Early spring queens fly around investigating every kind of holes that could be interesting. They often use old abandoned mouse nest, so some smell of mouse urine will get their intention.
It's never too late to put one in! The bees sometimes won't come to a manmade nest for a year or two after it's installed for some reason, so if you want to make one, there's no time like the present!
Did any bees use it? How can they find the entrance to start with- does it need a way-in sign post?!
