    Rock&roll was my first ever couloir, but i was lucky to have done it with LOTS more snow on the ground. Thanks for giving us some tips for skiing it under less ideal conditions!

    I think it would be a good idea also to mention is going from safe spot to safe spot, since an avalanche in a couloir can give you quite a bad day!

    Wow this is amazing and it is great to talk about all the different turns we.can use to get through something. We have to use every bit of technique in our armoury!

    You are a great teacher! I like your explanations. You have a great style of communication. I am surprised you only have 3,000 views. Perhaps engaging another person in the movie for dialogue, and adding ski humor.

    Great tips, thank you for the advice. I think the comment about the strong foundation has always been key for me to prevent over rotating a turn in Couloirs. Making confident, consistent turns, and really paying attention to the available snow grip along the entire edge. I've still got some learning to do, but this was really helpful. Cheers.

    Hey great tutorial, do you think having moderate length skis are better or worse for this? Last season I stepped up to 179 length skis (I am 5’10) they’re basically taller than me. They were a bit harder to handle in glades last year. Thinking they’d be rough in a couloir.

    • @Inthesnowmag
      @Inthesnowmag  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes quite possible. It depends where the rocker is to your height. But most importantly it's how nimble you feel it is.

    My method:
    1) Alert the ski patrol that I will be attempting the couloir.
    2) Have a second party alert them to pick my mangled corpse off the rocks at the bottom.

    Is it true that side-slipping is bad etiquette because it plows all the good snow from the run for other skiers?

    • @lucasjohnston6111

      yes and it's not skiing

      I still feel like side slipping in skis takes less snow away than a snowboarder completely plowing all of it out of there…

    • @srdast
      @srdast 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lucasjohnston6111 I'm a novice skier and have a serious question... I've seen a lot of these videos and it seems to me skiers seem to rely almost exclusively on sideslipping and jump turns in these sorts of terrain...It makes me wonder what the heck is the point of doing this? Part of the joy of skiing (for me) is gliding, speed, and deliciously-elegant turns...this kind of activity really just makes me wonder -it's just controlling speed, dodging rocks, and trying not to die...What am I missing?

    • @LeDore38
      @LeDore38 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@srdast different kind of fun. Solving a puzzle with the tools you have at your disposal (better to avoid side slipping if possible tho).
      I find jump turns fun too.
      Also, couloirs often give access to terrain with better snow than easily accessible parts of the mountain.

      Don't slide slip down the whole thing but if you need to side slip to get past the entrance or a tricky spot, that's fine.

    I thought it was bad form for novice skiers to slide slip off all of the good snow for the good skiers? Don't worry I'm not going to Verbier anytime soon, especially that couloir.
