wars happen and how to prevent them. Waltz’ theory is mainly a critique of “reductionist” theories which look at the behavior of the units in the system (i.e. states) to explain outcomes. Waltz claims that this approach ignores the constraints imposed on state behavior by the international environment. Moreover, there are patterns of international behavior which cannot be explained by differences at the state level. Looking at the structural level variables parsimoniously explain why “dissimilar units behave in similar ways”. The structure socializes individual states to act similarly because it constrains the menu of actions that the states can use to respond to international phenomena. In his consideration of international institutions, Waltz emphasizes that these are not the main actors in the international system but states are still the principal decision makers. As long as this will be the case, international institutions will not have any significant effect on international outcomes.

Theory of IR by kenneth waltz
Waltz started his work with basic assumptions which predict certain behaviours for states. These assumptions are:
●The international system is anarchic;there is no higher central authority that can enforce rules over individual states.
Kenneth Waltz says that we get 3 images while studying IR:-
It aimed at 3 broad categories-
✅ nature of human beings
✅ internal structure of states
✅ anarchic structure of international relations
Theory of International Politics stated that in order to understand international relations we must focus on structure of International system. Both realism and neorealism look at conflictual side and focus is on competitive interplay of self interested actors. The two main features of this work are-
🟠anarchic state of International relations
🟠 distribution of power among states and focus on relative capacity
It describes how relations between variables are established by laws.
Important findings of the book are-
🟠 states pursue their security above other goals
🟠 balancing of power by states
Balance may be of two types-
1- internal balancing- increasing economic and military strength
2- external balancing-creating alliances
Ordering principle = anarchy
*different units exist in a self help system*
*no functional differentiation among them*
States seek their own preservation and maximum universal domination.
“Anarchy entails relation of coordination among a system’s units and that implies their sameness….So long as anarchy endures, states remain like units.

This book presents an examination of ideas of prominent thinkers in history under 3 broad categories :-
1) Nature of human beings
2) Internal structure of states
3) the anarchic structure of IR.
It is the Anarchic structure of IR which is the key determiner but at the same time we also have to see that we are incapable of explaining war W/o reference to the other 2.

•It is to note that Waltz started his work on the basis of a few assumptions:
1. the international system of anarchic, there is no higher central authority. Hence, the anarchist state of international relations.
2. State act on the basis of self help, they operate with the aim of survival and their intersection with others. In other words, the distribution of power among states and the focus on relative capacity power.

Thank you mam for such a good explanation
This video gave us a beautiful explanation about keneth N. Waltz book on Theory of International politics.
It gave explanation about structural realism and neo realism.
This gave us the analysis with reference to their approach in reference to anarchy.
Milner Helen V describe it as " Book caused a resurgence of realism in the field of IR"
KENETY N. WALTZ was an American scholar who gave 2 important work
1. Man, the state and war (1959)
2. Theory of international politics (1979)
First gave the analysis over the reasons of war and measure to prevent war
It gave 3 analysis- nature of human, internal structure of state and anarchy structure of international.
This also gave various content of book.
After explanation of what waltz told in his book this gave us a quick insight into what other thinker think about the book and it's content.
It also gave us view of balance of power
Its main point also focuses on economic and anarchy and state preference for security and self help

Waltz clarifies the issue by distinguishing the distribution of power which is a structural level variable as opposed to power itself which is a state-level variable.
the literature on international institutions looks more and more at the effects of NGOs and IGOs, finding that they matter in policy making, contrary to Waltz and his theory.

■ These are:
● Politics is governed by objective laws based on Human nature.

*To understand international relations one must look at the structure of the international system, this is one of the key arguments presented in theory of international politics by kenneth waltz
*It tries to reform the realist theory
*Focus is on the competitive interplay of self interested actors.
#Main features of the waltz' theory that makes it different from the pre existing ones are :-
1. Anarchic state(lack of centralised authority) of international relations because their is no world government.
2. Focus on Distribution of power among states and focus on relative capacity power
*Waltz adopts a theory which explain laws.
*Redictionists theory explain the behavior of parts
Waltz critical to them because they fail to account for similar behavior across the states.
#important findings of the book :-
State persu e their security over other goals.
Balancing of power by states.
According to Kenneth waltz the key feature in international relations is that it tries to interpret international reality in a very scientific manner.

