- In this video I share my experience with the Shenzen Basen Technology 12V 100Ah battery as well as the big brother with 300Ah capacity.
I do a little flyover on the other batteries I have tested so far, before we start with the first capacity test. I was really expecting a lot of these batteries as Basen is a reliable supplier of batteries for a long time . Many of you (an me) have bought from them in the past. They receive good feedback in forums and have not let us down. Therefore, my expectation was high.
Can they deliver and will both batteries live up to their reputation?

I have Basen 100Ah, it delivers 106 ah.
After 5 cycles, the balancing was perfect, having stayed within 6 mah since.

DJLBERMPW Lithium battery 12V 300AH LiFePO4 Battery. I've done two discharge tests on. A .06C (18 amps) from 13.5v SOC down to 12v (10%). Took 18 hrs 320+ a/hr. Second test, a .36C test (109 amps, 1,600 watts) from 13.56v SOC down to 12v. Took 2.25 hrs (3,600 w/hrs) This used approx. 90% of the battery. BMS disconnect at 10v so 10% reserved equals 4,000 w/hrs

Im glad that Basen did not sent you some 'special version for review' but actually you got what people would get. 90% of review units always is specially made to be better...and those reviewers than prise products, people buy but gets some other crap.

If they would send TH-camrs selected products, that would fire back quickly and bankrupt them in no time.
I accidentally ordered a JK BMS with 0.6 amp balancing but it turned out to be sufficient for my off-grid cabin which is only used in long weekends mostly. So it has 4 days to balance before getting used to 80% 90% of its capacity.
Every setup is as good as it gets used maybe to some extent

Nice 300 battery,
Just a tip, for that small ehite charger/power supply. Build a cable, with banana clips, use 2.5mm 230v ac home wiring cable with slightly larger crocodile clamps (looks like miniature car jumper clamps) they are able to deliver alot more power, the stop cables I find are 30% less efficient.
I built 2 sets and use one on the power supply and the other occasionally on that nice uni-t volt meter, then don't have to always hold it or put the meter down to measure.
Thanks Wayne, the cables are truly too thin on this 5A power supply and the voltage drop is sometimes an issue. I just don't have time to make these devices better so they have to stay as they are for the time 😉

Cells arrived and I have 500A jkbms. I need to get external relays for this. Manual just in chinese but I think i’ve managed to translate enough of it to understand what’s needed.

On a tangent, I recently read that the individual battery cells such as those proposed by Amy at QSO need to be tightly harnessed to avoid battery expansion. Is this potentially something that you need to do for your big battery bank (and mine) or not?!

Great test as always, I would think the manufacture would test the batteries before sending them to you. By the way, I have changed all my equipment to Victron and would like you to do a review of the DVCC settings in the Victron equipment which can share current, voltage and temp readings between all of the Victron units. Thanks
Enabling DVCC does not make a difference for me as I'm off-grid and don't use ESS (yet). All my devices are communicating via a Bluetooth network and the smart shunt is the 'point of truth' in my system in terms of current, voltage and SOC. It is broadcasting these information to all SCC and also the Multi.
they are chinese, their prices are mcuh lower... less people do the job-less expenses-lower price.
An external balance plug or connection would be a nice feature to have on this type of battery

