With all due respect to Lucy B, Carol B & Gilda R, Gracie was the best of all time. I've always thought it was Lucy's high production value that kept her a step ahead of Gracie... but it really doesn't matter, they were all amazing
I once saw the Burns and Allen on UK TV many, many years ago. It was not on the tv that much. The shows were funny then and even more so nowadays. I shall try and catch up but it may take a few years.
George said that once he appeared with Gracie all he had to do was be the straight man because Gracie was so funny. We saw him in Atlantic City when he was well into his 90's and seemed still to miss Gracie.
This is from one of George & Gracie's earliest TV shows, originally telecast live in the fall of 1950. They were appearing every other Thursday night, before a live audience at the Mansfield Theater in New York (they were back on the West Coast by January 1951). Hal March is "Harry Morton", the first of FOUR actors to fill the role....
What I like about Gracie is that she never acted, she just did what the script told her to do. When the script called for her to eat a sandwich, she ate a sandwich. When the script called for her to write down an address. She wrote the address.
George said later that she was a method actress before it was ever a concept. She was such a trailblazer on many levels, from bringing ladylike style to the "Dumb Dora" persona to some specific bits, like the "Successful Marriage Manual" storyline of being all things to your husband (pal, siren, mother, helpless). Some folks seem to make a big deal about Lucy Ricardo doing it on television in 1951 (based off of a radio episode she did in 1950); however, Gracie did an entire radio episode called "Successful Marriage Manual" in 1942. That's *eight years* before Lucy repeated the storyline on her radio show "My Favorite Husband" prior to the television version.
I never new anyone but Larry Keating played Harry Morton until I saw this clip then googled it: Larry Keating, actually, was not in the original cast, with his character of Harry Morton first being portrayed by Hal March (October-December 1950), then John Brown (January-June 1951), and after that, Fred Clark, until 1953.
Did you know that Gracie was originally supposed to be the straight woman? The married team is amazing! One of my favorites. The duo first teamed up in 1923 following the break up of George’s partnership with straight man Billy Lorraine. Burns later recalled… “ they laughed when she asked the questions and didn’t laugh when I gave the punchline, so I gave her all the jokes.”
People keep saying that, but I can't agree. Sure, Gracie AND George were quite a comedy couple, but George does a reasonable " single act " when he goes into his monologues. It's just that he is much better WITH Gracie than WITHOUT. After all, the guy made a few decent movies after Gracie passed.
I imagine George grieved for Gracie immensely. No other women could hold a candle to Gracie.
I watched them as a child, bought the DVD set as an adult, and watch their shows on TV as a retiree. Love Gracie's comedic talent.
Great writers and she sure could deliver.......love how she never breaks stride
Gracie was one of a kind. Not only funny but feminine, classy and talented.
It's so bad that we lost Gracie at an early age. I cant imagine George without Gracie
I've seen this clip so,so,so many times and Still Laugh like Hell, l Ms. Gracie is too much
I only got to start seeing their show a few years ago for the first time. Gracie of course was so funny, Poor George 😄
Gracie is the funniest woman ever.

I suspect they all took lessons watching Gracie.

Do you happen to know which episode exactly?

She wrote the script honey. She was the writer, dear.
He quoted what I said in his book. I loved them both. If you have not read any of his books I highly recommend them.
Gracie is pure comic genius!
What an amazing show
old george owed everything to gracie
themopar426 He acknowledged that fact in interviews from the late '70s onward. 😃
Bear in mind that George Burns wrote most of their material...but only Gracie could deliver the lines!
George would often say” I was struggling and then i discovered I had a great and wonderful talent. So I married her and became a big star”.
George was the greatest straight man.

Comedic genius! 💙
Paul Mooney brought me here by saying Betty White stole Grscie Allen's act. This lady is very funny and talented. Glad i watched this video.
