Everybody has his own opinion, but to me Ezzard Charles is the greatest boxer of all time. He never ducked anyone and has one of the best resumes ever. He defeated such greats as Archie Moore (3 times), Charley Burley (2 times), Jersey Joe Walcott (2 times), Elmer Ray, Lloyd Marshal, Joey Maxim, Joe Louis, Jimmi Bivins. Some of them were from "black murderers row" and were ducked by Sugar Ray Robinson himself. But Ezzard fought everybody and during his prime avanged all his losses except the one against Tunero cause they only fought once. He was beyond great, he is the embodiment of True Champion.

My favourite boxer ever, started as a pro as a middleweight, went 15 rounds with Rocky and beat Joe Louis granted a past his best Louis but still an accomplishment. See a lot of the things Toney does in Charles' defence.

    • @SuperMurray2009

Sugar Ray Robinson didn't duck Charlie Burley. Charley Burlie would win then he'd lose and he'd win and he'd lose. He needed to stay consistent.

James Toney names Charles as one of his greatest influences and you can see it in all of JT's fights, especially on the defensive side. Toney didn't move his feet as much as Charles, especially when he got big but otherwise, the resemblance is uncanny.

Ezzard Charles is the greatest ever Light-Heavyweight who never got a title shot. He beat all of the best men at the weight for years and in the end had to move up and fight bigger Heavyweights to get a shot. That he became World Heavyweight Champion and made many defenses and as he faded still inflicted the worst punishment Rocky Marciano ever suffered is a true tribute to his greatness. Just wish he'd also been LH champ. What a reign that would have been!

Boxrec has him P4P number 1 in all weight classes with 1764 points. That is 620 points more than Archie Moore and 658 more than Ray Robinson.
I believe this is because he fought and beat more all time greats than anyone else, since those other two had many more fights than Charles...both almost double the number of fights.