That is a problem with the JBD smart BMS. You would think they could just update the app so they could balance during both charging and discharging. I've actually found that it's best to have it on during charging so it will keep the high cells down so you can get a higher charge. Once my batteries are charged full and balanced, they stay balanced during discharging. Just my experience. Others may be different. Another great video!😎
I've had my ah capacity in the app change on me also. Had to get in the app and change it back.
Also I had to order one of those 40 amp power supplies. Can't wait to get it. Hope yours is working out for you.
But if you balance during charging, it only takes away these 60mA per cell wich gets balanced. A 10A charge current would then be reduced to 9.94A for this one cell. If you have perfectly matched cells, it may work if they are fully top balanced but many people buy cheap cells which are not perfectly matched.
The power supply is great and delivers 1.2kW all day long if needed. It's a bit noisy though.
@@OffGridGarageAustralia I guess my situation is a little different. I have 8 - 24v 8s banks all in parallel. Each one has a 100a BMS in it. I'm actually capable of delivering 800 amps, but I never take any of them over 40 amps each. 320a total. I figure that I can loose as many as 4 banks and still be up and running. I have one backup BMS in case I loose one.
Fyi: if you every buy cells from basen: „Because you said there was no problem with the battery when you just received it, so it was caused by improper operation in the process of use.“ = no warranty at all😂
it makes sense to ship the bms with the charge balance on to avoid waisting energy during storage and draining
I don't think this is the reason. The balancing would only kick in if the cells are reaching 3.45V. Someone would need to charge the battery during transport. Unlikely...

It would be interesting to know, how that 12V/ 300A/hr would go with supplying a 12V 1,000Watts converter to see how many times, it would boil a 900Watt/240volt kettle for?!! Always makes a good test for a signs of a good battery. Regards George.

I am quite sure that no engineer went to a drawing board to change anything, as you say at 12:10, they will just have changed the specs on paper. Anyway, no LiFePo4 battery likes the serial configuration of several packs with individual BMS.

The thing with turning off the charge balance is that then it doesn't balance when it is charging at least that's how mine work
What I did to combat this is to buy a super cheap BMS and just connect the balance leads no current flows through this but it is set for charge balance off
Thanks for the video Andy! Regarding the 100ah version. What configuration is inside? I understood basen offers a 4p4s version (with 4*4*25ah pouch cells) and 4p1s (with 4*100ah prismatic cells inside). The prismatic cells are a bit more expensive. Apart from the costs, this difference may have an effect on performance. What's your take on this? Thanks
Are pouch cells less performant than prismatic cells? And in which way?
@@OffGridGarageAustralia thanks for your answer. I don't know if they would be less performant, I was hoping to find that out. I figured because the pouch cells are a bit cheaper they might perform differently but that's just a guess, I don't have the knowledge.
Cheap battery's have a lower discharge rating as they use cheaper cells with a low c rate. No point fitting a 150a bms to a 100ah battery if the cells are 1c max. Its common to use smaller bms to compensate for the low grade cells. Basen are good but the cheap pre built battery's no doubt are using the old model cells with lower c rates as a way to clear stock with the newer higher c rate cells coming out. Hence that's what you get for that price.

Makes me wonder if they took all the unmatched cells after sending out matched packs and built batteries out of them. I would be curious, if you do crack them open at some point, to see how matched their internal resistances are. - Edit: Ah, you said that the cells might be mis-matched. Here I thought I was being insightful. lol!
I've done 2 full cycles on the 100Ah battery now and every time I charge it up again, the top balance is destroyed. Never have seen this before. Even with unmatched cells this should not happen...
@@OffGridGarageAustralia I bought supposedly "New, Grade A, Matched" cells from a US supplier last year and they're doing exactly the same thing. Top balance, one cycle, even a small cycle like down to 70% State of Charge, and the top balance is so far gone that one cell will hit 3.650 before the slowest cell hits 3.450.

Hi Andy. Great channel. I note that some supplier state that you can only connect 4 lithium batteries in parallel. Do you know the reason for this? I wonder if you can connect connect in parallel batteries of different sizes? E.g 100ah and 200ah batteries? The reason for my last question is that I have space problem in my boat. I have space for 2x200ah at one location and 1x 100ah another location.
Andy in the BMS app you can change the name to anything you want for individual BMS
If you click the three lines in the top left corner and then app settings then device model click there and change the name to whatever you want
Then you can switch between them by clicking those three little lines at the main screen and then the name that you are currently on will be under that chain symbol if you click on that it will take you back to the list
Also I should mention that that name that you create seems to be saved to the BMS itself so if you pick up a new phone or something and go in that app they'll already be on there

