I remember when Sabbath, and Deep Purple were considered Acid Rock

Black Sabbath was by far my favourite band. They still very much are still. There's never a week, possibly even a day that goes by that I don't listen to Black Sabbath. I love Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple, But it is Sabbath I always felt the closest to for 50 years now. Im 61 and first discovered the song Paranoid on an 8 track hits compilation my brother in law gave to me. The song Paranoid was tucked between BTOs "Let It Ride" and Gladys Night and the Pips " Midnight Train To Georgia." I used keep rewinding to replay "Paranoid" over and over until finally the cassette gave in or the player did because it got eaten up in the player. I didn't know who Black Sabbath was then. Then, that same summer, my sister's boyfriend challenged me to jump across a river in the middle of town. It wasn't big or anything, but there were craggy rocks on both sides. If I could do it he said he would give me his Black Sabbath Vol. 4 album. I did it. I landed in those jaded rocks on the orher side full body slam straight into them. My elbows, ribs, side of my face, knees, shins, everywhere waa torn and bleeding, but I got the album for 100% effort because he said, technically, I didn't make it across, I just slammed into the stones. He gave me the album and I went straight home having no genuine idea what I was going to hear, but somehow, I knew I was going to love it and right from the first notes of "Wheels Of Confusion" I most certainly did, and still get a charge out it to this day. That's something I continued to get out of Sabbath. I didn't get that from any other band in any period of music both then and now.

Don't agree with Ian. Ian is my favorite singer. Deep Purple my favorite band. Too me it was Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, The who,The Doors, Led Zeppelin. All these bands. But Deep Purple rules!😊

All 3 bands were very important bands of the early 70's they help to change to what music is today. Yes some where more successful than others I myself did like one more than the other 2
But their went beyond just hardrock.

Been listening to their latest releases... and man am I so happy.
Since I was a kid, Deep Purple has been one of my very favorite bands (above led Zeppelin) which brought much teasing from others because they were never actually interested in music.. just the popular 'top 10/40' types while was actually interested in music, rather than popularity.
Led Zeppelin had a leg up from the start..
both Jimmy and John were already well known and mire importantly liked in the studio circuit before led Zeppelin was even an idea..
Ritchie was considered 'quirky'.. difficult to get along with because he was more if an introvert/not very outgoing and friendly and he had a bit of an awkward personality..
But when you compare Jimmy to Ritchie, the level of skill is completely obvious
Deep Purple also went through constant lineup changes from the start.. and again, Ritchie was difficult to work with as he has a very strong personality, and he was constantly searching for a change in sound and delivery.
Led Zeppelin caught on within society easier, because they were just sort of raw and 'Rock n Roll' .. plus they had more support from the industry,
Deep Purple became a more niche popular band.. record labels viewed the band as a bit risky because it didn't have the same stability as led Zeppelin..
The politics of the music industry are harsh and difficult to navigate unless you don't mind just going with the flow (as Zeppelin did)
Jeff Beck was more similar to Ritchie in this context.. as he became bored when in a monotonous situation musically..

Gillan is right. Nobody would have guessed it in the 1970s as BS was considered the weakest of the four (including Uriah Heep). I was a teen back then and still agree with this evaluation. However there is no denial that from 1990 on (likely even before) BS was the most influential and Led Zep the least.

As for me, Led Zeppelin were very experimental, only within already established genres, so their music was more understandable and popular than the music of the other two of the triumvirate; Deep Purple's experiments were innovative, but in general they had a greater influence on individual performers, although they made a significant contribution to the development of metal; But the experiments of Black Sabbath influenced more the groups than the performers, which is more noticeable than the influence of Deep Purple.

  • @warthogA10
    @warthogA10 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Back in the days.. these bands sort of made jokes about Black Sabbath.. because it scared them. 🤣
Members of Deep Purple, and led Zeppelin would make little jokes, digs at Sabbath's expense, but in reality they were all basically mates..
but just as with any business, there's a competition.
Publicly they'd throw digs/shade at one another and pretend to not be interested..
but privately they all respect one another..
In the early days though there were personal behavior clashes among all these people, especially due to members of sabbath having heavy drug addictions/dependencies.. in contrast to members of Zeppelin and Purple being mostly heavy drinkers, and a bit less with the drugs (well, as far as they say publicly)
It seems difficult for society to think about what made/makes a band 'important' because most people confuse this with popularity..
The question isn't about, or asking "who's your favorite" or "which is best" (the latter is ridiculous because none are "the best" it just breaks down to who's your personal favorite.)
Black Sabbath was important because they created a new sound, they didn't follow the mainstream.. which opened a door to an entirely new space or room for music..
Kiss did the same, but in different ways.
Alice in chains was an important band as well (even more so than Nirvana)
The most recent band which I consider as important is called Highly Suspect..
and they are not nearly as well known as they should be, which is bizarre to me.

Zeppelin, Sabbath and Deep Purple in that order for me, Zeppelin was the best hard rock band ever and sounded better than anyone else, period. Sabbath was the first heavy metal band and not far behind. Deep Purple influenced countless bands and come right after the other 2 for me. They all are Rock Gods, they are all worthy of their status in music history.

Unholy trinity? Hardly. All three were important to the progress of heavy rock as a genre. But to call them unholy is a stretch. Pagan influences maybe. But read the lyrics to sabbaths master of reality. They are very pro Christian. Not that sabbath was a Christian band. But unholy like devil worshippers. I think not.

Sure ,The Ozz Man bills himself as the prince of Darkness, but Phil shouted hail satan!!! before they went into By Demons be Driven and about 30-40k sounded off. I did not.
