  • The best illustrators in the world are well know for being really good at one thing. What are you really good at?
This video will help you identify what you're really good at and also identify some key areas you might need to improve on.
I'm a big believer in focusing on strengths and not worrying too much about weaknesses.

Another great video with a lot of food for thought.
When I commented on your last one, you had me thinking about animals, buildings and landscapes in movies as those three things are my weaknesses.
This video has made me think about how I should play to my strengths (composition, people and objects) but incorporate my weaknesses in small doses to get better at them and see if I actually enjoy doing them too. Top notch advice as always 🙌

Great insights ... I love this! a very straightforward way of seeing things and establishing goals... I do need to take more notes.
I do have a lot of weaknesses in my drawing skills, however, I think the marketing part is my absolute worst trait, prospecting my portfolio has been the hardest of it all

The hardest parts are often the most rewarding!

5:15 I love Ben, and for the longest time I thought the same but here is the thing about skills, that nobody really tells you. It's NOT like stats in games: once you achieve a level, a skill, a strength you get to keep it and move on to the next level, skill or strength...
Unfortunately, in reality you lose whatever you achieved as soon as you stop using it.
That means constant training, just to keep whatever you achieved, and even more training to level up or improve.
Ever since my late teens up until my 30ies I was on a rabid skill hunt without any longterm strategy. I tried to master whatever skill seemed attractive to me at the time, while still practicing the ones I already had. I don't have to tell you how exhausting that is. So the importance of carefully choosing the skills is as important as mastering them.
At 10:44 you briefly mentioned it, and that is the most important part of the video for me.

This is a really good point. Skills do fade if you don’t use them. Picking the right ones and being consistent practicing them is essential!

I’ve had a pretty successful illustration animation career in NZ one of my strengths i guess is that I’m able to take animation skils such as speed and drawing fundamentals but a big weakness i feel is that I’ve never been able to find work I’ve just been lucky to have people find me 😅. I feel like that works in NZ because it’s a small country but I’ve never really had too many offers outside of my country so if you have any advice on finding work outside of my home country I’d love to know 🙏

I didn't know NZ had a big animation scene! So now you've conquered that part of the world, why not try Australia as a first step? Easier to do it in the same time zone. But to be honest, you're not limited by geography if you've got a website and email. You can send your work to anyone in the world! But don't expect them to find you, you have to do the leg work and find the clients and send your work to them

@@TheIllustratorsGuide The animation industry isn’t big here but there are big studios like Weta but it is definitely not a big industry. But thanks for the reply and all the advice🙏🤙🏾

Hi James, I have a question, how successful do you think a realistic style of illustration would be, because my style is less cartoonified or simplistic and more realistic. It’s what I’m most skilled at and what I’d like to stick to, but do you think it’s worth it?
Sorry if this is unrelated, I was just watching some of your videos and really wanted to ask.

    • @TheIllustratorsGuide

I think realistic styles can be very successful. Not every client wants something super stylised. Send me your portfolio on IG or by email and I’ll reply in more detail

I think I’ve spent so much effort on my weaknesses, I’m not sure what my strengths are anymore 🤔