OK so I would like to mention how I top balance my 100ah batteries when I got them. Charge them to between 13.8 or 14v. As long as bms does not cut off. Then turn off charge balance so the bms can start to balance. The I start to charge at .2 amps. This way you can charge very low and balance at the same time because bms does not know it is being charges at such a low amperage. Can maybe go as high as .7 amps but works better at .2 amps. Can take over night, but it will balance cells very well this way. I think it is the quickest way also. Give it a try next time. My aolithium batteries are perfect now and keep the charge balance on.
They may have built your 300Ah with 160Ah cells (my Basen 300Ah were, so they are actually 320Ah). I have their 100Ah (bluetooth and low temp protection) and they were balanced well when shipped to me. So were the 320Ah batteries. I did however have other issues with their batteries.
Thanks for sharing. Either 3x 105Ah or 2x 160Ah cells, both could be possible. Either way, I like that they take larger cells and rating the capacity lower. That's good from a customer satisfaction.
@@OffGridGarageAustralia I think they ran out of regular cells (I was told), so it may be temporary. If they are new cells, and 160Ah, shouldn't they pull 5% above rated capacity (or more)? Ditto for the 100Ah.
The specific charger you are using (adjustable power supply) probably can get the 300 ah battery to get balanced with those settings, but a fool proof way is to adjust the smart BMS settings correctly. Overvoltage release set to 3.5v and balance turn on voltage needs to be set at 3.49 or anything below the overvoltage release voltage then the battery will balance perfect without having to have a trickle or special low current adjustable voltage power supply charger.
It took me a long time to top balance both batteries because of the tiny balance current of the BMS.
Yes, these settings you mentioned will work just fine. I set the release and balance start to 3.6V for this test so it balances quicker. It did it for both batteries over night with the power supply connected.

Hi, we just build a 4s2p system out of 8 200Ah batteries from Shenzen Basen. So far it works, but we need more Solar panels to get the batteries charged…
As Equalizer I could not find anything better than the HA02. Unfortunately this has no option to connect to our Growatt inverter. Any ideas for a better 4s balancer (including a RS485 interface for our inverter)?
Is there any benefit having 1 300ah battery as opposes to 3 100ah batteries? Will you be able to pull the same loads from both?
When you place the order with them you can spec which BMS you want, so off you want a 200a BMS you can have it.

So I presume they can spec for you, also a heater inside for cold weather countries
There's a good chance the BMS inside is bigger and they just don't change the lable on the outside. Might be worth checking with them or even do some tests 😉☺️
you should try a capacity test with grade B cell just to see the differences
I wondering on the charge balance current if you look at the BMS that is controlled by a couple of resistors I wonder if anybody has experimented with changing the value of those resistors the ones that I have in the specifications it says 30 to 60 milliamp so if it's doing either one cell or up to all odd or even cells then that would be 60 milliamp but if it's switching between odds and evens then it would be only 30
I think first I'll measure the resistors in it see what they are and then at least double the resistance maybe up the current to something more reasonable like 300 milliamp
How much in current flow it makes to connect i.e. 2x 18650 cells with 0,1v voltage difference in parallel? Just thinking, 1. how big thing small voltage differences are?
2. how reliable readings the BMSs, shunts, multimeters are giving?
I have 4 different devices (Imax B6 replica, proper bench supply from work and two multimeters) with voltage display/measuring capability and none of them shows exactly same readings.
What is wrong with the discharge amp rating? What situation would you need a 300ah battery to drain in less than 2 hours?

@@OffGridGarageAustralia Agreed 100%! When in an RV, we don’t need big current for very long, BUT we DO need it.
In my 6.5 year old self built system (400Ah with 4x Winston cells, for 12v), I’ll often use close to around 200A for a few minutes at a time for cooking etc.
ie: It may not be for very long, but we do absolutely need it. 2.0kW will pull pretty close to 200Amps on 12v with inverter losses etc.
Virtually the WHOLE caravan runs on 12v- ie: almost everything, including all lights, television and satellite box, range hood, hot water system ignition, DC-DC charger from the car, USB outlets, and much more. (Going to a 24v system to halve the current would be prohibitively expensive).

