Rajarshi Nandy did give good amount of information about lord dattatreya, but he missed some points. lord datta is not only the avatar of lord shiva and lord vishnu, he is also of the lord brahma (but he is considered one of the 24 avatars of lord vishnu) you can easily see it in the image of lord datta, each head and a pair of hands represents each of the tridev. lord dattatreya is the physical manifestation of Brahman, the fact that he is the trimurti himself. he also forgot to tell you the meaning behind the 4 dogs which represents each of the vedas and the cow which represents Kaam dhenu or the Mother earth. them being near to his feet shows that he is way beyond the vedas, earthly attachments and nature itself. this is why lord dattatreya is commonly shown with a simple attire as a saint. In the 4th adhyay of 'Shree Guru Charitra' ( the book on the life of lord dattatreya's 2nd avatar- shree Narsimha Saraswati) birth of lord dattatreya is well explained. The birth story might be a little different from here in maharashtra, where lord dattatreya is most worshipped with his 1st avatar shreepad shree Vallabha and Swami Samarth as the 3rd one. well this is what i have thought to be missing in the information, so i hope this might have helped you out to understand more about lord Dattatreya. 🙏ॐ श्री गुरुदत्तात्रेय श्रीपाद श्री वल्लभाय नमः🙏

and also Dattha and Anagha matha has Astha Siddhis has sons. So to get all SIDDHI's, one has to pray to them for easy attainment. In Sri Pada vallabha Charitha, Sripada ( datha himself) mentioned that Anagha Matha ( Shakthi of Datha) is manifestation of all Dasa Maha Vidyas and doing Angha Vrat will give all results of Dasa maha vidya sadhana.
Dattatreya’s birth is interesting. He is Son of Mata Anasuya and Rishi Atri. The trinity lord Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshwara disguised as sadhus came to test Mata Anasuya’s Pati Vrata dharma begging for alms.
The trinity lords asked to serve iccha bhojan being naked. She then prays to her husband Rishi Atri in her mind. With her husband’s help she gets to know they are trinity lords themselves. She says a woman can feed being naked only to her babies then trinity lord turn into babies. She feeds 3 babies.
Then Rishi Aattri arrives … Both husband n wife feed the babies.
Being satisfied, trinity lord tells to ask for a boon. The couple requests trinity lords to be born as their son. This is how lord Dattatreya is born. So he is amsa of Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar.

Shri Duttatreya is worshiped in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and a few parts of Tamilnadu. His poorna avataras were Shripad Shrivallabh(born in Pithapuram), Narasinh Saraswati(born in Laad Karanja) and Shri swami samarth(a couple of theories on his prakatikaran are there). There have been many ansh avatars as well. As per Shri Dutt Mahatmya his bhakti is rare. Hence, it's not widespread like other deties.
An avatar of Lord Datta is currently living and has His main ashram in Mysuru. Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji. There is also the Datta Stavam which is a powerful prayer about Lord Dattatreya. Om Draam Dattaya Namaha is a powerful maha mantra also. 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Jaya Guru Datta. ❤

Bhagwan Shree Dattatreya is Guru of all Guru's. In his avatara of Shree Swami Samartha of Akkalkot, he elevated 200 of his disciples to a Siddhayogi, Siddhas. Eg, Sai baba, Shankar maharaj, Gajanan maharaj etc.

In Maharashtra, lot of people worship Dattatreya and then their avatar Shri Swami Smartha and this follower count is not even small, its a lot.
Bhagwan dattatreya is the complete form of trideva that is bhagwan vishnu, Mahesh (shiva), Brahma. Four dogs of dattatreya symbolise four vedas and a cow symbolises the Earth.
Bhagwan dattatreya always with his devotees in every situation & even whena a normal person called him whole heartedly he immediately there for help that person(who doesn't even worship bhagwan dattatreya ) that's why dattatreya called samtrugami (the one who help immediately after just by remembering)
For doing Bhakti of dattatreya requires punya sanchay and bhagwan dattatreya's will

The lullaby you mentioned “Jay Yogeshwar datt Dayal tu j ek jag ma pratipal” is known as Datt Bavani as it has 52 verses in it and it was originally written in Gujarati language by the same guru of your nana Shri Rang Avdhoot Maharaj! His aashram is near Bharuch (Gujarat) on the bank of Narmada river. That place is called Nareshwar! You must visit this place, very positive energy is there and very peaceful.

I don't know what to say, really half baked info is bad. There has been lineages from avadhoota dattatreya avatar from the period of ramayan & mahabharat. Krishna refers to teachings from dattatreya. Quite a lot. A gita (not the one said on battle field, krishna gave 6 gita upadeshas) full of teachings from datta is in Mahabharata. Currently sri sachidananda ganapathy datta swamy, in mysore is a living avadhoota dattatreya avatar. Dattatreya has his shishya all over india, mostly the southern & western parts of india.

I would like to add some info which i have been taught or learnt since childhood in our Maharashtrian Family.
In Maharashtra, God Dattatreya's main temple is at Gaangapur.
Shree Swami Samartha(Akkalkot) , Shree Sai Baba(shirdi),
Shree Gajanan Maharaj(shegaav) are also his 'roop' or incarnations.
Its said you worship i god and you get blessings of all the three.
SHREE SWAMI SAMARTHA from AKKALKOT is my GURU.
I go to his temple in GIRGAON SOUTH MUMBAI which i feel equivalent powerful as Akkalkot.
His SLOGAN BELOW already gives you that strength to go ahead in life without any worries.

Gangapur is in Karnataka.... After visiting Akkalkot which is in Maharashtra and only an hour away from Gangapur people visit there....
But Main temple of Dattatray in Maharashtra is in Mahur, Nanded Datta tekdi (besides Renuka mata and Parshuram Mandir) where Datta guru was born.... After that Karanja in Washim district where Narasinha Saraswati was born.. and then Narsinhawadi in Kolhapur....

Jai yogeshwar Datta Dayal. Is line from Datt Bavani. Datta bavani is written by Shri Rang Avdhootji. "SHRI GURU CHARITRA" is great script written on Lord Dattatreya incarnations and history which also contain the Great "Shri Guru Gita" in Aadhyay 49 of the book. And as the book was initially encrypted in devnagari script so respected shri Avdhootji created "Datta Bavani" which is crux of whole Shri Guru Charitra
Dattaguru or dattatreya is son of Atri Rushi and Mata Ansuya. There is a meaning for all these three words. Atri means not of the three, that is Tamas, Rajas or Sattva affect him. Ansuya means a lady who never has jealousy. And their son who is Datta means given, given by tridevas as blessings. So dattatreya has qualities of tridevas. I differe with the guest when he compares Dattatreya with Trishiro Bhairava just because of their resembalance. Daataguru has done much work for sanatan dharma, by establishing shri datta sampradaya and nath sampradaya. His work on elevating and supporting sanatan dharma through debates and shastras is incomparable. He initiated agnihotra in domestic practices and a lot more to add. But mind it can not be an incarnation of bhairava.
As you said,when u were kids,at night your mom Sing a song "Jay Yogishwar Datta Dayal ...." Called As "Datta Bavani" in that 52 shlok.. Written By Rangavadhut Swami who ur Nana Ji's Guru..

There are many who can give detailed knowledge on Lord Dattatreya Leela, incarnations, nath sampraday, Datta famous places and its importance. EVEN Guru Gita which Lord shiva narrated to Devi Parvati is very powerful script.
And it is worth mentioning that Guru Dattatreya is the Guru of Parshuram. 🙏
