- The occasion was the 40th anniversary of the Newport Jazz Festival, held in a tent on the lawn of the White House. A host of jazz legends played, and at the conclusion Clinton called them all up on stage for a bow. He said a little speech, thanks for coming and goodnight, and then... almost as soon as he finished talking, people in the audience started yelling for him to play. And then the musicians all started asking him to play. He said no at first... but they eventually convinced him.

I think it's more so that it's impressive how well he plays given that he probably gets no time to practice due to how busy he is/was.
Yeah, it sounded like every note had heavy hesitation. It wasn't bad, but it ok.
You have to hand it to him for having the guts to get up there with all those great musicians though - not easy to improvise under that kind of scrutiny!
WOW. What an improv. This just shows how natural he is at it. I used to play alto sax for a couple of years in middle school, and let me tell you improvisation is not easy.

Young Joshua Redman is standing next to him. He had won the Thelonious Monk competition a year or two before that. Probably one of the best sax players of our era(along with Chris Potter). And he has to stand there and just listen to this three note solo just because the guy who plays it is the president.
Yury Schleifman it's not a competition friend. I am quite happy with the fact that we had a president who was interested in life enough to want a little extra on the side. He joins these former presidents who also got caught with their pants down: Thomas Jefferson, Warren Harding, Franklin Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, John Kennedy, & Lyndon Johnson.
He gets credit for having all those players at the White House. He and Obama are the only 2 Pres. that cared enough about music to promote it.

Yes! I met someone who used to play with him in college who- said Bill was a very good horn player. I also heard he recently bought some sheet music so he's back in the saddle again. Go, Bill !! :)

I play sax and once met another sax player who played with Bill Clinton in college. He said Bill was an outstanding sax player back then. It's probably impossible to practice when you're president so he's not at his best but he's pretty good despite not practicing!!

I'm impressed, considering how much time he has to practice. It's clear that he takes it seriously, and that he has some technique.
And is that a horn he's borrowing from someone? It's REALLY hard to play a horn you're not used to. They're all very different.