Thank you for the test, when you speak about discharging current of 100 A from the manual, you can see on the case of the large battery that it have a 50 A charge current and a 150 A discharge current. who is right ? the manual or the case ?
The 100Ah had 100 A discharge and the 300Ah had 150 A discharge. It is written on the case and in the manual. André
They wanted you to review it so you could show them how to make it work they do sell good battery cells thoue ive been buying from them for the last two year's ya get what ya pay for

This balancing is not "stupid", it's "sub-optimal"

Andy I once tried two 12V Lifepo4 batteries in series and they got hopelessly out of balance and I had to buy an equaliser before I could use them at 24V. It would be good to see if you could actually run 4 of these in series for your 48V system?
I would love to do a test and put 4 batteries in series. They sent me only one each though 🤷♂️
Some manufacturer actually tell you to do some maintenance on such a pack 1-2 times a year and charge them up individually to balance them all. It's certainly not ideal unless they would hand pick and match the cells of all 4 batteries.
Those of use who've been playing with electric R/C airplanes and cars already have those balance adapter chargers which can simultaneously charge the battery and balance the cells.
Although the cells are 3.7 volts each in this application, the process is the same.
In starting the system every battery must be equally matched as close as possible so that they can maintain balance.
You're already charging them at 48v and with a voltage monitor on every battery you can tell the state of charge of each "cell."
Our "smart chargers" charge all the cells in series and charge the individual cells at the same time until finished.
Charge balance is on, as in storage and shipping the balancer would flatten the battery
A lot of those kind of cases are actually just 12v gel/agm lead acid battery cases
What is the limiting factor on parallel connection? The BMS?
There should be not limit for parallel connections, I believe.

Buyer Beware...Shenzhen Facewell Batteries Store makes you wait 60 days and you still do not get your battries !!! And you end up in dispute with Paypal.
Maybe a quick strange thought, when the charge balance is turned off, the pack might be discharged over time due to unlimited balancing (or are there features to stop it).
It only balances until the cell drops back below the balance start voltage.
The start balance voltage should be set to 3.45V or higher. This is already in the steep part of the curve and the battery is 97-99% charged.
I took bare cells and the bms from them as I have trust issues when it comes to ready to go battery, probably my issue ahahah what I am not able to see ever is the app that you are using for my BMS (they are same brand and all) it looks similar and all but for some reason it doesn't show the batteries as on yours, and it doesn't show the charge and discharge switch or those settings panels. could any of you that have it as him share their link to the app to me please? thank you very much
If you need over 100A, you need more battery capacity. My 132kWh bank, consisting of 10 batteries never see more than 40A charge or discharge. I have 2 ga and 100A breaker on each battery. I've been off grid 4 weeks, powering 4 heat pumps(6.25Ton), 80 gal wh, electric range and more. Love our two Sol-Ark 12K's and 48 430W QCells.
If you need more than 100A, you need a different battery. Most batteries these days can deliver at least 150A or even 250A if they are well build.
I often pull 200A from my 400Ah caravan battery, even though not for very long at any one time.
100A is definitely NOT enough for a 300Ah battery- might be barely acceptable on the 100Ah battery, though is still not ideal.
People need to understand that RV use is very different to home/off grid usage. You can’t carry around huge battery banks in an RV. Both weight and space are at a premium.
They always ship batteries at a lower state of charge. All the manufactures do is match the cells with a similar voltage, with a similar resistance, after the cells are left to stand for a month or two. To make sure the cells dont have a voltage drop over that period of time. They dont top balance the cells.
They top balanced the other batteries I have. It should be part of the battery testing they do.