Kenneth Waltz was an American political scientist. The focus argument of this book is that why do wars happen and how can we prevent war?
This presents an examination of the idea of prominent thinkers and history under 3 broad categories :
* Nature of human beings
* Internal structure of the state
* The anarchic structure of international relations
Main features of waltz theory:
1. Anarchic state of international relations
2. Distribution of power amongst States and the focus on relative capacity power
This book makes an assumption that is for this theory to operate we must see two or more state in a self help system with no superior authority over them.
This work describes how the relations between variables are established by laws.
Waltz suggests that this approach can result in an infinite amount of relevant knowledge for each theory as well as an infinite number of combinations for this information.
Kenneth N. Waltz, in full Kenneth Neal Waltz, (born 1924, Ann Arbor, Michigan, U.S.-died May 12, 2013, New York, New York), American political scientist and educator best known as the originator of the neorealist (or structural realist) theory of international relations.
The two main features of Waltz’s theory are the anarchic state of international relations and the distribution of power among states. The condition of anarchy refers to the absence of a higher authority to adjudicate international disputes. Simply put, world politics is anarchic because there is no world government.
Second, world politics is characterized by an unequal distribution of power and by the capacity of the most powerful states to impose a world order concordant with their interests.
🔴Waltz starts his work with some basic assumptions which predict certain behaviors for states. These assumptions are:
The international system is anarchic: there is no higher central authority that can enforce rules over individual states.
🔴Given this context, states act on the basis of self-help: They operate with the aim of survival and their interactions with other states reflect their desire to survive.
🔴The structure only changes if great powers take actions that will lead to a change.
🔴Balancing can take two forms: Internal and external. Internal balancing refers to the investment of military power to match up with other states. External balancing refers to the alliance of states to counter a stronger power, or a hegemon.
🔴The structure of the system is mainly based on the distribution of power. In other words, the distribution of power is the main (and sometimes the only) determinant of international outcomes.
🔴Waltz’ theory is mainly a critique of “reductionist” theories which look at the behavior of the units in the system (i.e. states) to explain outcomes.
🔴Waltz emphasizes that these are not the main actors in the international system but states are still the principal decision makers.
🔴International systems are defined with respect to the number of great powers they accommodate at a certain point in time (i.e. bipolarity, multipolarity, hegemonic system…).
🔴Waltz’ theory has been one of the most influential IR theories in the 20th century.
🔴the literature on international institutions looks more and more at the effects of NGOs and IGOs, finding that they matter in policy making, contrary to Waltz and his theory.
Thank you so much for such a enlightening lecture ✨
Kenneth waltz :"Theory of international politics"
*Kenneth waltz important text and quote is "Man, The state , and War a theoretical analysis 1959"
*"Theory of international politics 1979" .
◾ Waltz starts his work with some basic assumptions which predict certain behaviour of states:-
• The international system of anarchic.there is no higher central authority.
• State act on the basis of self - help.they operate with the aim of survival and their interactions with other states reflects their deserve to survival.
• The structure only change if great power take actions that will lead to a change.state try to balanced against each other.
🔺 Waltz adopts a Theory which aim to explain laws.
"Reductionist" theories explain"the behaviour of parts" they seek to explain international outcomes solely through the behaviour of units, leaving aside the effect their environmental may have".
* Why waltz critical to them: fail to account for similar behaviours across States.
◾ Important finding of the book;
• state persue their security above other goals
• balancing of power by states.
🔶 Theory of politics point out that there are 2 types of balance;
1. Internal balance ( increasing economic and military strength)
2. External Balance ex; creating alliances.

Theory of international politics - by Kenneth waltz :
Waltz's most influential work, Theory of International Politics (1979), a systematic account of the international balance of power, remained a canonical text in political science well into the 21st century.
Neorealism represented an effort to inject greater precision, or conceptual rigour, into realist theory. While retaining power as a central explanatory notion, Waltz’s neorealism also incorporated the idea of structure as it is reflected in alliances and other cooperative…
The two main features of Waltz’s theory are the-
_anarchic state of international relations _the distribution of power among states. The condition of anarchy refers to the absence of a higher authority to adjudicate international disputes.According to Waltz, the key factor in international relations is the polarity of the system-that is, whether it is dominated by one, two, or many superpowers (unipolarity, bipolarity, and multipolarity, respectively).

Kenneth Waltz theory of international politics
According to Kenneth Waltz international politics is best understood by examining the structure of the international system .
Main features of Waltz theory that makes it different from the pre existing ones are :-
• Anarchic State of international relations
• Focus on distribution of power among states and focus on relative capacity power.
Kenneth Waltz adopts a theory that explains lawas :- describes how the relations between variables are established by laws.
This is so useful. Thank you very much🙏

1)The international system is anarchic: there is no higher central authority that can enforce rules over individual states.
2)Given this context, states act on the basis of self-help: They operate with the aim of survival and their interactions with other states reflect their desire to survive.
3)The structure only changes if great powers take actions that will lead to a change. Most states have no power to change the structure. Given this context, states will try to balance against each other because they will try to increase their chance of survival.
~Balancing can take two forms: Internal and external. Internal balancing refers to the investment of military power to match up with other states. External balancing refers to the alliance of states to counter a stronger power, or a hegemon. States will choose the weaker of the available coalitions because of the understanding that the stronger side is the one threatening their security.

Kenneth Waltz theory of International Politics
Waltz was an American political scientist.
Sorry mam today both of ur lectures is beyond my understanding
Very rich content on neorealism Thank you madam
