She was going to get bought out but the buyer backed out when her condition became appparent. Lakan didnt come back. She gave birth then and had to support herself as a now almost zero worth courtsan to get by. Thats how she got the syph. Then went mad. The finger thing is a cursing thing. If you rewatch, he mentions the "other little finger". Rewatch the eps, do you remember seeing mao mao look at or touch her own pinky?
Lakan’s guilt is waiting 1000 days without contacting her. I don’t blame him from missing her hint before he left, nor do I find him solely at fault. Fengxian and Lakan have a lot of trouble communicating so they miss so much. Maomao does not hate him, but his neglect of Fengxian for 1000 days cannot be entirely excused. Therefore he has much to atone. However, the brothel and Fengxian hiding Fengxian’s survival albeit diseased spreads the “blame.” Simple communications could behave either avoided trouble or at least create chances to restore closeness. Pride and shame ruined this.
Fengxian The people who Maomao cherishes, Loumen, old lady, Meimei, Juka, Pairin, perhaps her mother, Fengxian, need closure and this her way of perhaps not healing but closure so all of them can move forward. Lakan was self aware of his issues that his Uncle Loumen tried to help him. But in his arrogance he did not try to really understand those around him. His failure to connect either Fengxian or understand her communications with him. After THREE years he finally understood. He was not malicious just lazy and neglectful - abandoning Fengxian dooming her to her shameful state and disease. Maomao understands it was not all his fault so she does not hate him but also has no affection for him. His stupidity does not excuse him nor does she forgive him, but does not see him as malicious. He may even a grown more self aware ergo his clumsy attempts to connect with his daughter whose mother he abandoned for 3 critical years. Recall her comment she lost ability for love in Fengxian womb. Lakan’s obsession and joy in games he ignored and forgot about Fengxian even though she wrote so many letters. He was not evil but he has so much to atone for. 3 years 3 years 3 years 3 years and did nothing to maintain connection. Again in 1000 days he did not contact Fengxian.
From what I understand, I completely disagree. He was not neglectful. He was away from work for literally 3 years, and he did not have any idea about the baby until he arrived, when he just found the letters. Having the baby was her idea as well. She is the one that seduced him, so I don’t think that blame lies with Lakan. He couldn’t do anything.. so while I kind of get why Maomao wouldn’t be too fond of him, I also think it’s unfair to pin the blame on him and make him have to atone for it, since he was also a victim of unfortunate timing.

She gave it to him for free bc they loved each other. He just didn't figure out what she was planning though, to make herself more affordable for him to buy out. Then he disappeared for 3 years instead of 6 months.

I’m not denying that he is half responsible. but you can’t say he was entirely the one at fault for the end result, considering we’ve seen that neither of them expected him to be gone for 3 years and neither of them are good at communicating. I agree with the fact that he definitely should’ve tried to keep in touch and tried to get back together with her. However, Fengxian should’ve also told him outright said what she was planning instead of giving Lakan hints because she knew that he wouldn’t have understood otherwise, which we saw was true when he came back.