I bought an 11.7kw Basin green Lifepo4 51.2V battery. I will charge a BG battery with solar panels via a Victron MPPT 150/35. I will charge the Delta pro from BG battery (sketch).
Output from BG battery is 50Ah (200Ah max).
After a minute of charging with an output power of 15.5A, the output power from the BG battery started to drop to 3A and then back up to 5A, thus minimally charging the Delta Pro in waves (3A 5A 3A 5A, ...). Could it be a power output problem with too much amperage (DP max input xt60 is 15A)? How can I solve this?
You will probably find that 300Ah battery has 12 cells in it (3x100Ah batteries) with a configuration of 4s3p 🤷♂️.
The BMS would be seeing 1 cell but 3 would be parallel. Maybe that is causing the balance issue.
I couldn't see the spec labels clearly on my phone. So the batteries have low temperature charging protection?
EDIT: nevermind. Your video has convinced me to not consider buying these batteries. Most new grade A cells are achieving better than 100% capacity and your 100 AH only hot 98%

Charge balance only balances while charging. If the battery just sits there or discharges, no balancing happens. It's the stupid JBD BMS they are using. Daly does the same though....

I have a good question for you, about these brands.
I know that Basen and other "manufacturers" have a "wearhouse" in Germany or Poland, basically in Europe.
Why the average customer in Europe after all this time (Basen is not a new company) doesn't have the possibility to order directly from the wearhouse stock!?
I think it's time to these companies give us, the customer the option to "easily" pay in EUR and have a swift dispatch of the order...
For an European consumer he will be more comfortable doing these transactions in the EU (Consumer protection).
Does Basen has an European site or phone number to order directly that I don't know about!? 🤔🤔🤔

A little bit of topic but relevant to many of us europeans....
They ship to France but not to Germany so it would be surprising if they have a warehouse in Germany.
Also they charge 600$ to ship one 12v battery to France, so I doubt they're sent from Europe
I think they have a warehouse in Poland but all ordering goes via China. The delivery of the goods will be from this warehouse so a lot faster than from China directly. I think this is cheaper for them in regards to import taxes. I don't think this will change though.

What happened to your fancy tester that would charge and discharge and give you graphs of the discharge in charge curve?
I think that is what he plans for the next video, at least for the 100Ah battery. (It's a 20A test unit, which is 0.2c for the 100Ah battery. The 300Ah battery would require a tester capable of 60Ah discharge to get a 0.2c discharge test)
In this video, he said he didn't want to waste the energy by discharging that way, so instead he tried to get ~60% retention by discharging through an invert which powered his bench-top power supply, to charge his big DIY battery bank.
My jbd batteries were all top balanced with the jbd at 3 amp charge and they work fine. But I cycled the top balance charge three times. But my connections/packes were all opened and verified . Weird luck

Maybe if it's off grid friendly security cameras, and such, something that can solar charge it's self. Or low power to be used off grid!

The 300AH looked promising but the weak (100A) discharge is a not good. People like big inverters for induction cooking. But a single 300A can't deliver the power needs. My Victron phoenix 2000VA is running of 2 Aolithium. It can barely run on 1. I did a test discharge of 115ah continues and then the single aolithium battery heats up alot to 38 degrees. With 2 batteries I pull 70ah per battery and that is good. The basen 300A should be 250ah discharge. Then it would be a great battery!
It's the other way around, Victor: 300Ah capacity and 100A current. Don't mix up the units 😉
I totally agree, 150A is a bit on the low side for such a high battery. it should be able to handle 250A at least.
I am interested in using 4 24vdc 280 to 300ah batteries to build a usable 500+ ah 48vdc bank for a sailboat.

@28:30 you say "installing a JBD BMS in such a battery is a mistake" Aren't the imbalance issues more influenced by poor top balance or low quality or mismatched cells than the JBD BMS? If not, what BMS characteristics are required for such a battery? Also, in practice wouldn't you set the charge controller or inverter charger in a range not to turn off the BMS for cell over or under voltage?
Yes, this is a theory and the BMS should be able to handle it once fully top balanced. As we could see in this test, after a perfect top balance and only one cycle, the 100Ah battery was totally out of balance again. I'm not sure if this a problem with the cells or the BMS itself.

