Saw in a video that the YES followers were divided into the Troopers and Generators. I’d have to even say there are T.2, T.3 and at least a G.2 version in there. Crimson had plenty of iterations. Genesis seemed to be more of a Paring Away situation. Calling All Stations was fairly abysmal finally. A cool video on here is with Milwaukee native Daryl and how he got the gig as their touring player. He goes back farther than most people realize. Have you listened to any of Hackett’s Genesis Revisited material? Fifth of Firth is awesome. Most of this is IMHO as Afam and bass player.

Genesis is number one for me. Yes, Crimson, and Gentle Giant are the other big guns in the genre.
HOT TAKE #1: Pink Floyd is not a Prog band in the same sense that Led Zeppelin or Steely Dan were not Prog bands. Floyd were a super creative group in a super creative musical era, that doesn't make them Prog.
HOT TAKE #2: Rush is not Prog. I love Rush to death but they are a hard rock group that was heavily influenced by Prog, that doesn't make them Prog. Rush were too simplistic to really be Prog, but they were obviously Prog-influenced.

@Neal Borganelli "Simplistic" is a relative term. Relative to typical rock bands, Rush's music is complex. Relative to Prog bands like Yes, Genesis, King Crimson, and Gentle Giant, Rush's music is simplistic, and Geddy and Alex are the first ones to admit that they were doing a simplified version as a 3-piece from what typical 5-piece Prog bands were doing.

King Crimson is too far away from Jethro Tull , only the first three albums are masterpieces from K Crimson, the rest are progressive noise without musical sense , All Jethro Tull albums are masterpieces including the last one , The Christmas Album. Only with Thick as a Brick and Passion Play, Jethro Tull are the best of all times. No band could have produced the smart sophisticated and geniality music of these two albums.

That Gentle Giant is NOT No. 1 should be a capitol offence. They were, and are, ahead of most everyone, accessible to all from the sheeple of Genesis and Yes, to the Zappa enthusiasts like myself. They are not merely music, but auditory literature. Gentle Giant was indeed exceptional ... the best.
All Time Classic prog LPs from the first self titled release right thru Interview were extraordinary
Even the later non prog LPs by Gentle Giant were good to great.
King Crimson, Genesis, Yes and esp Tull put out 3 or 4 really excellent albums each,

Also at least I have one contemporary band in the list. Pink Floyd may have been very successful commercially, but their songs are too simple to be called prog in my opinion. If individual artists qualify as bands, Frank Zappa should be on the list instead of Steven Wilson.

Fun fact: Mike Pinder, keyboardist for the Moody Blues, was good friends with John and Paul from the time the Moodies toured with the Beatles in 1965. Pinder worked for Streetly Electronics, manufacturer of the mellotron, prior to forming the Moody Blues and was probably the only performer who could (and did) repair his own mellotron on stage. He turned on John and Paul to the mellotron in 1966.

Their songs aren’t particularly hard to play; hence, they’re not “progressive rock.” Also, this is just a matter of personal taste, but Rush and Jethro Tull should be in the top 3 along with Yes. One more note: although Jethro Tull made LOTS of concept albums, Aqualung is not one of em. Hymn 43, My God, and Wind-up (and Wond’ring Aloud to a far lesser extent) all deal with religion but that’s as close as it comes to being a concept album. Fxxxing great album on every level, though.

These lists are great for the sake of discussion and for people to give suggestions. Some of us, especially those who are new to progressive rock, can then find some interesting new music.
However, to mention which ones are "the best" is pointless and absurd. Many of these bands are very different and people appreciate different kinds of music. It's time to use the correct words for it... Some people prefer some of these bands over others. It's a matter of taste and it has nothing to do about being "best" of anything. Music isn't a competition.
So, I definitely like this list and I "prefer to listen" most of these bands mentioned on the list instead of many others. I might as well make another list because I also like to listen some of these other progressive rock bands and artists. Some of them aren't exactly prog but I'll still add them to this list, which is in no particular order:

    Anthony Phillips
    Pekka Pohjola
    Tasavallan Presidentti
    Tabula Rasa
    Scapa Flow
This is a quick list and I probably forgot to mention some of them. I focused on the earlier prog but there are many modern prog rock bands that are great. Just a quick suggestion for some modern prog: Check out some of the bands by Arjen Anthony Lucassen, like "Ayreon".
I don't like to give any specific suggestions for any albums or songs. Music is best when you discover it yourself... All of these bands are worth listening to. Some aren't always your cup of tea but it doesn't mean they aren't making some good quality music. Some of the prog rock bands (and bands of other genres) are unique. So, you could say that many of them are the best in their own style. :-) Take care and enjoy the music.

Agreed with music is not a competition. I would also add Traffic to your list.

Putting Rush ahead of Tull and ELP is ridiculous. Rush only started being prog. AFTER those bands had already done their finest work - and the same with putting Wilson ahead of ELP and Gentle Giant.

And put Jethro Tull behind Genesis, king Crimson , Pink Floyd and Yes is also ridiculous and forget Camel is again lack of knowledge of prog rock smart and complex sophisticated.

Yes and Genesis gave the world a lot of brilliant albums that's why they're on the top and they were led by the super guitarists who have the same first name - Steve

This narrator sounds like he's never listened to Prog in his life.
Futhermore, Steven Wilson is not a band. If you wanted to include him, then put Porcupine Tree.

Video better called "All the music I've loved my entire life"
Note 1: Yep, Invisible Touch for Genesis and Owner of a Lonely Heart for Yes... really?
Note 2: Intro music reminded too much "Bill Bailey's Top Ten Prog Rock"
Note 3: There is an inherent problem when trying to rank only in Top 10, since there are easily 25 Prog Rock bands we love, plus all the other bands with some progressive episodes in their careers, such acts like Led Zep, Queen, et al.

    Giles,Giles,and Fripp,
King Crimson, and McDonald and Giles.
    My 3 favorites.
The lines are blurry to me with Floyd included, but I agree. And if Floyd's
there then I will have to give a nod to Syd Barrett, Kevin Ayers/Soft Machine and Gong.

How can you put Emerson, Lake, & Palmer at #9? Pink Floyd should be #1, ELP at #2, and Yes at #3. The rest really can't touch these top 3. Take a popular vote, and see how your flawed opinion stands up to it!

Kansas has GOT to be on this list. They took prog and made it American. And they're at least as recent as Steven Wilson; "The Absence of Presence" just came out last year, after all. :D