Your videos helped me with the confidence to build (and just finish) a Victron system with (2) Quattro 48/5000/70 in a NA split-phase configuration, (16) SunPower 415W panels, Victron MPPT RS 450/100, 500A SmartShunt, (2) Lynx Power In buss bars, Cerbo GX and (2) 48V batteries using EVE LF304 cells and 100A OverKill Solar 16s BMS's. Everything has come up and worked out of the box. Only a couple of parameter changes. I saved a ton of money doing everything myself, especially on the batteries. A 6-pack of S.P.A.T. on it's way to you!

That is correct.
Maybe charging at about 1amp or so, at 14-15v to allow the BMS to balance, so nearly the same charge current as balance current, these batteries need another balance board added maybe a small active balancer
It's not the same current though. If you charge with 1A it would reduce the current for the cells which get balanced by 60mA, so they get only 0.94A.
Andy The initial capacity of fresh cells soon settles back after the first 20 or so cycles - With matched 280 ah cells from the same batch 60ma bleed will comfortably keep the pack in balance - I made an e bike pack up once with cells from 3 different sources and it always took nearly an hour to top balance - a similar pack with matched cells took less than 10 min

@@OffGridGarageAustralia In my experience new Lifepo4 batteries consistently seem to lose about 2% of their initial capacity after assembly quite quickly then stabilise - try it out re-test after 20 or so cycles - its seems even more pronounced on li-ion e bike packs - I suspect its a kind of phenomena that a pack conforms to its weakens cell - a bit like a chain to its weakest link

Have done this balancing horror with other batterys as well - took me sometimes a week per baöttery! They also drift again like yoursv- even without using them at all, just stays at 80% ... Not worth it, build your own system with a good Bms with higher balance current.
I'd say you would need atleast 200amp bms discharge considering if your going in a camper trailer, caravan and using 12v.. with a inverter running a induction stove at max 2000w.. your looking at 170amp discharge. So yea I'd sayou you would anything of over 200= amp smart bms for batteries over 200ah
That's makes sense. I found it a bit underwhelming too, having a 150A max current for such a large battery.
Yes, with inverter losses for 2kW you absolutely NEED 200Amp capability. Anything less is NOT ok.
It’s just not an option to switch most RVs to 24v. Virtually everything is 12v based, so you need that 200 amps.

That's not imbalancing, that is because the battery cell is almost fully charged. If you understand the profile curve of lithium iron battery, you will find the voltage is very unstable when over 3.4V, it will jump to 3.6 more within a very short time.
If you disconnect the charge and wait 1 hour also, the voltage of each cell will be balanced.
Well, I should do more testing to learn a bit more about these batteries, I guess 🙄
If you wait for an hour, the cells won't be balanced, only the voltage shows the same value.
I apreciate the work, but to be honest, more than half of the video is more about the "hey, it's me, the one famous channel on youtube" and sound very picky about minor details, before actually showing something interesting about the product. Maybe focus a little bit on what people out there are interested in, and thats probably not your fully CV and first childhood memory ;-)
I'm not sure about the testing. I know its fancy but going back to basics isn't 20 amps constant draw for over 5 hours >100 AH?. Could the testing gadgets be skewing the results a small amount?. even 19.9 (as shown on the tester at one point) for 5 hours is 99.5AH?.
I reckon Andy was hoping for a bonus 5-10% over the rating, as you get in the "branded" commercial batteries. For the average joe, that 100Ah performed "within tolerances"
If you can get 5-10% extra on a brand new battery, it means it delivers the rated capacity for a longer time, as the battery degrades throughout its lifetime. These figures are 0%-100% SOC tests. You want to avoid these extremes and stick to something like 10-15% for "fully discharged" and perhaps 90-95% fully charged, which will extend the lifetime/cycle count of the battery. This will result in less than the rated capacity when used. Obviously, if you need that rated capacity as a minimum, you should buy more batteries to ensure you get what you need, while using the 10-95% SOC cycle limits.
